The Imperial Woodpecker (Campephilus imperialis), Mexico’s largest woodpecker, has been recreated as an animated 3D digital specimen. Researchers led by Joshua Medina built the model from a museum specimen, historical film and comparative anatomy. It is a freely downloadable scientific reconstruction—not evidence that the species has returned to the wild.

What the project created

The peer-reviewed study, published on 25 September 2026 in the open-access journal Natural History Collections and Museomics, presents three connected resources: an animated 3D Imperial Woodpecker, a digital skeleton and animations showing movements such as climbing, launching, flying and foraging. The publisher says the files are available to view and download through Sketchfab.

The work is a digital-specimen project rather than a de-extinction experiment. No living Imperial Woodpecker population has been verified. The species is generally treated as probably extinct, with no confirmed record in the wild since 1956.

How researchers reconstructed the bird

A museum specimen supplied the geometry

The team began with a female taxidermied specimen, catalogued as MLZ:Bird 20609, in Occidental College’s Moore Laboratory of Zoology. They photographed it 288 times from different angles. Photogrammetry software then combined those images into a three-dimensional surface with sub-millimetre geometric accuracy.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Researchers also measured the head, bill, body, wings and tail. Those measurements constrain the model’s proportions and make the result more than an artistic illustration: its overall shape is tied to a documented specimen.

Historical evidence supplied behavior

William L. Rhein’s surviving 16-mm film from 1956 is the only known moving-image record of a living Imperial Woodpecker. It shows a female climbing, launching, flying and foraging. A 2011 analysis placed the filming site in Mexican conifer forest at 2,700–2,900 metres elevation.

The film helped the animators choose plausible poses and sequences, but it does not provide measurements for every joint or a complete record of flight mechanics. The animations should therefore be read as informed visualizations of documented behavior, not frame-by-frame reconstruction of the filmed bird.

Feathers required comparative reconstruction

Feathers were the most difficult part to rebuild. Individual feather forms were modelled from the living Pileated Woodpecker, then resized and adjusted to match known Imperial Woodpecker proportions. This approach supplies a defensible starting point for feather structure while acknowledging that the exact appearance of every feather in the extinct species cannot be observed directly.

How scientifically accurate is the model?

Accuracy depends on which part of the digital bird is being considered. The authors explicitly describe the result as a documented reconstruction with inferred elements. It is based on one female specimen; soft tissue, feather details and flight kinematics rely on informed estimates from living relatives.

Model element Evidence used What that means
Body proportions and external pose 288 photographs and direct measurements of MLZ:Bird 20609 Strongly constrained by a real museum specimen, with the normal limitations of a taxidermied mount.
Skeleton Digital modelling informed by available anatomical evidence, including a documented museum skeleton Useful for study and education; it should not be treated as a complete census of all surviving specimens.
Feathers Pileated Woodpecker feather shapes resized to Imperial Woodpecker proportions Comparative reconstruction rather than a scan of a living Imperial Woodpecker.
Soft tissue Inference from the specimen and related woodpeckers Estimated anatomy; the sources do not establish every muscle, fat layer or skin contour directly.
Movement and flight Rhein’s 1956 film plus behavior of living relatives Illustrative, evidence-based animation rather than measured biomechanical data for the extinct bird.

The study’s transparency about those boundaries is important. A highly detailed mesh can look exact even when some of its details are reconstructed. In this case, the strongest claims concern the specimen’s measured form; claims about feather microstructure, soft tissue and flight should remain qualified.

What happened to Mexico’s largest woodpecker?

The Imperial Woodpecker once lived in high-elevation Mexican conifer forests. Rhein’s film documents the species in 1956, but by 2010 the filming area had been logged repeatedly. Historical analysis identifies hunting and habitat loss as likely major drivers of the bird’s disappearance.

The film shows behavior that is now impossible to observe in the wild: a female moving up a trunk, taking flight and searching for food. Its value is therefore both scientific and historical. It preserves behavioral evidence that a specimen alone cannot provide.

A related 2021 study also documented an overlooked Imperial Woodpecker skeleton at the Natural History Museum in Tring. That find illustrates how little physical material exists for the species and why each catalogued specimen can materially improve anatomical research. No reliable current population estimate or definitive total count of museum specimens has been established in the available sources.

Can you view or download the model?

Yes. The 3D bird, skeleton and animations are distributed through Sketchfab, where they can be viewed online and downloaded. The Moore Laboratory project page states that downloads are freely available for creative and nonprofit use.

Before reusing a file, check the licence and attribution information attached to the specific Sketchfab record. “Free for creative and nonprofit use” does not automatically mean unrestricted commercial redistribution, removal of credits or publication without the original project’s attribution requirements.

Practical uses

  • Education: rotate the model to explain woodpecker anatomy, sexual dimorphism limits and the difference between a specimen and a living observation.
  • Museum and classroom visualization: use the skeleton and animations to connect preserved anatomy with the movements recorded in Rhein’s film.
  • Nonprofit creative work: incorporate the downloadable assets where the project’s licence permits, retaining required credits.
  • Research communication: cite the 2026 digital-specimen study and identify which features are measured and which are inferred.

Why this digital specimen matters

The project makes scarce evidence accessible without pretending that uncertainty has disappeared. A physical museum mount can be difficult to inspect from every angle; a digital model can be shared, measured and placed beside a skeleton or animation. It also preserves a visual record of an extinct bird for audiences who may never see the original specimen.

Its larger lesson is methodological. Future reconstructions of extinct birds should be judged by the number and sex of source specimens, whether anatomy was directly scanned or inferred, how historical film was used, how uncertainty is disclosed, whether files are openly reusable and whether motion is biomechanically measured or primarily illustrative. On those criteria, the Imperial Woodpecker project is valuable precisely because it distinguishes documented geometry from informed reconstruction.
