To validate an Indian PIN code in Python, first check that the complete input is a six-character string with a nonzero first digit and five more digits. That confirms the format only—not that India Post has assigned the code to an office or that the office provides a particular service. For those checks, use India Post’s current locator or directory.
Validate the six-digit format in Python
Keep a PIN code as text: it is a postal identifier, not a number to calculate with. A string check also avoids converting the input and changing the representation being validated.
import re
def has_indian_pincode_format(value: object) -> bool:
# Checks shape only; it does not confirm an assigned post office.
return isinstance(value, str) and re.fullmatch(r"[1-9][0-9]{5}", value) is not None
The Government of India describes a PIN as a six-digit code used for post-office numbering. The pattern’s [1-9] requires a first digit from 1 through 9; [0-9]{5} requires five more ASCII digits. re.fullmatch() requires the entire string to match, so extra characters are rejected. The 2013 government release establishes the six-digit structure; the pattern is a practical format check, not a complete official validity test.

As written, the function rejects leading or trailing spaces. If your input contract allows surrounding whitespace, strip it explicitly before checking:
#1 Best Overall
value = value.strip()
is_valid_format = has_indian_pincode_format(value)
That is a product decision: it accepts a normalized value rather than the exact original input. Do not silently remove punctuation or accept separators unless your application explicitly permits them.
Know what kind of validity you need
“Valid” can mean three different things. A local pattern check is quick, but it cannot establish directory membership or delivery availability.
Rank #2
| Check | What it establishes | How to do it |
|---|---|---|
| Input format | The complete string follows the six-digit format. | Use the Python function above. |
| Directory membership | The PIN appears in an India Post post-office listing. | Look it up with the official locator or directory. |
| Serviceability | The relevant office record supports the service your application needs. | Check the current office and service details; a format match or listing alone is not a delivery guarantee. |
Verify an assigned post office
For a one-off lookup, use India Post’s PIN Code locator. For an application that checks many values, use the Department of Posts’ Pincode Directory catalog or its relevant official data interface. The catalog describes fields including office name, PIN, office type, delivery, district and state, and notes monthly updates. Record when you obtained a data snapshot and decide how your application will handle subsequent updates.
Directory membership is stronger evidence than a regex match, but it is not necessarily proof that an office offers the specific delivery or other service a user needs. Base that decision on the current official office and service record.
Understand what a PIN identifies
India Post describes the first digit as indicating a region; the first two digits together identify a sub-region or postal circle; the first three indicate a sorting or revenue district; and the last three identify the delivery post office. These digits support postal routing, but a PIN is not a precise street address.
A 2025 Department of Posts paper estimates the average area covered by a Pincode at around 170 square kilometres, with coverage ranging from a few square kilometres to thousands. That variation is why an application should not treat a PIN as a unique point location. India Post

DIGIPIN is a distinct system, not another six-digit PIN format. The Department of Posts’ technical document describes it as a 10-symbol alphanumeric grid code. A six-digit PIN validator will reject DIGIPINs, and should not be used to validate them. See the Department’s DIGIPIN information.
