To import work into an Asana project, prepare a CSV with a header row and one task per row, upload it through the project’s CSV import flow, and inspect the field mappings before finishing. The project importer adds tasks; it does not update existing tasks, so importing a file again can create duplicates.
Prepare your CSV for Asana
Each row should represent one task, with the first row naming the columns. Use a task-name column that Asana recognizes; for the most reliable task-name mapping, put Name in that column’s header. Other columns can represent task details or custom fields. Asana’s advanced CSV import options and CSV preparation guide describe supported fields and formatting.
Include only the fields you need. Common task fields include Description, Section, Assignee, Collaborators, Start Date, Due Date, Type, Dependents, and Parent Task. Check these values before uploading:

- Assignee: Use the email address of an Asana user in the relevant workspace or organization.
- Collaborators: Separate valid user email addresses with commas and no spaces.
- Due dates: Use month/day/year format as specified in Asana’s preparation guide.
- Dropdown custom fields: Match each value to an available option, including its spelling and punctuation.
- Multi-select custom fields: For project imports, separate selected options with commas so Asana does not interpret the cell as one text block.
Incorrectly formatted values may be interpreted as a different kind of data or may fail to map as intended.

Import the file into a project
Asana documents several ways to start a project CSV import: from project creation, Quick Add, or the menu of an existing project. Its overview also describes the path Create → Project → Import spreadsheet. Exact labels can change as Asana updates its interface.
- Open the project you want to populate, or start the project-creation flow if you are creating a new project.
- Choose the CSV or spreadsheet import option and upload your prepared file.
- At the preview, select Make changes to review the column-to-field mappings.
- Correct mappings, ignore columns you do not want to import, and adjust a custom-field type if needed.
- Continue through the importer to complete the import, then inspect the project for missing or mis-mapped values.
Asana’s guide to importing data covers spreadsheet migrations and the project import flow. The task Name mapping is not editable in the preview: if the importer has selected the wrong task-name column, set that column’s first-row header to Name before uploading.

What happens to custom fields and task relationships?
Additional CSV columns can become custom fields. For project imports, imported custom fields are local to that project by default. Asana says custom fields are available with a paid subscription; if a field needs to support organization-wide reporting or later imports, convert it to a global field where appropriate.
- Existing dropdown fields: CSV values must match the field’s available options exactly enough for Asana to recognize them. A spelling or punctuation mismatch can prevent a selection from importing.
- Start Date: Asana’s preparation guidance says this field is available with a paid subscription; without one, the date appears in the task description.
- Parent Task: A Parent Task column can connect subtasks, but list each parent row before its subtasks. If task names repeat, Asana uses the closest matching row above.
- Dependents: The advanced guide says CSV import cannot create a dependency on a task that already exists in the project.
These behaviors and plan details are described in Asana’s advanced import options and preparation guidance.

Importing into an existing project does not update its tasks
Asana’s project CSV importer adds tasks; it does not update existing tasks. Treat a re-import as a potential source of duplicate tasks, not as a bulk-edit or synchronization method. Review the destination project after importing and resolve duplicates before relying on the result.
Move a spreadsheet or another work tool into Asana
If your source already has rows and columns, export the relevant view or project to CSV and use the project importer. Some services first export to another spreadsheet format, which you may need to save as CSV. Export steps and availability can depend on the source tool and its plan.

Asana’s migration guide gives examples involving monday.com, Trello, Airtable, Smartsheet, Wrike, Google Sheets, and ClickUp. For tool-specific columns, use custom fields where suitable, then verify their types and option values in the preview. A column-based CSV is the conventional route when you need to inspect and control task-field mapping.
Choose the right Asana import workflow
| What you want to import | Use this workflow | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Rows of project work from a CSV | Project CSV import | Adds tasks; does not update existing tasks. |
| Member records | CSV user import | Asana documents this separately for admins and super admins on Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise+ plans. It can add or update member information and does not process guest-user information. See Asana’s CSV user import guidance. |
| A mixed-format file or a project preview created from a file | Smart Import | A separate feature that accepts formats including CSV, PDF, DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, TXT, JPEG, and PNG. It creates a project preview; its flow is distinct from conventional CSV field mapping. See Asana’s Smart Import guidance. |
Use the project CSV route when the goal is to add task rows and review their column mappings. Do not follow member-import instructions for project tasks, and do not assume Smart Import offers the same mapping controls as the conventional importer.
