For cleaner InDesign paragraphs, set keep behavior to prevent headings from separating from their text, choose the correct language before adjusting hyphenation, select a composer suited to the passage, and inspect justified spacing at the final column width. These controls work together: changing one can reflow nearby lines, so review the finished composition after each edit.
Keep a heading with the paragraph it introduces
Keep Options control paragraph relationships and flow. To keep a heading from sitting alone at the bottom of a page or column, select the heading paragraph, open the Paragraph panel menu, and choose Keep Options. Set how many lines of the following paragraph must stay with it. For a repeatable layout, save the behavior in the heading’s paragraph style. Adobe documents these settings in its paragraph break options help.
To see when text violates keep settings, enable Keep Violations under Edit > Preferences > Composition on Windows or InDesign > Preferences > Composition on macOS. This is a paragraph-flow diagnostic, distinct from the H&J spacing indicator discussed below.

Keep settings versus inserted breaks
A keep setting describes a paragraph relationship; a page, column, or frame break character creates a specific break at its insertion point. Break characters can override paragraph settings. Use a manual break when you intend a fixed break, not as a substitute for keeping a heading with its text. Column, frame, and page breaks require threaded text frames; a break without a subsequent frame can leave text overset.

Set the text language before tuning hyphenation
Select the text and choose its language in the Properties panel’s Character section, or assign it through a paragraph or character style. InDesign uses the selected language to determine the dictionary and hyphenation rules. A character style’s language setting can override the paragraph style’s setting. See Adobe’s language settings guidance.
Control where and how often words hyphenate
Place the insertion point in a paragraph or select the paragraphs, then choose Window > Type & Tables > Paragraph and select Hyphenate. Open the Paragraph panel menu and choose Hyphenation to tune the rules. The available controls let you balance fewer broken words against more even spacing; their visual effect depends on the copy, language, font, and column width. Adobe describes the options in its hyphenation and word-break help.
Rank #2
- Words with at Least: Set the minimum word length eligible for a break.
- After First and Before Last: Set the minimum number of characters on each side of a break. Adobe describes two or three characters as typical.
- Hyphen Limit: Set the maximum number of consecutive lines ending in hyphens. A value of zero permits unlimited consecutive hyphens.
- Hyphenation Zone: In unjustified text, set how much white space is allowed at line endings; a larger zone reduces hyphenation.
- Better Spacing–Fewer Hyphens: Choose the balance between more even spacing and fewer hyphenated words.
Deselect Hyphenate Capitalized Words, Hyphenate Last Word, or Hyphenate Across Column if you do not want those kinds of breaks. To prohibit line-ending breaks in a particular paragraph, turn off Hyphenate for that paragraph.
Handle individual words deliberately
For a word that should break only at a chosen point, insert a discretionary hyphen; it appears only when the word falls at a line end. A discretionary hyphen placed at the start of a word prevents that word from hyphenating. To keep material on one line, use No Break, a nonbreaking hyphen, or a nonbreaking space as appropriate. A nonbreaking space can change width with point size and justification; its fixed-width version retains its width.

Choose a paragraph composer for the kind of control you need
Select the paragraph, then open the Paragraph or Control panel menu and choose Adobe Paragraph Composer or Adobe Single-line Composer. The composer determines how InDesign evaluates line breaks; it does not replace the hyphenation or justification settings. Adobe’s text composition help explains both modes.
| Option | Useful when | Tradeoff to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Adobe Paragraph Composer | Long-form paragraphs benefit from consistent overall text color and fewer awkward breaks. | An edit can shift earlier lines because InDesign composes the paragraph as a whole. |
| Adobe Single-line Composer | A heading, pull quote, or short passage needs local line control. | Spacing can be less consistent and hyphenation may increase. |
Paragraph Composer evaluates the paragraph as a whole and can move an earlier line to improve a later break. Adobe says it typically produces more even text color and fewer hyphens, making it suitable for long-form material. Single-line Composer finalizes each line before composing the next, which gives more local control but can make spacing or hyphenation less favorable. Choose based on the passage, then check the result in context.

Set alignment and justification to suit the column
Use the alignment buttons in the Paragraph or Control panel. Justified alignment aligns text to both edges; the options determine whether the final line remains natural or is stretched too. Adobe’s alignment and justification help describes these controls.

|---|---|---|
| Ragged alignment | Leaves a natural, uneven line ending rather than aligning both edges. | The right edge will not align. |
| Justify Left or Justify Right | Aligns text to both edges while leaving the final line un-justified. | Tight columns can produce uneven word spacing on other lines. |
| Justify All | Justifies every line, including the last. | A short final line can stretch conspicuously. |
With Paragraph Composer, InDesign can shift line breaks to maintain consistent text density. Justification settings define the permitted word spacing, letter spacing, and glyph scaling. Full justification is not automatically an improvement: inspect the paragraph at its final measure with the chosen font and language. If gaps are conspicuous, revisit the permitted justification and hyphenation settings, or revise the wording if editorially appropriate.
When the last line of a story contains only a few characters, Adobe notes that a special end-of-story character and flush space can be used. This is a targeted layout technique, not a reason to justify every short final line.
Find spacing problems and review the reflow
To highlight spacing issues, turn on H&J Violations under Edit > Preferences > Composition on Windows or InDesign > Preferences > Composition on macOS. Yellow highlighting indicates spacing problems according to the justification settings and their severity. It appears only in InDesign; it does not print or export. Adobe documents the diagnostic in Highlight spacing issues in InDesign.
Quick Recap
- Locate highlighted lines and assess whether the spacing is actually distracting in the intended layout.
- Where needed, adjust justification or hyphenation settings, or revise the wording if allowed.
- After each change, inspect the surrounding paragraph again: a composer can reflow nearby lines, even when the edit seems local.
- Accept a flagged line if it meets the publication’s layout standards; the highlight is a diagnostic, not an automatic instruction to change the text.
