Neither an index mutual fund nor an exchange-traded fund (ETF) is automatically better for every long-term Indian investor. Both can provide exposure to an index; the practical difference is how you buy and sell. An index mutual fund is transacted through the mutual-fund process at its net asset value (NAV), while an ETF trades on an exchange at a market price that changes as trades take place. Choose by comparing products that follow the same index, including their costs and tracking records, and by deciding which transaction process suits you.
Are index funds and ETFs the same thing?
They can pursue a similar investment objective, but they are not the same investment format. An index mutual fund is a mutual-fund scheme that seeks to follow an index. SEBI describes these funds as holding all or most of the securities in the target index, in corresponding proportions. An ETF can also seek to track an index, but its units are bought and sold on a stock exchange rather than through the ordinary mutual-fund transaction route. SEBI’s explanation of index mutual funds and its ETF investor page describe these respective structures.
That distinction matters because “index” describes the investment approach, while “mutual fund” and “ETF” describe different ways a fund is structured and transacted. Comparing the words alone does not tell you which specific product is cheaper, tracks its benchmark more closely, or fits your circumstances. For a useful comparison, first match the index and exposure; then compare the actual schemes and how you would transact in them.

In other words, an index fund and an ETF are not opposites in the sense of one being actively managed and the other necessarily passive. Both formats can seek to follow an index. The question is not simply whether you want index exposure, but which product gives you the exposure you intend and whether its transaction mechanics, costs and disclosed tracking record suit you.

How do buying and selling work?
Index mutual fund: mutual-fund transactions at NAV
NSE describes traditional mutual-fund purchases as being made at the NAV published at the end of each trading day. That means the transaction follows the mutual-fund process rather than an exchange order whose price moves during market trading. The exact scheme and platform charges are not universal in the sources cited here, so check the relevant scheme and platform information before deciding what a transaction will cost.
The NAV is the value used for the mutual-fund transaction, not a live exchange quote that changes every time a trade is made. This can be a straightforward fit if you prefer to invest through a mutual-fund platform or the scheme’s usual transaction route. It does not mean the investment’s value is fixed: the value of an index-linked portfolio can change, while the transaction price is determined through the NAV process.
ETF: exchange orders at a changing market price
An ETF trades on an exchange much like a share. SEBI explains that its price changes as trading takes place in the market. An order is therefore executed through exchange trading, rather than simply at the end-of-day NAV used for a traditional mutual-fund purchase. SEBI also notes that ETF units cannot be bought or sold fractionally, and that broker commission and demat charges may apply. Check the order size you can afford and the charges for your own account and transactions.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteSEBI’s investor page puts the distinction plainly: “Unlike regular mutual funds, ETFs trade like a common stock on the stock exchange and the price of an ETF changes as per the trading in the market takes place.” The statement explains the format; it is not a claim that every ETF will be easy to trade at every moment or that its market price will always equal its underlying NAV. Consider the actual ETF’s trading conditions and your transaction costs.
The practical contrast is between NAV-based mutual-fund transactions and exchange execution. NSE’s comparison of ETFs with other mutual funds sets out this difference. Neither method is inherently superior: the right fit depends on whether you prefer mutual-fund transactions or are comfortable placing exchange orders and managing the associated account and costs.
Which costs should you compare?
Do not decide from the expense ratio alone. It is one element of a fund’s ongoing cost, but it does not tell you by itself how closely the product has tracked its index or what it will cost you to transact. The costs that matter also differ by format: an ETF investor may face brokerage and demat charges, while scheme- or platform-specific charges for an index mutual fund need to be checked for that particular route.
| What to check | Index mutual fund | ETF |
|---|---|---|
| Ongoing scheme cost | Compare the scheme’s stated expense ratio and details. | Compare the ETF’s stated expense ratio and details. |
| Transaction costs | Verify any scheme- or platform-specific charges for your route; the cited pages do not establish one universal schedule. | Include any broker commission and demat charges that apply to your account and transactions. |
| Price at transaction | NSE describes traditional mutual-fund purchases at the NAV published at the end of each trading day. | The order trades on an exchange at a market price that changes with trading. |
| Unit size | Check the scheme and platform for their applicable transaction requirements. | SEBI says ETF units cannot be bought or sold fractionally. |
| Tracking record | Compare tracking information for the scheme, benchmark and matching period. | Compare tracking information for the ETF, benchmark and matching period, alongside its trading conditions. |
Think about your own transaction size and frequency when assessing charges. An ETF’s exchange access does not by itself establish that trading it will be easy or inexpensive for you. Likewise, do not assume a mutual-fund route has no costs simply because the transaction is not an exchange trade. Obtain the current details for the specific product and service you intend to use; SEBI and NSE’s comparison pages do not provide a universal, current charge schedule for all schemes, brokers or platforms.

It is useful to separate costs into two questions. First, what ongoing scheme cost is disclosed? Compare the stated expense ratios of the actual products. Second, what will your own route of buying and selling cost? For an ETF, that can include brokerage and demat charges; for an index mutual fund, verify the applicable scheme or platform details. A small difference in a stated expense ratio does not by itself answer the second question, and transaction costs may depend on your account and how often or how much you trade.
Unit size is another practical point, rather than a performance measure. SEBI says ETF units cannot be transacted fractionally, so do not assume you can buy an arbitrary fraction of a unit to match a desired investment amount. Check the practical amount required for an order. For an index mutual fund, the sources cited here do not establish one universal minimum or transaction requirement, so confirm it with the particular scheme and platform rather than applying an ETF rule to a mutual fund.
How to compare index tracking fairly
Index funds and ETFs seek to follow an index, but their returns need not match it exactly. SEBI defines tracking error as a measure of the difference between a portfolio’s returns and its benchmark’s returns. Its investor explanation describes tracking error as the standard deviation of those return differences over a period. In other words, it measures the variability of the gap; it is not a promise that a product will match or beat its benchmark. See SEBI’s explanation of tracking error.
Tracking difference answers a related but distinct question: it is the annualized return difference between the product and its benchmark. Tracking error focuses on how variable the return gap has been; tracking difference shows the size and direction of the gap over the stated period. A product can have a relatively steady gap that still leaves it behind its index, so these measures should not be treated as interchangeable. Compare the disclosures for the product and period you are actually evaluating.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
For example, a tracking-error figure is not a return forecast and does not say that a fund will outperform. It tells you about the variability of the historical return gap over the specified period. Tracking difference, by contrast, helps show how much the fund’s return differed from its benchmark on an annualized basis during that period. Read both with their dates and periods in view; a figure without a matching benchmark and timeframe is not a sound basis for ranking products.
NSE lists inflows and outflows, corporate actions, index changes, cash held for liquidity and expenses among factors that can affect tracking error. That is why a lower expense ratio alone cannot settle which product has delivered the closer outcome. For its discussion of possible influences, see NSE’s tracking-error information. These operating factors also explain why tracking is not guaranteed to be exact even when a product’s stated aim is to follow an index.
Use comparable products and periods
- Match the benchmark. Check the exact index each product follows and confirm that the exposure is relevant to your comparison. Products with different benchmarks are not a like-for-like comparison just because both are described as index products.
- Check the stated costs. Compare each product’s expense ratio, then identify transaction costs that apply to your own route. For an ETF, include applicable brokerage and demat charges; for an index mutual fund, verify the relevant scheme- or platform-specific details.
- Compare tracking difference over matching periods. Look at the product’s annualized return gap against its own benchmark over periods that align across the products. Do not compare a short period for one with a different or longer period for another and treat the result as decisive.
- Check tracking error as a separate measure. Read it as variability in the return gap over the period, not as the amount by which the product will outperform or underperform in the future.
- Assess the actual transaction route. Consider NAV-based mutual-fund transactions or exchange orders, and account for the costs and practical requirements of the route you will use.
A past tracking record is information about the stated product and period, not a guarantee of future tracking. Use it alongside the index, scheme details and total costs rather than turning one disclosed figure into a universal ranking.

A practical comparison therefore starts with two actual products rather than the broad labels. Confirm that both follow the same benchmark; then compare each product’s expense ratio, tracking difference and tracking error using corresponding periods. Next, add the costs and constraints of the route you would use. If the periods, benchmark or disclosures do not line up, be cautious about drawing a winner from the comparison. No scheme-level data here supports naming a particular current best index fund or ETF.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDoes an ETF always have better liquidity or lower costs?
No such blanket conclusion follows from the fact that an ETF trades on an exchange. Exchange trading makes it possible to place trades during market hours, but it does not establish that every ETF is equally easy or inexpensive to trade. Trading activity and transaction charges are relevant to an ETF investor’s experience. Evaluate the particular ETF and your own costs instead of assuming that exchange access guarantees better liquidity or a lower total cost.
The reverse shortcut is also unhelpful: the mutual-fund process is not automatically cheaper for every investor. A fair decision considers the ongoing scheme cost, tracking record and charges associated with the investor’s actual transaction route. The official comparison establishes different mechanics and possible charges, not a current product-by-product winner.
Likewise, the fact that an ETF is exchange-traded should not be confused with a guarantee about the price at which a transaction will occur. Its market price changes with trading, while a traditional mutual-fund purchase is described by NSE as taking place at the end-of-day NAV. The two prices arise through different transaction processes. Evaluate the ETF’s trading activity and your own intended order, and do not infer a universal advantage from the format alone.
Which format may suit your investing process?
An index mutual fund may fit a NAV-based routine
If you prefer to transact through the mutual-fund process rather than place exchange orders, an index mutual fund may fit that routine. Before investing, verify the scheme’s benchmark, expense ratio, tracking information and any charges for the platform or route you plan to use. The format itself does not guarantee better tracking or lower cost; those are product-level questions.
This choice may also simplify the decision about how an order is priced: NSE describes a traditional mutual-fund purchase as being made at the NAV published at the end of each trading day. That is different from watching an exchange price move as ETF trades occur. It does not establish that the mutual-fund route is always more convenient, nor does it remove the need to review scheme and platform requirements. Confirm the specific process before relying on it.
An ETF may fit an exchange-trading routine
If you already use, or are comfortable using, exchange trading and the required demat access, an ETF may fit your process. Check its benchmark and tracking record, confirm the order size works for you given that ETF units cannot be split into fractions, and include applicable broker and demat charges. Also consider the ETF’s trading conditions rather than treating its exchange listing as proof that every order will be equally convenient or economical.

The format requires attention to the transaction itself as well as the fund’s ongoing disclosures. You are placing an exchange order at a market price that changes as trading takes place, and SEBI notes possible broker commission and demat charges. Work out whether those conditions suit your planned transactions. Do not assume that exchange trading means you can buy fractional units, avoid costs, or obtain a particular price.
Let the same-index comparison decide
When both formats are workable, compare specific products following the same index. A long-term holding period does not remove the importance of the initial transaction route, recurring product costs or the record of tracking the benchmark. But it also does not make one format categorically better. Without current, comparable scheme-level information and a defined investor context, naming an overall winner would go beyond what the official sources establish.
A sensible order of operations is: establish that the benchmark is the one you want; compare costs and tracking disclosures over aligned periods; then decide whether NAV-based mutual-fund transactions or exchange trading better suits your routine. If one route involves charges or practical requirements that do not work for you, that can matter even if its expense ratio looks attractive. The choice should reflect the product and the investor’s process, not a generic rule about all ETFs or all index mutual funds.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about tax?
Tax treatment is not a safe shortcut for choosing between an index mutual fund and an ETF. The official material cited here does not establish a tax comparison across fund categories, holding periods and individual circumstances. Do not assume that one format has a tax advantage based only on its label; check current official tax guidance for the specific investment and your circumstances before acting.
In particular, the words “ETF” and “index fund” by themselves are not enough to settle a tax question. A meaningful comparison would need to account for the relevant investment category, holding period and investor situation. If tax consequences could affect your choice, verify current official guidance applicable to the specific products rather than relying on a general claim that one format is always more tax-efficient.
A practical decision checklist
- Do the products follow the same index and provide comparable exposure?
- Have you compared their expense ratios and tracking records for matching periods?
- For an ETF, have you checked trading activity, minimum practical order size and any applicable brokerage and demat charges?
- For an index mutual fund, have you confirmed the NAV-based transaction route and checked applicable scheme- or platform-specific charges?
- Are you comparing product disclosures rather than assuming that all ETFs or all index mutual funds behave alike?
- Is your conclusion based on your transaction process and relevant product details, rather than an unsupported claim that one format always wins?
Before making the comparison, write down the exact benchmark and the transaction route you expect to use. Then gather the corresponding expense ratio, tracking difference and tracking error for each product, taking care that the dates and periods match. Finally, check charges and practical requirements with the relevant scheme, platform, broker or demat provider. This small sequence helps prevent common errors: comparing different indices, treating tracking error as return, overlooking transaction costs, or assuming that all exchange-traded products are equally tradeable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are ETFs and index funds the same?
No. Both can seek exposure to an index, but an index mutual fund uses the mutual-fund transaction process, while ETF units trade on an exchange at a market price that changes with trading. SEBI says index mutual funds hold all or most of the target index securities in corresponding proportions; the formats differ in how investors transact.
Is an index mutual fund bought at NAV?
NSE describes traditional mutual-fund purchases as being made at the NAV published at the end of each trading day. An ETF, by contrast, is bought and sold through exchange orders at a market price that changes as trades take place.
Can I buy a fraction of an ETF unit?
SEBI states that ETF units cannot be bought or sold fractionally. Check the practical order amount for the ETF you are considering. Do not assume the same unit-size rule applies to every index mutual fund; confirm that scheme’s and platform’s transaction requirements.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Are ETFs always cheaper or more liquid than index mutual funds?
No. Exchange trading does not guarantee that every ETF is equally easy or inexpensive to trade. ETF investors may face broker commission and demat charges, while mutual-fund costs depend on the particular scheme and platform. Compare actual trading conditions, applicable charges, expense ratios and tracking records rather than assuming one format always wins.
Should I choose based on tracking error or expense ratio?
Neither figure should be used alone. Compare expense ratios and tracking difference, which measures the annualized return gap, as well as tracking error, which measures variability in the return gap over a period. Match the benchmark and comparison periods, and consider your transaction costs and route.
Does an ETF have a tax advantage over an index mutual fund in India?
The cited SEBI and NSE material does not establish a general tax advantage across fund categories, holding periods and investor circumstances. Do not infer tax treatment from the product label; check current official tax guidance for the specific investment and your situation.
The Bottom Line
Neither format is universally better. Compare an index mutual fund and an ETF only after confirming that they follow the same benchmark; then review expense ratios, tracking difference and tracking error over comparable periods. Include the costs and practical requirements of your transaction route: NAV-based mutual-fund transactions or ETF exchange orders, possible brokerage and demat charges, ETF unit sizes, and the scheme- or platform-specific details that apply. Choose the format that fits your investing process and the specific product evidence, not a blanket claim that one always costs less, tracks better or offers better liquidity.
