Indian stocks rebounded on Tuesday, October 13, 2026: the BSE Sensex rose 1,109.10 points, or 1.54%, to 73,033.78, while the NSE Nifty gained 358.60 points, or 1.60%, to 22,721.95. The session’s strongest named large-cap gains were concentrated in IT shares, with HCL Tech and TCS among the leaders; HDFC Bank also advanced. The moves followed a decline on Monday.

How the Sensex and Nifty finished

The Sensex’s close was described by The Sen Times, in a report attributed to PTI, as its best single-day gain in four months. It reached an intraday high of 73,045.67, up 1,120.99 points, before giving back a small part of that rise. The Nifty’s 358.60-point advance was described as its best single-day rebound in more than two months; its reported high and close were both 22,721.95.

Which shares led the advance?

IT stocks posted the largest named gains among major large-cap movers. HCL Tech rose 8.28%, TCS gained 6.59%, Tech Mahindra advanced 4.90%, and Infosys added 4.44%. The report linked HCL Tech’s move in part to its quarterly results.

For July–September of FY27, HCL Tech reported consolidated net profit of Rs 5,132 crore, up 21.18%, according to the same PTI-attributed account. It said higher margins from advanced AI operations and lower tax outgo contributed to the increase. The account did not independently establish those explanations against a company filing.

HDFC Bank was among the financial shares named as a significant index mover. Other advancing names cited included HUL, Titan, Bajaj Finserv, SBI, M&M and ICICI Bank. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Eternal and Maruti were reported among the laggards.

What the report said supported sentiment

The market report attributed the rebound to several supportive factors rather than to one proven cause: stronger technology earnings, a steadier rupee, easing bond yields, gains in financial and FMCG shares, and comments by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on debate around long-term capital gains (LTCG) tax and the securities transaction tax (STT).

Geojit Investments Limited Head of Research Vinod Nair said stronger-than-expected technology earnings boosted confidence in corporate profit growth and lifted benchmark-heavy large-cap stocks. He also cited rupee stability and easing bond yields as support for sentiment and said financial stocks came into focus. This is an analyst’s explanation of the session, not evidence that any one factor caused the index rise.

The report said Sitharaman called debate on LTCG tax and STT considerable and healthy, and said she would be keenly “hearing them”. That account paraphrased her comments and quoted a fragment; it did not provide a separately verified speech transcript.

The rebound followed Monday’s losses

The previous session had ended lower. On Monday, the Sensex fell 547.65 points, or 0.76%, to 71,924.68, while the Nifty lost 157.10 points, or 0.70%, to 22,363.35. The Tuesday gains therefore followed a decline, but a one-session recovery does not by itself establish a change in the market’s longer-term direction.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold equities worth Rs 1,708.48 crore on Monday, according to exchange data cited in the report. That selling occurred alongside the previous session’s losses; it does not describe Tuesday’s flows.

Rupee, oil and overseas markets

The rupee was reported at 95.37, up about 41 paise on the day and marking its third consecutive session of gains. Brent crude was down 1.66% at USD 104.60 per barrel in the report’s snapshot.

Overseas markets offered a mixed backdrop. South Korea’s Kospi fell 5.46%, and Japan’s Nikkei 225 ended lower, while Shanghai’s SSE Composite and Hong Kong’s Hang Seng closed higher. European markets were trading higher when the report was filed; US markets had ended mostly lower on Monday. These are contemporaneous details from the October 13 report, not current quotes.

What the session does—and does not—show

The reported figures describe a sharp one-day rebound, led among the named large-cap gainers by IT shares, alongside advances in banking and other sectors. They do not establish that the rally will continue or offer a basis for choosing individual stocks. Index closes, share prices, exchange rates and investor flows can change from session to session.
