To create a left-and-right opening spread in InDesign, turn on Facing Pages and set the document to 2 pages. For an existing document, also check the section’s starting page number: facing pages alone do not determine whether the first page sits on the left or right.
Set up a new document with a two-page opening
- Choose File > New > Document.
- Choose the intended page size and set Pages to 2.
- Select Facing Pages. This arranges pages as left and right pages in spreads. Adobe’s new-document instructions describe the setting and spread layout.
- Set columns, margins, and bleed as needed, then choose Create. With facing pages, the margin controls use Inside and Outside; reserve inside space for binding where appropriate.
Turn on Facing Pages in an existing document
- Choose File > Document Setup.
- Select Facing Pages, then choose OK. Adobe documents this setting for switching a document between single-page and spread layouts in its document setup guide.
- If the opening should contain two pages, set Number of Pages to 2 in Document Setup, as described in Adobe’s multi-page spread instructions. Check the Pages panel afterward, especially if the document already contains designed pages.
Check which side the opening page occupies
Facing Pages controls the spread layout; it does not by itself guarantee that the first page appears on the left. Page numbering and section settings affect whether pages are treated as right-hand (recto) or left-hand (verso) pages. To inspect them, select a page in the document and choose Layout > Numbering & Section Options. There you can use automatic numbering or choose Start Page Numbering at and select a numbering style. Adobe explains the relationship between numbering and page position in its document numbering guide.
Choose the starting number according to the intended pagination and binding direction, then confirm the result in the Pages panel. Do not assume a particular starting number applies to every book or project. A spread shown in InDesign is a layout arrangement, not proof of how a printer or PDF export will impose pages.
Add page numbers to both sides of the spread
If you want visible folios, add a separate page-number marker text frame to each side’s parent page. On each parent page, place the text cursor in its frame and choose Type > Insert Special Character > Markers > Current Page Number. Separate left- and right-side frames let each number sit in the intended position. See Adobe’s page-number marker instructions.

Choose the layout that matches the project
- Single-page layout: Use it when pages are designed or delivered individually rather than as facing spreads.
- Facing Pages: Use it for layouts such as books or magazines where adjacent left and right pages need to be viewed together. Plan binding space at the inside margin.
- One-page opening: Keep the opening to one page if that is what the design requires.
- Two-page opening: Set the page count to 2 and enable Facing Pages when the design needs an opening spread.
Menu labels may vary between InDesign versions. If a label differs, look for the equivalent document setup, facing-page, or numbering control.
