A Censuus Indie App Landscape snapshot dated September 24, 2026, suggests a gap between the categories indie makers populate and the categories whose leading apps attracted attention. In its dataset of 262 independent apps, the most-visited app named for Food & Drink was Fridgea, while STATOK led the named Finance examples. The measure was first-party visits to app pages—not downloads—and the snapshot is not a lasting category ranking.
What the September 2026 snapshot shows
The article describing Censuus’s live Indie App Landscape identifies the most-visited app in each of its top five categories at the September 24, 2026 snapshot: Malyatko in Health & Fitness, Fridgea in Food & Drink, STATOK in Finance, Flipo in Education, and Wishbox in Lifestyle. It says the dataset covers 262 independent apps. The accessible figures do not include exact visit totals, so the examples establish which apps were named—not how large the gaps between them were.
The stated measure is first-party visits to app pages. That makes this a comparison of attention to listings at a particular point in time. It is not a count of downloads, paying customers, revenue, or category-wide demand. The source says the report recomputes live, so its ordering can change; treat the date as part of the result, not a footnote.
Does this mean makers should build in Food & Drink or Finance?
No single snapshot of page visits can answer that. The result may be useful as a prompt to investigate those categories, but it does not show that Food & Drink or Finance apps are more profitable, convert more visitors, retain users better, or face less competition. Nor does it establish that category choice caused the attention: the reported comparison names leading apps, and the accessible excerpt does not give category totals or the full methodology.
#1 Best Overall
For a maker evaluating an idea, separate the questions the snapshot cannot combine:
- Supply: How many relevant apps are in the dataset, and how were they selected and categorized?
- Attention: How many first-party page visits did each category or app receive over the same period?
- Outcomes: What proportion of visitors download, return, or pay?
- Opportunity: Is there a user need that existing products fail to meet?
The available figures address only a limited slice of attention. They do not settle the other questions, so use them to generate hypotheses rather than choose a market on their behalf.

Why app-directory counts are not traffic evidence
A separate directory can help illustrate how category inventories differ, but its counts cannot verify Censuus’s traffic comparison. Get Indie Apps displayed 372 apps across 25 categories on the page accessed October 7, 2026, including 23 Productivity listings, 11 Food & Drink listings, and 16 Finance listings. Those are that directory’s catalog counts—not the number of apps in the Censuus dataset and not visit totals. The difference in sources and measures means the counts should not be treated as a direct supply-versus-attention calculation.
Indie Hackers also offers a maker-product directory with category filters, including Productivity, Finance, and Food & Drink. Its directory listing provides category browsing, not visit data.

How to use the comparison responsibly
- Keep the date attached: Describe the result as the September 24, 2026 Censuus snapshot, not a permanent ranking.
- Name the metric: Say “first-party app-page visits,” not downloads or popularity in general.
- Distinguish leaders from categories: Fridgea and STATOK are the named leading examples for Food & Drink and Finance; the excerpt does not show category-level totals or the size of their lead.
- Check the underlying report before using exact rankings: The article excerpt does not expose the complete category breakdown or methodology. For decisions requiring precise totals or inclusion rules, consult the live Censuus report and note when you accessed it.
- Validate the business case separately: Research the specific audience, alternatives, acquisition channels, conversion, retention, and willingness to pay for the product you plan to build.
