Windows 11 gives you two useful ways to enlarge what you see: Text size increases Windows text while leaving most interface elements alone, and Display Scale enlarges text, apps, icons, images, and other screen elements together.

Choose Text size if menus and labels are difficult to read but you want to preserve your current layout. Choose Scale if the whole interface is too small. For a temporary close-up, use Magnifier.

Increase only the text size in Windows 11

This is the best option when you want larger text without making every button, icon, and application window bigger.

  • INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
  • THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors

This setting enlarges Windows text such as menu labels, title bars, and icon text. It does not necessarily enlarge every piece of text inside every third-party application. Some programs have their own zoom or text-size settings.

Make text, apps, and the whole interface bigger

Use display scaling when Windows elements are generally too small. Unlike Text size, scaling affects more than fonts: apps, icons, images, controls, and other interface elements are enlarged as a group.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select System, then select Display.
  3. If you use more than one monitor, select the monitor you want to change at the top of the page.
  4. Scroll to Scale & layout.
  5. Open the Scale menu and choose a larger percentage.

Start with the option marked Recommended if you are unsure. If the screen is still difficult to read, try the next available percentage. The change applies to the selected display, so repeat the process for another monitor if necessary.

Setting What it changes Use it when
Accessibility > Text size Windows text, including labels and menus Only text needs to be larger
System > Display > Scale Text, apps, icons, images, and the overall layout The entire interface looks too small
Accessibility > Magnifier A temporary magnified view of part or all of the screen You need a quick close-up rather than a permanent change

Use Magnifier for temporary enlargement

Magnifier zooms the screen instead of changing Windows’ underlying text-size setting. It is useful for reading a small dialog, inspecting an image, or temporarily enlarging content without changing your normal desktop layout.

To configure it, open Start > Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier, then turn on the Magnifier switch. The page includes options such as Zoom level, Zoom increments, and Smooth edges of images and text. You can also configure the view to follow the mouse pointer, keyboard focus, text cursor, or Narrator cursor.

Action Shortcut
Start Magnifier or increase magnification Windows logo key + Plus (+)
Decrease magnification Windows logo key + Minus (-)
Turn Magnifier off Windows logo key + Esc
Change zoom with a mouse wheel Ctrl + Alt + mouse wheel

Magnifier has three main views:

  • Full screen: enlarges the entire display. Press Ctrl + Alt + F.
  • Docked: keeps a magnified area in a docked section of the screen. Press Ctrl + Alt + D.
  • Lens: follows the pointer in a movable magnified window. Press Ctrl + Alt + L.

Press Ctrl + Alt + M to cycle through views. While zoomed, press Ctrl + Alt + Spacebar to temporarily see the entire screen.

Change font and display size in Windows 10

Windows 10 uses different names and menu locations from Windows 11. Open Start > Settings > Ease of Access > Display. Under the display options, use Make text bigger for text-only enlargement or Make everything bigger to enlarge the broader interface.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These are Windows 10 instructions, not the current Windows 11 path. In Windows 11, look under Accessibility for Text size, or under System > Display for Scale. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so upgrading to a supported version of Windows is preferable where the computer allows it.

Do not lower the screen resolution just to enlarge text

Display resolution and Scale are separate settings. Lowering resolution can make some content appear larger, but it may also make text less sharp. Depending on the monitor, you may see a stretched image, black borders, or a smaller centered picture.

For readable text, use Accessibility > Text size. For a larger overall interface, use System > Display > Scale. Leave resolution at the monitor’s native or Recommended value unless you have a specific reason to change it.

What to try if text is still too small

  1. Use Text size first if only labels and menus are hard to read.
  2. Increase Scale if applications, icons, and controls are also too small.
  3. Check the affected application’s own settings. Browsers, document editors, terminals, and media apps often provide a separate zoom control.
  4. On a multi-monitor setup, return to Settings > System > Display and make sure the correct monitor is selected before changing its scale.
  5. Use Magnifier for a temporary close-up instead of repeatedly changing permanent display settings.

Why did changing Text size not enlarge an app’s text?

Text size mainly affects Windows text. Some third-party applications use their own font or zoom settings and may not respond to the Windows text-size control.

Does Magnifier permanently increase the Windows font size?

No. Magnifier provides a zoomed view of part or all of the screen. Turn it off with Windows logo key + Esc; use Text size or Scale for a persistent change.

Can I make text bigger on only one monitor?

Yes. Open Settings > System > Display, select the monitor you want to modify, then change its setting under Scale & layout. Repeat the process for other displays if needed.

Is changing screen resolution a good way to enlarge fonts?

No. Resolution changes can make the display blurry, stretched, or bordered. Use Text size for fonts or Scale for the entire interface, and keep resolution at the recommended native setting when possible.

The Bottom Line

For Windows 11, use Settings > Accessibility > Text size when you want larger fonts only. Use Settings > System > Display > Scale when the complete interface needs enlarging, and use Magnifier for temporary zooming. Windows 10 uses the older Ease of Access > Display path, but it is no longer supported by Microsoft.
