Indian equities opened lower on Friday, October 16, 2026, as traders locked in gains after Thursday’s unusually strong rally. The BSE Sensex slipped 113 points to 74,187 and the NSE Nifty fell 27.20 points to 22,967.15 in early trade. Selling by foreign institutions and a pullback in Reliance Industries outweighed gains in information-technology shares, led by Tech Mahindra.

What happened in early trading

The opening decline followed a powerful advance in the previous session. On Thursday, the Sensex jumped 1,533.72 points, or 2.11%, to 74,315.61, while the Nifty gained 374.65 points, or 1.66%, to 22,997.35. After a one-day move of that size, some investors sold part of their positions to secure profits.

Why profit-taking pushed prices down

Investors locked in gains

Profit-taking is the sale of shares after prices rise, allowing an investor to turn an unrealized gain into cash. It does not automatically mean that investors believe the longer-term outlook has deteriorated. In this case, the selling came immediately after Thursday’s sharp rebound, so the lower opening is best understood as a short-term reaction rather than proof of a durable trend reversal.

Foreign fund selling added pressure

Foreign Institutional Investors sold equities worth Rs 5,285.37 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data cited by PTI. Large overseas flows can influence index-heavy shares, especially when domestic traders are also reducing positions after a rally.

Reliance gave back some of its rally

Reliance Industries was among the main drags after gaining 4% in the prior session. A pullback in a company with substantial index weight can move the Sensex and Nifty even when many other shares are stable or rising.

IT shares limited the decline

Information-technology stocks provided a counterweight to the broader selling. Tech Mahindra rose 5% after reporting a 32.74% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 1,585.6 crore for the July–September FY27 quarter. Infosys and Tata Consultancy Services also advanced. Bharti Airtel and Titan were among the other gainers noted in early trade.

The gains did not eliminate the index decline because several large non-IT constituents fell. Reliance Industries, Bajaj Finserv, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro, Asian Paints and State Bank of India were among the biggest Sensex laggards.

Global and commodity signals

Overseas markets were generally firmer

South Korea’s Kospi, Japan’s Nikkei 225, Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng were higher during the Asian session. U.S. markets had also finished higher in the preceding session. The Associated Press described that rebound with the sentence, “U.S. stock indexes muscled higher following a shaky day of trading.”

U.S. index October 15 move Close
S&P 500 Up 0.3% 7,744.06
Dow Jones Industrial Average Up 1.1% 52,177.69
Nasdaq Composite Up 0.1% 26,713.03

The recovery came after early concerns about the artificial-intelligence boom pressured markets across Asia, while stronger U.S. corporate profit reports helped stocks recover. The session before that had been weaker: on October 14, the S&P 500 fell 1.1%, the Dow declined 0.1% and the Nasdaq dropped 1.9% as hotter inflation increased expectations of Federal Reserve rate hikes and weighed on AI-related shares.

Oil edged lower

Brent crude traded 0.61% lower at USD 105.3 per barrel. Oil prices matter to Indian markets because energy costs affect inflation, company margins and the country’s import bill, but a single early-session move in crude does not determine the direction of the Sensex or Nifty.

How to interpret the move

  • It is an opening move: the available figures describe early trade, so they cannot establish where either index will close.
  • The immediate trigger was positioning: profit-taking followed Thursday’s large rally, with foreign selling and weakness in Reliance adding pressure.
  • Leadership was mixed: IT shares, particularly Tech Mahindra, gained on earnings, while several heavyweight sectors declined.
  • Global cues were not uniformly negative: major Asian benchmarks and U.S. indexes were higher, although recent inflation and AI-valuation concerns remained part of the backdrop.

What traders will watch next

  1. Whether the Sensex and Nifty recover from their opening losses or selling broadens through the session.
  2. Fresh foreign-institution flow data and whether domestic buying offsets overseas outflows.
  3. Follow-through in Tech Mahindra and other IT shares after the earnings-driven jump.
  4. Performance of index heavyweights such as Reliance Industries and the financial, consumer and industrial names that lagged at the open.
  5. Movements in Brent crude, Asian markets and U.S. interest-rate expectations, all of which can alter risk appetite.

Until a closing level is available, the most defensible reading is that Indian benchmarks were taking a breather after Thursday’s surge, not that a lasting market reversal had been confirmed.
