A direct Nifty 50 index mutual fund is usually the easiest choice for a monthly SIP, fractional investing and anyone who does not want a demat account. A liquid Nifty 50 ETF can be more suitable when you already have a trading and demat account, can manage exchange orders and want intraday pricing or potentially lower fund expenses. Neither is automatically superior: compare total cost, tracking quality and execution conditions rather than the headline expense ratio alone.

The right answer depends on how you invest, how much you invest at a time and whether you are comfortable managing market orders, spreads and premiums or discounts to NAV.

The short answer

  • Choose a direct Nifty 50 index mutual fund when you make a monthly SIP, want automatic NAV-based investing, need fractional allocation or prefer not to open and maintain a demat account.
  • Choose a liquid Nifty 50 ETF when you already have a demat account, can use limit orders, invest larger lump sums and will check trading volume, bid-ask spread and the ETF price relative to NAV.
  • Compare both on realised tracking and all-in cost. An ETF’s lower quoted expense ratio can be offset by brokerage, spread, demat fees or buying above NAV. An index fund’s low expense ratio does not guarantee the smallest gap to the Nifty 50 either.

This comparison is for Indian investors using products that track the Nifty 50. Fund expenses, tracking data, spreads, tax rules and account charges change, so use dated factsheets and current tax guidance before investing.

What the Nifty 50 represents

The Nifty 50 is a diversified index of 50 large companies listed on the National Stock Exchange. It is owned and managed by NSE Indices Limited. NSE reported that the index represented about 53.73% of the free-float market capitalisation of stocks listed on NSE on 30 March 2026. That is a snapshot for that date, not a permanent percentage; market prices, constituent changes and index methodology can alter it.

When you buy an index fund or ETF, you are not buying the index directly. You buy units in a pooled vehicle that attempts to replicate the index’s portfolio and performance, after expenses and implementation effects. Both vehicles therefore carry the market risk of the Nifty 50: a fall in the index generally reduces the value of your units.

How the two vehicles work

Nifty 50 index mutual fund

An index mutual fund collects investor money and uses it to hold the Nifty 50 constituents, or a representative portfolio designed to mirror them. You purchase or redeem units with the fund house or an investment platform at the applicable NAV, normally calculated at the end of the trading day. You do not choose an intraday execution price.

Because the fund allocates money by NAV, it can issue fractional units. A monthly SIP can therefore invest the exact rupee amount you specify, subject to the fund and platform’s minimums. A demat account is not inherently required; a mutual-fund folio or platform account is sufficient.

Nifty 50 ETF

An ETF also holds a portfolio intended to track the Nifty 50, but its units trade on an exchange like shares. NSE describes ETFs as offering flexibility unavailable with traditional mutual funds because they trade during market hours. You submit an exchange order and receive the market price available when that order executes.

The ETF price can be above or below the portfolio’s NAV. A liquid ETF with active market makers will often trade close to NAV, but the gap can widen during volatile markets, at the open or close, or when trading volume is thin. You need a trading account and demat account, and exchange units are whole units rather than fractional pieces.

Index mutual fund versus ETF: side-by-side

Feature Nifty 50 index mutual fund Nifty 50 ETF
Dealing price Applicable NAV, normally calculated at the end of the day Exchange price during the trading session; may be above or below NAV
Account requirement Mutual-fund account or platform; demat is not inherently required Trading account and demat account required
SIP and unit size Automated SIPs are straightforward; NAV allocation supports fractional units Recurring purchases depend on broker features; exchange units are whole units
Visible fund cost Expense ratio, plus fund-level transaction and implementation effects Expense ratio, plus brokerage, bid-ask spread, demat and other trading charges
Liquidity mechanism Redemption through the fund’s mutual-fund process Depends on exchange volume, market makers and the spread
Price control No intraday price selection; the applicable NAV is used Limit or market orders can control how you seek execution
Tracking considerations Tracking difference and tracking error against the Nifty 50 Tracking difference and error, plus market-price-to-NAV slippage

Index-fund costs

  • Direct-plan TER: compare the current direct-plan expense ratio among comparable funds. A regular plan may include distribution compensation, so do not compare it with a direct plan as if they were identical.
  • Tracking difference: expenses, cash balances, transaction costs, corporate actions and operational timing can make returns differ from the Nifty 50.
  • Platform charges: some platforms may charge account, transaction or service fees. Check whether these are recurring or per transaction.
  • Exit load, if any: read the scheme document for redemption charges and the holding period that triggers them. Do not assume every index fund has the same rule.

ETF costs

  • TER: this is deducted inside the ETF and reduces NAV over time.
  • Brokerage and exchange charges: buying or selling can attract brokerage and statutory or exchange-related charges, depending on your broker and order.
  • Bid-ask spread: the difference between the best available buying and selling prices is an immediate trading cost. A low TER does not compensate for a persistently wide spread.
  • Demat costs: account maintenance or other depository charges may apply even when the ETF’s TER is low.
  • Premium or discount to NAV: paying above NAV or selling below NAV creates an additional performance drag that is separate from the fund’s expenses.

For a fair comparison, estimate the rupee cost of your own transaction pattern. A small monthly ETF purchase can lose a larger percentage to fixed charges and spread than a large lump-sum purchase, while a mutual-fund SIP may avoid exchange-order costs but still incur platform fees.

Tracking difference and tracking error

Neither vehicle can match the Nifty 50 perfectly. NSE defines tracking error as the annualised standard deviation of the difference between a fund’s returns and those of its target index. A lower tracking error indicates more consistent replication, but it should be read alongside the average tracking difference.

Tracking difference is the actual return gap over a period. If a fund earns less than the Nifty 50 after costs, its tracking difference is negative. Tracking error measures how variable that gap is. A fund could have a modest average shortfall but occasional large deviations, or a stable but consistently negative difference.

Common causes include:

  • TER and other fund expenses;
  • brokerage and taxes when the portfolio is rebalanced;
  • cash held for subscriptions, redemptions or operational needs;
  • investor inflows and outflows that arrive at different times;
  • corporate actions, index rebalances and the timing of constituent trades;
  • sampling or optimisation instead of holding every constituent in the exact index weight; and
  • for ETFs, the market price moving away from NAV and the spread paid by the investor.

Review at least three years of published tracking data when available. Compare like with like: the same benchmark version, the same period and the same plan or ETF. A single recent month can be distorted by an index rebalance or unusual market conditions.

SIP, lump sums and fractional investing

Why index funds suit many SIP investors

A mutual-fund SIP instructs the platform to invest a rupee amount on a schedule. The NAV determines how many units you receive, so the entire amount can be allocated even when the unit price is high. This is useful for salary-linked investing and for investors who do not want to watch market hours.

The order is not an intraday bet. Your result depends on the applicable NAV under the fund’s processing rules, rather than on whether you happened to place an order during a temporary market spike or dip.

When an ETF can work for recurring purchases

Some brokers offer recurring ETF purchases, but the experience varies. You may need to specify a number of whole units rather than a rupee amount, and the purchase may fail or leave cash uninvested when the price exceeds your chosen budget. Check whether the broker supports scheduled orders, fractional exposure through another mechanism, and automatic handling of failed or partially filled orders.

For a larger lump sum, an ETF can be attractive when its order book is deep and the spread is narrow. You can use a limit order and choose the price you are willing to pay. That control is useful, but it also means your order might not execute at all if the market does not reach your limit.

Liquidity, spreads and execution quality

Mutual funds provide a redemption mechanism through the fund house. You do not need another investor to take the other side of your redemption request. The fund processes it under its scheme rules and pays the applicable redemption value, less any permitted charges.

ETF liquidity is visible on the exchange, but displayed volume alone is not enough. Check the current bid and ask, the quantity available at each price and how closely the traded price follows NAV. An ETF with high assets under management can still have a wide spread if its market-making or trading activity is weak.

A safer ETF order routine

  1. Open the ETF’s quote screen during normal market hours and note the latest NAV or indicative value if your broker displays it.
  2. Inspect the bid-ask spread and the quantities available at the best prices.
  3. Prefer a limit order when you want to control the maximum purchase price or minimum sale price.
  4. Avoid assuming that the last traded price is still available; it may be stale in a thin market.
  5. After execution, compare the fill price with the contemporaneous NAV or indicative value to understand the premium or discount you paid.

How to start with a Nifty 50 index mutual fund

  1. Choose the plan type: if you are investing independently, examine direct plans and their current TER. Confirm that the scheme’s stated benchmark is the Nifty 50 index you intend to track.
  2. Read the current scheme documents: check tracking history, replication method, fund size, exit-load rules, minimum investment and service processes.
  3. Complete account and KYC requirements: use the fund house or a regulated platform and verify bank details before setting a mandate.
  4. Set the SIP amount and date: choose an amount you can maintain through market cycles. The platform will allocate fractional units at the applicable NAV.
  5. Review periodically, not daily: check the fund’s factsheet for TER and tracking data, and confirm that your SIP mandate and bank account remain active.

How to start with a Nifty 50 ETF

  1. Confirm account access: you need an active trading account linked to a demat account, with sufficient cash and the ability to place exchange orders.
  2. Shortlist for execution quality: review at least three years of tracking data, current TER, fund size, typical volume, spread and the ETF’s premium or discount to NAV.
  3. Decide your order size: remember that units are whole numbers. Keep enough cash for the purchase price and applicable charges.
  4. Use a limit order when appropriate: specify the maximum price you will pay rather than accepting an unexpectedly wide spread. A limit order can remain unfilled.
  5. Verify the trade: check the executed price, quantity, charges and the resulting demat holding. Keep the contract note for tax records.
  6. Plan the exit: use the same spread and liquidity checks when selling. A fund that was easy to buy may be less attractive to exit during a stressed session.

Tax treatment in India

For transfers on or after 23 July 2024, the Income Tax Department lists a 20% short-term capital-gains tax rate for qualifying STT-paid equity shares or units of an equity-oriented mutual fund. Under Section 112A, long-term capital gains on such assets above ₹1.25 lakh are taxed at 12.5%, subject to the statutory conditions.

The exact result depends on the security’s classification, holding period, transaction dates, STT treatment, your other gains and the tax rules applicable to you. Maintain purchase dates, quantities, costs and sale records for both ETFs and mutual funds, and verify the current Income Tax Department guidance or obtain professional advice before filing or selling for tax reasons.

Which investor should choose which?

Choose the index mutual fund when simplicity is the priority

  • You invest a fixed amount every month.
  • You want the full rupee amount invested through fractional units.
  • You do not have, or do not want to maintain, a demat account.
  • You prefer an end-of-day NAV process instead of monitoring exchange prices.
  • You want the fund platform to handle unit allocation and recurring instructions.

Choose the ETF when control and trading efficiency matter

  • You already maintain a trading and demat account.
  • You invest larger lump sums or make fewer, larger purchases.
  • You understand limit orders, bid-ask spreads and price-versus-NAV differences.
  • The ETF has consistently strong liquidity and close tracking.
  • You value intraday execution and the ability to choose your order price.

Use a two-part decision test

  1. Test operational fit: can you invest your intended amount without unwanted whole-unit leftovers, and are you comfortable with the account and order process?
  2. Test economic fit: estimate TER, platform or demat charges, brokerage, spread and expected tracking difference over your expected holding period.

If either test fails, the other vehicle is probably the better operational choice even when its headline TER looks less attractive.

What to compare before investing

Use a dated factsheet, scheme information document and your broker’s current charge schedule. Record the figures so you are comparing the same date and period.

Check What to look for Why it matters
Benchmark Exact Nifty 50 benchmark and index version A different benchmark is not a like-for-like comparison
Three-year tracking data Average tracking difference and tracking error Shows realised replication rather than relying on TER alone
Current TER Direct-plan expense ratio for a mutual fund; ETF TER for an ETF TER is a recurring internal cost
Fund size and operations Assets, replication method, cash policy and service record Scale and process can influence implementation and liquidity
ETF market quality Typical volume, bid-ask spread and premium or discount to NAV Determines the price you may actually receive
Account and transaction charges Platform, brokerage, exchange and demat fees External charges can reverse a TER advantage
Exit rules Exit load, settlement process and redemption instructions Affects the cost and timing of selling

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Picking the lowest TER automatically

TER is visible and easy to rank, but it excludes many ETF trading costs and does not show how closely a fund has tracked the index. Start with realised tracking difference, then add the costs specific to your account and order pattern.

Using a market order in a thin ETF

A market order can execute across several prices when the order book is shallow. Inspect the spread and use a limit order when price control matters.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every ETF is equally liquid

“ETF” describes the structure, not the quality of the secondary market. Check current trading activity and the consistency of the spread before buying.

Ignoring fractional-unit friction

A fixed monthly budget may not translate neatly into whole ETF units. Repeated cash leftovers can reduce the amount actually invested and complicate automation.

Comparing different dates or plans

TERs, tracking figures and spreads change. Compare the same measurement period and distinguish direct from regular mutual-fund plans.

Trading too often because ETFs trade intraday

Intraday access is a feature, not a requirement. Frequent switching can add brokerage, spread and tax events without improving long-term exposure to the Nifty 50.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How the market uses each structure

Nifty Indices reported that, as of 30 June 2025, Nifty 50 ETFs represented 50% of total equity-ETF assets under management, while Nifty 50 index funds represented 43% of total equity-index-fund assets. These are category-level shares for that date, not a claim that one structure will outperform the other or that every product has the same liquidity and tracking quality.

The figures do show that both structures are established ways to obtain Nifty 50 exposure. Your decision should still be based on the specific fund, its current data and the way you will transact.

A practical selection rule

For a hands-off monthly investor, begin with direct Nifty 50 index mutual funds and compare tracking history, TER, exit rules and service quality. For an investor with an existing demat account and larger, less frequent orders, begin with liquid Nifty 50 ETFs and compare the all-in execution cost, not just the TER.

Whichever route you select, keep the benchmark consistent, review dated tracking data and account for the costs that appear outside the fund’s NAV. The structure should make disciplined investing easier rather than adding a process you are unlikely to maintain.
