Use File > Save to update the document you are already working in. Choose File > Save As to create a newly named working file and continue editing that file. Choose File > Save a Copy to create a separate version while keeping the original document active.
What each InDesign save command does
| Command | What it writes | Document left active | Available for cloud documents? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Save | Updates the current document. | The current document. | Not specified by Adobe in the cited command guidance. |
| Save As | Creates a file under a new name and location. | The newly named file. | Not specified by Adobe in the cited command guidance. |
| Save a Copy | Creates a separate file without changing the active document. | The original document. | No. Adobe says Save a Copy is unavailable for InDesign cloud documents. |
Adobe’s instructions for these commands are in its InDesign document-saving guide. The key distinction is not just whether another file is created: it is which document remains open for your next edit.
How to choose the right command
- Keep working in the same file: choose File > Save.
- Rename or relocate the working file: choose File > Save As. The newly named file becomes active.
- Make a snapshot or backup, then keep editing the original: choose File > Save a Copy. The original remains active.
How to save a copy without changing your original
- Open the InDesign document you want to preserve.
- Choose File > Save a Copy.
- In the save dialog, enter a filename and choose the destination, then select Save.
- Before relying on the copy, verify its filename and location in the file browser. Check the document tab as well to confirm the source document is still the one open for editing.
If you instead choose File > Save As, enter the new filename and destination, and save, InDesign switches to the newly named document. Confirm the name and location in the dialog before saving so you know which file will become your working document.
Saving cloud documents
Save a Copy is unavailable for InDesign cloud documents, according to Adobe’s cloud document guidance. Adobe documents a separate Duplicate action in the Your files area for making another cloud document; this is a management action, not the same File-menu command. See Adobe’s cloud document management instructions.

Cloud documents are distinct from locally saved INDD files and Creative Cloud synced files. Adobe describes cloud-document access across devices, autosaving, and version history, but its cloud documents FAQ notes that autosave is currently disabled for large-scale documents. Do not assume every cloud document is always autosaved.
Compatibility and collaboration edge cases
Use IDML for compatibility, not as a guaranteed identical copy
Adobe describes IDML as a format that can help with compatibility and troubleshooting, including opening documents in supported earlier InDesign versions. Conversion may not preserve some newer features, so IDML is not a guaranteed lossless substitute for saving another INDD copy. Adobe’s saving guide covers the format and its limitations.

Check linked InCopy content in managed workflows
For documents with InCopy-managed content, Adobe says Save As and Save a Copy can retain links to existing InCopy files. Assignments may appear missing or out of date until updated. This concerns collaborative editorial workflows rather than ordinary standalone documents; see Adobe’s managed-file guidance.

Recovery files are not a substitute for saving
InDesign recovery data is temporary and is normally deleted after documents are saved or closed normally. Adobe recommends storing recovery data on a local drive with adequate space and reliable performance; network locations can slow saves or lead to recovery failures if a connection is interrupted. Recovery can help after an interruption, but it does not replace deliberately saving the document or creating a separate copy. See Adobe’s document recovery guidance.

Consider whether the identification benefit is worth the extra size and saving overhead; details are in Adobe’s saving guide.
