Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day often occur on the same date—the second Monday in October—but they are different observances with different histories and legal status. Columbus Day is a U.S. federal holiday. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is recognized by some states, cities and other jurisdictions, but it is not on the federal holiday list. A state or city may observe one, both, an alternative holiday or neither as a paid public holiday.
The difference at a glance
| Question | Indigenous Peoples’ Day | Columbus Day |
|---|---|---|
| Primary emphasis | Indigenous peoples, their histories, cultures, resilience and continuing presence | Christopher Columbus; the day has also carried significance for Italian American heritage |
| Federal status | Not listed as a federal holiday | Listed as a U.S. federal holiday |
| Typical date | Often the second Monday in October where adopted | The second Monday in October |
| State and local practice | Some jurisdictions observe it alone, alongside Columbus Day or through another arrangement | Some jurisdictions retain it, pair it with Indigenous Peoples’ Day or replace it |
| Meaning for every resident | Views differ among Indigenous people and other residents | Views differ among Italian Americans, Indigenous people and other residents |
The overlap on the calendar does not make the observances interchangeable. One centers living Indigenous nations and communities; the other centers Columbus and a tradition that, in some places, is also connected with Italian American identity.
Are Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day on the same day?
They often are. Columbus Day is observed federally on the second Monday in October. Many governments that recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day use that same Monday, so both names can appear on calendars for one date. In 2026, the second Monday is October 12.

For a closure, payroll or deadline, check the calendar of the specific government, school system, bank or employer. A federal holiday designation does not automatically require a private business or a state agency to close, and a city proclamation does not change the federal holiday list.
What Indigenous Peoples’ Day emphasizes
Recognition of living peoples and cultures
Indigenous Peoples’ Day honors Indigenous peoples as living communities rather than treating them only as a subject of the past. Its emphasis commonly includes Indigenous histories, cultures, contributions, resilience and continuing presence. It can also draw attention to challenges that Indigenous communities continue to face.
The name “peoples” reflects the existence of many distinct Indigenous nations and communities, each with its own history and culture. The observance should not be treated as a generic theme for costumes, regalia or culturally specific objects. A respectful event uses accurate information and, where possible, guidance from the Indigenous community or nation being discussed.
More than a renaming exercise
Indigenous observance efforts predate recent changes to October calendars. The Bureau of Indian Affairs describes advocacy reaching back to the early twentieth century. In 1915, Arapaho minister Sherman Coolidge issued a proclamation calling for an American Indian Day. Earlier and later efforts included advocacy by Arthur Caswell Parker, petitioning by Red Fox James and state-level observances.

That history matters because Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not simply a modern replacement label created in response to one holiday. It grew from efforts to recognize Native peoples, their survival and their contributions.
What Columbus Day emphasizes
Columbus and Italian American heritage
Columbus Day centers Christopher Columbus and the 1492 voyage traditionally credited in U.S. history with connecting Europe and the Americas. The observance has also held significance for Italian American heritage, particularly as a public recognition of Italian ancestry and contributions.
Acknowledging harm and contested history
The holiday’s meaning is contested because European exploration and colonization brought profound violence, dispossession and disease to Indigenous peoples. Public officials can honor Italian American heritage while also acknowledging the wrongs inflicted on Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities. Recognizing those historical harms does not require assuming that every Italian American, Indigenous person or other resident shares one view of the holiday.
In practice, a Columbus Day proclamation may combine commemoration with an acknowledgment of atrocities and a commitment to confront that history honestly. An Indigenous Peoples’ Day proclamation may focus instead on Indigenous nations, cultures and contemporary life.

Why the two observances came to overlap
The 1992 quincentennial
The 500th anniversary of Columbus’s arrival in the Western Hemisphere in 1992 brought national and local celebrations. Many Native people could not fully embrace those celebrations. The Bureau of Indian Affairs records responses that included public protest, public education, commemorations and celebrations of Native survival and contributions.
Those responses helped make the difference between the observances more visible: one commemorates Columbus and related heritage, while the other recognizes Indigenous peoples and their continuing presence. Governments that changed their October designation were responding to that history in different ways; there was no single nationwide renaming process.
Different jurisdictions made different choices
Because state and local governments control many of their own calendars, the result is a patchwork. Two neighboring jurisdictions can use different names for the same Monday. A government can list both names, use Indigenous Peoples’ Day alone, retain Columbus Day or create another arrangement.
Federal status versus state and local recognition
What the federal list says
USAGov’s federal-holiday list, updated July 13, 2026, contains 12 federal holidays and includes Columbus Day on the second Monday in October. Indigenous Peoples’ Day is not included on that list.

Federal status describes the federal government’s holiday calendar. It does not dictate how every state, city, school or private employer must label or observe the date.
What the state-level picture shows
Pew Research Center reported on October 7, 2025, that 17 states and the District of Columbia had October second-Monday holidays honoring Native Americans. Pew divided those arrangements into holidays observed alongside Columbus Day, holidays observed on their own and unpaid observances.
That figure is a dated description, not a permanent 2026 count. Pew noted that it assumed California and American Samoa would continue routine proclamations even though neither had issued one by the publication date. State laws, executive proclamations and payroll rules can change, so a current official calendar is the right source for a particular jurisdiction.
What “recognized” can mean
Recognition is not one uniform legal category. It may mean a state holiday, an unpaid observance, a proclamation, a school-calendar designation or a local government holiday. A name on a calendar does not by itself establish paid leave for every worker or closure of every service.

What changed—or did not change—in 2026
On September 24, 2026, S. Res. 900 was introduced in the Senate and referred to the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs. The resolution supports designating the second Monday in October 2026 as Indigenous Peoples’ Day and supports federal holiday designation.
A resolution expressing support is not an enacted federal holiday. The referral means the proposal entered the committee process; it did not add Indigenous Peoples’ Day to the federal holiday list. Unless Congress enacts a change, Columbus Day remains the federal holiday on that October Monday.
When reporting on the resolution, use the precise status: it was introduced and referred to committee. Do not describe it as a law, an approved federal holiday or proof that the federal calendar changed.

- Identify the authority that controls your question. For a federal office, start with the federal holiday calendar. For a state employee, use the state personnel or administrative calendar. For a school closure, use the district’s published calendar.
- Check the date and the name together. A listing for the second Monday in October may say Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples’ Day, both names or another designation.
- Look for the legal effect. Determine whether the entry is a paid holiday, an unpaid observance, a proclamation or simply an educational designation.
- Confirm the year. Holiday laws and proclamations can change, and a historical list may not describe the current calendar.
- Use the employer or service provider’s own notice for practical decisions. Banks, courts, delivery services, schools and private businesses can publish schedules that differ from a government holiday list.
How to discuss the observances accurately
- Say that the dates often overlap, not that the holidays are the same.
- Distinguish federal recognition from state or local recognition.
- Describe Indigenous Peoples’ Day as recognition of living Indigenous peoples and cultures, not only as opposition to Columbus.
- Explain that Columbus Day can carry Italian American significance while also being debated because of colonial violence and its consequences.
- Avoid claiming that all Indigenous people, Italian Americans or residents support one position.
- Date any state count or legislative development so readers know how current it is.
For classroom or public programming, place Indigenous voices and reliable historical context at the center. Avoid treating regalia, sacred items or culturally specific designs as generic holiday accessories.
Bottom line
Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day usually share the second Monday in October, but they answer different historical and civic purposes. Columbus Day is on the federal holiday list; Indigenous Peoples’ Day is a state and local observance in many places but is not a federal holiday. The only dependable answer for a closure or paid day off is the current calendar of the particular jurisdiction or organization.
