Indian shares reversed early gains on Monday, October 12, 2026: the Sensex closed down 547.65 points (0.76%) at 71,924.68, while the Nifty fell 157.10 points (0.70%) to 22,363.35. The same-day PTI report cited rising crude prices, continued foreign-investor selling and higher bond yields as pressures on sentiment; those factors are reported explanations, not a measured breakdown of what caused the decline.

How the Sensex and Nifty finished

The selloff was sharper at its lowest point than the final closing loss suggests. The Sensex fell as much as 796.23 points during the session, touching 71,676.10, before recovering some ground into the close. The indices’ closing figures and intraday low below are from The Sen Times’ October 12 report carrying PTI.

Index or measure October 12, 2026 result
BSE Sensex close 71,924.68, down 547.65 points (0.76%)
Sensex intraday low 71,676.10, after a decline of as much as 796.23 points
NSE Nifty close 22,363.35, down 157.10 points (0.70%)

What market reports pointed to

Crude oil rose

The PTI report said Brent crude was up 1.14% at USD 105.8 per barrel. Higher oil prices can matter for India because the country imports substantial crude: India Today described the broader channel as a larger import bill, potential pressure on the trade deficit and added inflation risk. That is economic context, not an estimate of the effect on this particular session.

Bond yields and foreign selling weighed on sentiment

PTI quoted Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Investments Limited, saying: “Indian markets failed to hold on to early gains as sentiment weakened amid a rise in the 10-year bond yield to a three-year high and continued FII outflows driven by external uncertainties,” The comment is an attributed market view, not an official exchange explanation of the decline.

The report also cited exchange data showing foreign institutional investors sold ₹3,568.90 crore of equities on Friday. That is a one-day flow figure for Friday, not an October-to-date total.

October foreign-investor flows: a different time window

News On AIR, citing depository data, reported that FPIs had offloaded ₹44,166 crore of Indian equities in October to date as of October 11. Its breakdown distinguishes exchange activity from primary-market activity:

October-to-date component, as of October 11 Reported amount
Exchange-sale outflows ₹45,126 crore
Primary-market inflows ₹960 crore
Net equity outflows reported ₹44,166 crore

These figures should not be conflated with the ₹3,568.90 crore Friday sale figure: they cover different periods and the October-to-date total combines exchange outflows with primary-market inflows. NSE cautions that its FII/FPI figures are provisional and can change after custodial confirmation; it points readers to NSDL or CDSL for final FPI data. SEBI’s FPI page lists the depositories’ daily and monthly series, so a definitive flow figure should be stated with its source, date and scope.
