To increase an image’s pixel dimensions in Photoshop, open Image > Image Size, turn on Resample, enter the target pixel dimensions, and choose an enlargement method. This adds estimated pixels, not details that were never captured. If you only need to change the print size, leave Resample off; changing PPI alone does not add pixels.
First decide whether you need more pixels or a different print size
An image’s pixel dimensions describe its actual pixel width and height. For print, those pixels are distributed at a density such as pixels per inch (PPI), which together with the pixel dimensions determines the physical print size. Adobe explains the relationship as physical size = pixel dimensions ÷ resolution. Adobe’s Image Size guide describes 300 ppi as typical for professional printing, but the appropriate value depends on the printer and viewing distance.
With Resample off, changing PPI or physical dimensions leaves the pixel count unchanged. Adobe’s example: a 400 × 400-pixel image at 100 ppi prints at 4 × 4 inches; set it to 2 × 2 inches without resampling, and it is 200 ppi while remaining 400 × 400 pixels. For screen use, focus on pixel dimensions: PPI metadata does not add pixels or determine how many screen pixels the image occupies.
Enlarge pixel dimensions with Image Size
- Open the image and choose Image > Image Size. Check the current pixel dimensions before editing.
- Turn on Resample to change the pixel dimensions. Enter the target width and height in the Pixel Dimensions fields. Keep the proportions linked unless you intentionally want to stretch the image.
- Choose an option in the Resample menu. For enlargement, consider Preserve Details 2.0 or Bicubic Smoother (enlargement); Photoshop also offers Automatic, Preserve Details (enlargement), Bicubic, Bilinear, Bicubic Sharper (reduction), and Nearest Neighbor.
- Apply the change, then inspect the result at 100% and at the intended display or print size. Save a copy so the original remains available.
Adobe describes Preserve Details 2.0 as an enlargement option with a Reduce Noise slider. Nearest Neighbor is intended for hard-edge pixel art or graphics, where preserving crisp pixel boundaries matters more than smooth photographic interpolation. The available choices and labels are documented in Adobe’s Image Size documentation and resampling-method guidance.

What upscaling can and cannot fix
Upsampling estimates values for new pixels from existing image data. It can make an image large enough for a screen layout or print, but it cannot faithfully restore detail that the source never contained. Depending on the image and enlargement, the result may look soft, jagged, blocky, noisy, or show halos around edges. Sharpening can change perceived crispness, but it does not recover missing capture information.
Adobe advises starting with an image sized for the intended output, limiting resampling, and resampling only once where possible. Evaluate artifacts at the size people will actually see; inspecting only a zoomed-in view can make minor defects seem more important than they are, while a small preview can hide flaws.

Choose an enlargement method for the source and use

Use Camera Raw Super Resolution for a supported photo
Adobe Camera Raw’s Enhance workflow offers Super Resolution for supported file types: formats supported by Raw Details, plus JPEG and TIFF. Adobe says it doubles the linear resolution, so both width and height double and the total pixel count becomes four times larger. The enhanced result is created as a DNG.

- Open the image through Camera Raw rather than invoking Filter > Camera Raw Filter inside Photoshop; Adobe says Super Resolution is unavailable through that filter path.
- Use Camera Raw’s Enhance workflow and select Super Resolution.
- Review the enhanced DNG at the intended output size. Adobe says an image can be enhanced only once.
Super Resolution is another way to estimate a larger image, not a guarantee that original fine detail will be recovered. Use Generative Upscale when its model behavior fits
Adobe’s May 2026 Photoshop help page documents Image > Generative Upscale. It creates the upscaled result in a new document and offers 2× or 4× scaling. The documented models have different aims and limits:

These descriptions are not interchangeable: “adds creative detail” signals a different goal from preserving existing detail. For archival, documentary, product, or evidence images, generated features could be mistaken for details in the original. Keep the source file and disclose generative processing when faithful representation matters. Check Adobe’s Generative Upscale documentation for current model availability and limits.

If Preserve Details 2.0 is missing
Adobe labels Enable Preserve Details 2.0 Upscale a technology preview and lists it as on in its February 2026 technology-preview documentation. It is an AI-assisted feature used through Image > Image Size > Resample. If you do not see it, check your installed Photoshop version and preferences; availability and labels may change between releases. Adobe’s status page is at Photoshop technology previews.
Check the result against the actual job
- For a screen image: set pixel dimensions to suit the intended display or placement; changing PPI metadata alone will not enlarge it on screen.
- For print: decide the physical dimensions and ask the print provider what resolution is appropriate. Do not treat 300 ppi as a universal requirement.
- For a cropped photo: first determine whether the crop leaves enough pixels for the output. A larger crop enlargement cannot restore content lost outside the crop.
- For pixel art or hard-edged graphics: test Nearest Neighbor to avoid introducing smoothed edges.
- For faithful records: prefer methods aimed at interpolation or preserving existing detail, and distinguish generated detail from source detail.
In all cases, judge soft edges, halos, blockiness, noise, and texture at the final viewing size. If the enlargement looks poor, a smaller output or a better-resolution source may be more effective than increasing sharpness or applying another round of resampling.
