An indie game is ready to ship when one named release candidate passes functional, compatibility, performance, accessibility, content, online-service, and platform checks—and every remaining defect has an explicit risk decision. Freeze the build first, test the exact package players will download, record reproducible evidence, and do a clean-install smoke test on the final uploaded artifact.

This checklist gives a practical release process for a small team, including device coverage, beta testing, bug severity, store submission, and the conditions for a defensible ship decision.

1. Freeze and identify the release candidate

Do not run a “final” test against a moving target. Create one release candidate (RC) identified by a version number, changelist, or source-control hash. If the binary changes, the candidate changes and affected checks must be rerun.

Record for every test run What to capture
Build identity Version, changelist or hash, package name, and whether it is a development, staging, or release build
Scope Target platforms, supported operating systems, regions, languages, online services, and features included
Environment Device or hardware model, OS version, CPU/GPU tier, RAM, display mode, input devices, audio device, network type, and free storage
Execution Tester, date, test charter or case IDs, pass/blocked/untested result, logs, screenshots or video, and linked bug IDs
Change impact What changed since the previous candidate and which regression suites must be repeated

Keep functional checks separate from store, age-rating, privacy, and platform-certification checks. A feature can work correctly while the submission still fails because of metadata, permissions, content declarations, or packaging.

2. Functional and regression testing

Install, update, and recovery paths

  1. Install the game from the same package distribution will use. Verify first launch, required redistributables, permissions, and creation of the expected save or configuration folders.
  2. Perform a clean uninstall, confirm what data is removed or retained by design, then reinstall and launch again.
  3. Apply an update from the previous public or beta build. Check that settings, saves, entitlements, and downloaded assets survive.
  4. Where the platform supports it, test rollback or recovery after an interrupted, failed, or partial update. Document the player-visible message and the recovery action.

Start-to-finish core loop

Use a new profile and play through onboarding, the first meaningful challenge, representative mid-game content, and the late-game or end-state sequence. Do not rely on a debug save that bypasses progression. Verify every progression gate, unlock, quest or objective state, checkpoint, fail state, win state, pause path, and restart path.

  • Trigger objectives in different orders when the design permits it.
  • Leave and re-enter areas before completing an objective.
  • Quit during transitions, dialogue, combat, cutscenes, and reward screens.
  • Confirm that a failed attempt can be retried without duplicated rewards or an unwinnable state.

Saving, profiles, and migration

Test manual saves, autosaves, checkpoints, cloud saves where offered, and recovery from a missing or corrupted save. Create multiple profiles and switch between them. Load a save created by the prior release candidate or an older supported build, then verify migration of progress, inventory, settings, and unlocked content. Interrupt the game during saving and loading to check that the next launch gives a safe recovery option rather than silently overwriting progress.

Menus, settings, and economy

Open every menu and exercise every setting, rebinding option, tutorial prompt, inventory action, purchase or reward flow, and confirmation/cancel path. Test extreme values such as the smallest supported text size, muted audio, maximum sensitivity, and disabled hints. Confirm that a canceled transaction changes nothing and that a repeated input cannot grant duplicate currency, items, or achievements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regression after each meaningful change

Run targeted regression for every fixed high-severity defect and every system touched since the previous build. A change to input handling, save code, rendering, networking, localization, or platform integration should trigger tests beyond the exact bug reproduction because shared systems often fail in adjacent states.

3. Build a real-device compatibility matrix

List what you support before choosing what to test. Apple advises testing on each device platform where an app could be used, not only in simulated environments. For every supported platform, include at least one device at the minimum specification and one representative high-end device.

Dimension Minimum coverage to plan Examples of failures to look for
Operating system Oldest supported version, current version, and any required update path API incompatibility, permission prompts, suspend/resume failure
CPU, GPU, and RAM Minimum supported tier plus a representative high-end tier Frame-time spikes, out-of-memory termination, shader or driver faults
Display Windowed and fullscreen, supported resolutions, aspect ratios, ultrawide where applicable Cut-off UI, incorrect safe areas, stretching, unreadable text
Input Keyboard/mouse, each supported controller type, touch, and handheld controls where applicable Wrong prompts, lost focus, duplicate input, unavailable bindings
Audio Built-in speakers, headphones, Bluetooth or USB devices where supported Missing channels, device-switch silence, incorrect volume routing
Storage Normal free space and a nearly-full but realistic device Failed patch, truncated save, unclear recovery message
Network Offline, normal broadband or Wi-Fi, mobile data where relevant, high latency and packet loss Timeout loops, stuck matchmaking, unsaved progress, misleading status

Include rotation, backgrounding, and handheld modes when relevant. Test changing display mode, disconnecting and reconnecting a controller, and removing or restoring network connectivity while loading or saving.

Android pre-launch testing

Google Play Pre-launch Reports exercise a range of devices and can surface stability, performance, accessibility, compatibility, and security or privacy issues. To become eligible, publish the game to a default closed or open testing track. Treat the report as additional coverage, not a replacement for your minimum and high-end physical devices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Measure performance, stability, and recovery

Define ship-blocking thresholds for your own genre, target hardware, and risk tolerance; platform sources do not provide one universal frame-rate floor, crash-free rate, or bug count for every game. Record measurements on the named RC so a later change can be compared with the same baseline.

Measure the player-visible metrics

  • Frame pacing and low frame rates, not only an average FPS number.
  • Initial launch, scene-transition, respawn, and save/load times.
  • Peak and sustained memory use, CPU and GPU utilization, and thermal or battery impact on mobile.
  • Network latency, reconnect time, timeout behavior, and bandwidth use for online features.
  • Crash frequency, hang frequency, error logs, and the percentage of sessions that recover after suspend/resume.

Stress the worst cases

Exercise scenes with many enemies, particles, physics objects, NPCs, streamed assets, simultaneous audio, large inventories, and complex saves. Run an extended session long enough to expose memory growth, timer drift, overheating, or degraded frame pacing. Suspend and resume repeatedly, fill storage to a realistic low-space condition, and capture crash logs with exact reproduction steps. A crash report without the build ID, device, preceding actions, and a reliable reproduction path is difficult to triage.

5. Accessibility and usability

Test accessibility options as working features, not as menu checkboxes. Only declare support that has been exercised on the target devices. On Apple product pages, developers can declare VoiceOver, Voice Control, Larger Text, and Captions support; those declarations create an Accessibility Nutrition Label.

  • Read text at every supported size and check contrast against backgrounds.
  • Ensure color is not the only way to communicate team, rarity, danger, or success.
  • Verify caption and subtitle timing, speaker identification, language selection, and audio controls.
  • Provide controls for screen shake and flashing effects where the game uses them.
  • Test remapping, hold versus toggle behavior, sensitivity, and simultaneous inputs.
  • Navigate menus with a controller, keyboard, or other supported input without requiring a mouse where relevant.
  • Check focus order, selected-state visibility, scroll behavior, and recovery after an input device is disconnected.
  • Confirm that difficulty or assist options apply consistently and do not block progression or achievements unexpectedly.

6. Localization and content integrity

Run the complete game in every supported language, including menus, tutorials, subtitles, voice-over selection, controller prompts, achievements, store text, legal notices, and error messages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Look for truncation, overlap, missing strings, fallback fonts, and incorrect line wrapping.
  • Test right-to-left layout where applicable, including mixed-language names and numbers.
  • Verify date, time, number, currency, plural, and decimal formatting for each region.
  • Inspect images that contain text; these often remain untranslated after UI strings are complete.
  • Check that spoken lines, subtitles, and on-screen objectives remain synchronized.
  • Maintain a content inventory so late dialogue, item names, screenshots, or legal edits cannot escape translation or rating review.

Age-rating and sensitive content

Answer rating questionnaires against the content actually shipped. Recheck violence, gambling-like mechanics, purchases, user interaction, online communication, and user-generated content after late design changes. The rating, store description, screenshots, and trailer must describe the same product.

7. Online, multiplayer, and service failure cases

Test the successful path and the failure path for every service. Cover account creation, wrong passwords, expired sessions, entitlement restoration, invites, matchmaking, host migration, reconnects, region and language settings, chat and moderation controls, maintenance notices, and version mismatch.

  1. Start offline, then connect; start online, then disconnect during authentication, matchmaking, loading, gameplay, and result submission.
  2. Repeat with high latency, packet loss, a changing network, a device clock change, and a full or unavailable server.
  3. Verify that retries are bounded and that the player can cancel, return to a safe menu, or continue offline when designed.
  4. Test a client on an older or newer supported version to confirm the version-mismatch message and update route.

Confirm analytics, crash reporting, privacy disclosures, and consent behavior in every supported region. Check that telemetry failure does not block play or expose personal data in logs.

8. Store, certification, and release operations

Run platform requirements as a separate pass using the current rules for each target. Validate the actual upload, not only a local development build.

Package and platform checks

  • Confirm depots or packages, launch options, executable permissions, redistributables, architecture, and required entitlements.
  • Verify achievements, cloud saves, controller configuration, pricing, regional availability, age rating, and parental or purchase restrictions.
  • Review capsule art, screenshots, trailer, description, support URL, privacy policy, contact information, and every language version.
  • Use the store’s validation tools, resolve errors and warnings that affect players, then install from the uploaded artifact and perform a smoke test.

Steamworks release action

Steamworks provides a Game Build checklist and a release action. That action publishes the store package, marks the game playable and released, and applies the release timestamp. Confirm that the intended build and depots are selected before executing it; publishing the wrong package is an operational release failure even if the game itself is stable.

Apple distribution scope

Apple’s submission guidance states that App Store distribution reaches 175 storefronts and 50 languages. It also requires privacy details for the app and integrated third-party partners. Apple reviews apps and updates for safety, security, reliability, metadata, and in-app purchases, so a technically functional build can still be rejected for incomplete declarations or inconsistent metadata.

9. A beta strategy that produces usable evidence

Stage the audience

  1. Internal smoke pass: verify installation, launch, the opening sequence, input, saving, quitting, and recovery on every target platform.
  2. Focused external sessions: invite players who match the intended audience and deliberately cover the hardware and accessibility mix you cannot reproduce internally.
  3. Release-candidate confirmation: after fixing beta defects, issue a new named RC and repeat the impacted suites plus a clean-install smoke test.

Give each session a short charter covering the core loop, onboarding, accessibility, performance, and failure recovery. Unstructured requests for “general feedback” tend to produce opinions while missing reproducible defects.

TestFlight capacity

Apple’s current TestFlight guidance allows up to 100 internal testers and up to 10,000 external testers. These are invitation limits, not a requirement to recruit that many people. Choose a cohort size that lets the team read, reproduce, fix, and retest reports before the next candidate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Require a complete bug report

  • Build number or RC identifier
  • Device model and OS version
  • Exact reproduction steps and frequency
  • Expected result versus actual result
  • Save or account state, network condition, and language
  • Screenshot, video, log, or crash report when available
  • Severity and whether a workaround exists

10. Triage defects and make the ship decision

Severity Release meaning Typical examples
Blocker Prevents launch or corrupts progress; do not ship Game cannot start, unavoidable progression dead end, unrecoverable save corruption
Critical Severe player harm, core-loop failure, security risk, or likely store rejection Frequent crash in normal play, broken purchase entitlement, exploitable account or data flaw
Major Substantial feature, device, accessibility, or multiplayer failure Supported device cannot complete a central mode; reconnect loses a match result
Minor Localized or cosmetic issue with limited impact Clipped text in one menu, non-blocking visual defect
Polish Quality improvement that does not materially impede play Timing, animation, or wording refinement

For every accepted known issue, record affected platforms, player impact, workaround, owner, and follow-up plan. The release owner should ship only when blockers and critical issues are closed or explicitly waived, required platform checks pass, and the final candidate completes a clean smoke test from the uploaded package.

11. When outside QA is justified

Bring in an independent game-QA provider when the team cannot credibly cover its supported device matrix, long-session performance, multiplayer edge cases, accessibility, monetisation, or certification requirements. A vendor may cover gameplay, performance, compatibility, multiplayer, monetisation, and platform-policy testing, including App Store and Google Play checks.

Before engagement, define the exact platforms, builds, languages, test depth, confidentiality terms, turnaround, reporting format, retest policy, and current partner terms. Outside testers increase coverage; they do not replace a named RC, internal ownership of risk, or the final package smoke test.

12. Final release-candidate gate

At the release meeting, review one record for the named RC rather than a collection of “mostly current” results. The candidate is ready only when:
