There is not enough comparable, current scheme-level evidence to rank India’s “top” growth-theme mutual funds responsibly. A fund’s name or mandate is not proof that it has performed well, will benefit from a growth trend, or suits your portfolio. What you can do is identify what a theme fund actually invests in, understand its concentration risk, and compare current official disclosures before deciding.
What a growth-theme mutual fund does
SEBI describes thematic and sectoral mutual funds as funds focused on specific sectors, industries, or themes. A thematic fund may hold companies from multiple industries linked by a common idea; a sectoral fund focuses on one sector. A manufacturing-and-infrastructure mandate, for example, can reach across businesses tied to production and infrastructure development rather than representing the entire Indian stock market.
A theme is an investment mandate, not a forecast. If the selected theme does well, its companies may benefit; if it disappoints, a concentrated portfolio can lag more diversified funds. SEBI warns that thematic and sectoral funds carry higher risk because their holdings are less diversified across industries. A compelling national growth story does not guarantee that the companies held by a fund will deliver shareholder returns.

Manufacturing and infrastructure
The SEBI-hosted scheme information document for Mahindra Manulife Build India Fund describes an open-ended equity scheme focused on manufacturing and infrastructure. Its stated objective is long-term capital appreciation, investing predominantly in equity and equity-related securities focused on companies and sectors that may benefit from those themes. The document discusses manufacturers and companies exposed to infrastructure development and capital spending.

This is an example of how a mandate can be expressed in scheme documents, not evidence that the fund is a top performer or appropriate for every investor. The document itself states, “There is no assurance that the investment objective of the Scheme will be achieved.”
Consumption
A SEBI-hosted draft scheme information document for LIC MF Consumption Fund describes an open-ended equity scheme following a consumption theme, with a long-term capital-appreciation objective and a benchmark reference to the Nifty India Consumption Total Return Index. Because the source is a draft, it does not establish final terms, current holdings, launch status, or present availability. Check for final, current official documents before treating it as an investable option.

How to compare a theme fund before investing
Use current official scheme documents and factsheets for every candidate, and compare like with like. A mandate tells you what a fund intends to do; its portfolio, costs, risks, and performance disclosures show how it is currently implemented.
- Theme and mandate: Check whether the objective actually covers the opportunity you want—such as manufacturing, infrastructure, consumption, healthcare, digitalisation, or energy transition—and note any constraints in the scheme documents.
- Holdings and concentration: Review current sector and issuer weights, top holdings, and overlap with funds you already own. A fund with a broad-sounding theme can still have substantial exposure to a small set of industries or companies.
- Risk: Read the scheme’s current Riskometer and, where applicable, the benchmark’s Riskometer. SEBI presents the Riskometer as a standardized indicator to help investors compare a scheme’s stated risk level with their own risk appetite. Risk labels and portfolio exposures can change, so an old label is not a substitute for current disclosures.
- Performance: Compare the same periods against an appropriate total-return benchmark, using consistent dates and, where possible, returns after costs. A favorable period alone does not establish that a fund is “top,” and past performance does not promise future results.
- Costs and access: Verify the current expense ratio, direct or regular plan, exit load, minimum investment, and liquidity terms in official documents. These details can differ by plan or change over time.
- Process and status: Check the current fund manager, portfolio turnover, assets, and whether the stated objective and scheme status remain current.
If the scheme documents leave you unsure about suitability, the Build India document advises: “Investors should consult their financial advisers if in doubt about whether the product is suitable for them.”

Why industry asset growth is not a fund return
AMFI, with Crisil Intelligence, reported an 11.1% monthly recovery in India’s mutual-fund industry assets in April 2026. That is an industry-level change in assets, not the return of a thematic category, an individual scheme, or an investor. It cannot show that a particular growth trend or fund performed similarly, and it is not a basis for ranking schemes.

The available scheme examples illustrate manufacturing/infrastructure and consumption mandates, but they do not provide a comparable current dataset across those themes and other growth areas. Without matching current information on holdings, risk, costs, and performance, ranking funds as the “top” choices would overstate what is established. Treat theme names as starting points for research, then make any decision using current disclosures and your own investment goals, time horizon, and tolerance for concentrated risk.
