Short answer: the name on an incoming call is a label assembled by your phone, carrier, or a caller-identification service. It may come from a local contact, a carrier directory, a business database, an identification app, or a shared profile—even when you never saved the number. Dual-SIM selection tells the phone which subscription received the call; it normally does not create a separate caller-name database for SIM 1 and SIM 2. Roaming can change which line is reachable, while privacy and spoofing protections depend on the platform, carrier, country, and enabled services.
Where an incoming caller name comes from
Phones can combine several independent sources. The source that wins depends on the operating system, carrier integration, app permissions, and the order configured in your settings.
Local Contacts
If the incoming number matches a record in your Contacts database, the dialer usually displays that record’s name. Matching can fail when the stored number uses a different country code, trunk prefix, extension, or formatting, or when contacts have not finished syncing.

A mobile operator may return a subscriber or business label for a number that is not in your address book. This is a network lookup, not proof that you previously stored the caller.

Business-identification services
Some phones and carriers identify businesses from their own directories. The result may be a company name, department, or location rather than an individual’s legal name.
Caller-ID apps
A caller-identification or spam app can supply labels and warnings. It may maintain a separate database and can override, supplement, or be shown alongside the phone’s native contact result.
Shared name and photo profiles
On iPhone, Name and Photo Sharing can provide a person’s chosen identity when they call someone. Apple lists Contacts, Name and Photo Sharing, a carrier call directory, Business Call Identification, and caller-identification apps as possible sources (Apple’s caller-identification guidance).
Because these sources are independent, a displayed name is a convenience label, not authentication of who is holding the phone.
Why a saved contact can appear as only a number
Android documents the native display name as a ContactsContract lookup of the incoming handle. The result can be null when no contact matches, the lookup is still incomplete, or the calling service cannot access contacts (Android Call.Details reference).

Check the number format
Edit the contact so it includes the full international country code, then test again. Keep one canonical number for the person and remove obsolete duplicates. A number stored as a local seven- or ten-digit string may not match an incoming international-format number.
Check account and sync status
Confirm that the contact is in the account currently syncing to the device. If you recently changed phones or restored a backup, open Contacts and wait for synchronization to finish before placing a test call.
Check permissions and default dialer
On Android, open Settings > Apps > [your Phone app] > Permissions > Contacts and allow access if you want local names displayed. A third-party dialer or call-screening service may use a different permission state. On iPhone, verify that the relevant account is enabled under Settings > Contacts > Accounts and that the Phone app has access to Contacts.
Allow for lookup timing
Some interfaces show the number first and add a name after a network or local lookup completes. If the name appears only after answering, update the operating system and the caller-ID app, then test with the phone unlocked and connected to data.
Does SIM 1 or SIM 2 determine the name?
Usually, no. The active subscription identifies which line received the call; the name is resolved separately from contacts, carrier directories, business-identification services, or apps. There is no universal rule that SIM 1 has one contact-name database and SIM 2 has another.

Apple’s dual-SIM documentation says, “You can make and receive phone calls with either phone number.” You can label plans and assign a preferred line to a specific contact, but caller-identification settings still describe sources such as Contacts and carrier directories rather than separate name stores for each SIM (Apple dual-SIM guidance; Apple caller-identification guidance).
What line settings actually control
- Default voice line: the number used when a contact has no line preference.
- Contact-specific line: a remembered choice for calling a particular contact.
- Cellular-data line: the subscription used for internet access.
- Incoming-call routing: whether both subscriptions can be reached in the current network conditions.
Changing a contact’s preferred line changes where you call from, not the underlying caller-name record. If two SIMs contain different address books, the visible name can differ because one account is synced or permitted while the other is not; that is an account or permission issue, not a built-in SIM-name database.
What roaming changes
Roaming affects reachability, costs, and network features more than it affects name matching. A common travel setup keeps your home number active while a local travel plan supplies data. Both numbers may make and receive calls, but the non-data line may need carrier Wi-Fi Calling and Allow Cellular Data Switching to receive calls while the other line is using cellular data.
Apple documents these dependencies and warns that Data Roaming can incur charges. It also notes that Visual Voicemail and MMS can be unavailable on a voice-only line when the data line is roaming (Apple roaming and dual-SIM guidance).
Before you travel
- Ask each carrier whether Wi-Fi Calling works abroad and whether it supports dual-SIM standby in your destination.
- Set the intended Cellular Data line and decide whether Allow Cellular Data Switching is acceptable.
- Review Data Roaming on each plan; disable it where your carrier does not include roaming.
- Save important contacts with international country codes.
- Test an incoming call to each number before leaving coverage of your home network.
If a name disappears abroad
First determine whether the call itself reached the expected line. If calls fail or go directly to voicemail, troubleshoot Wi-Fi Calling, data switching, and carrier roaming before changing contacts. If the call connects but only the label is missing, check contact synchronization, permissions, and whether the carrier or identification app works in that country. A roaming network may not provide the same directory data as your home network.

What caller-ID services can learn
Privacy behavior differs by service. Google’s Phone app help says it may send a remote number from a caller or receiver outside your contacts to Google for caller-ID and spam determination. Google states, “Google doesn’t get phone numbers from your contact list,” and says it does not share remote phone numbers or this data with business partners (Google’s caller-ID and spam explanation; Google’s caller-ID settings).
You can turn off See caller and spam ID in the Phone app’s caller-ID and spam settings. Doing so stops the warnings and the collection associated with that feature; it can also remove useful business labels and spam alerts.
Apple describes a different privacy architecture for Live Caller ID Lookup. Its documentation says the design hides the client’s IP address with Oblivious HTTP, uses anonymous Privacy Pass authentication, and hides the queried number with private information retrieval (Apple Live Caller ID Lookup privacy documentation). Availability and exact behavior depend on the iOS version, carrier, region, and enabled extensions.

Neither column represents every carrier or country. Carrier firmware, regional regulations, and third-party apps can change the result.

Yes. Caller ID can be spoofed, and a label supplied by a contact database does not prove the caller’s identity. A scammer may imitate a relative’s number, a bank, a government office, or a local business.

Android 11 and later supports STIR/SHAKEN, a carrier-verification framework that supplies a status to caller-ID and spam apps (Android caller-ID spoofing protections). Verification is a signal, not a guarantee: a verified number can still be used by a compromised account or an impersonator.
Safe response to an unexpected request
- Do not provide a password, one-time code, payment, gift-card number, or remote-access approval during the call.
- Hang up if the request is urgent, secret, or financially consequential.
- Call back using a number already stored in your contacts, a card, a statement, or the organization’s official site—not a number dictated by the caller.
- For a family member, use a second channel you already trust, such as an existing message thread.
- Report the call through your carrier or phone app if it was fraudulent.
How to stop or limit caller-ID data sharing
Google Phone app
- Open Phone.
- Tap More (three dots) > Settings.
- Open Caller ID & spam.
- Turn off See caller and spam ID.
The wording can vary by Android version and region. Turning it off also removes the feature’s spam warnings.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Phone (or Settings > Phone on older iOS versions).
- Review Call Blocking & Identification and disable caller-ID apps you do not want handling calls.
- Review Contacts > Accounts and remove contact access for accounts or apps that should not sync.
- For a shared name or photo, open Contacts > My Card > Edit and review Name & Photo Sharing options.
Menu labels vary with iOS release and country. Disabling an app does not erase labels already stored in that app’s database; consult its own account and deletion controls if you want that data removed.
General privacy checks
- Install caller-ID apps only from a trusted store and read their contact, phone, and call-log permissions.
- Grant Contacts permission only to apps that need local matching.
- Prefer on-device spam filtering when available, understanding that it may identify fewer unknown businesses.
- Keep the operating system and carrier settings current so verification and privacy fixes are applied.
How to hear caller names aloud
On supported Samsung Galaxy phones, open Phone > Settings > Answering and ending calls > Read caller names aloud. Choose Over Bluetooth and headphones only or Always (Samsung support instructions).
Other manufacturers may place the option under Accessibility, call settings, or text-to-speech, and some do not offer it. Spoken output uses the same name resolution as the on-screen caller ID, so an unknown or incorrectly matched number will be read as a number or an incorrect label.

- Identify the source: compare the displayed label with your local contact record; if it is absent there, suspect a carrier directory or app.

- Check line status: on dual-SIM, note which subscription received the call and whether the other line was roaming or using data.

- Escalate to the carrier: if calls or caller names fail only while roaming, ask about Wi-Fi Calling, data switching, directory availability, and billing.
