To hold a moment in an iMovie video, add a freeze frame at the point you want it to stop, then adjust the still segment’s duration. On Mac, use Modify > Add Freeze Frame; on iPhone and iPad, select the clip and use Speed > Freeze. The Mac also has a separate Flash and Freeze Frame effect that adds a white flash and zoom-out.
What a freeze frame does—and what it does not do
A freeze frame holds one video image on screen while the project timeline continues. It is useful for giving viewers time to inspect a detail or consider an important moment. Apple Education Community describes it as a way to pause “at an important moment or at a point that requires contemplation.”
A freeze frame is not the same as a keyframe. A freeze frame holds an image; keyframes typically control changes over time, such as an animated adjustment. If you are trying to animate an effect rather than stop the picture, adding a freeze frame is not the right operation.
The freeze portion is silent: Apple’s Mac guide states, “The freeze-frame portion of the clip contains no audio.” Plan for that gap if your edit needs continuous sound.

Add a plain freeze frame on Mac
These menu directions are for iMovie for Mac 10.4.4, the version covered by Apple’s guide. Interface details may differ in other releases.
- Open the project and move the playhead to the frame you want to hold.
- Choose Modify > Add Freeze Frame.
- iMovie inserts a still segment at that point in the clip. Its default duration is three seconds.
Change the hold duration
Select the freeze-frame segment and either enter a duration or drag one of its edges in the timeline. Use a longer hold when the viewer needs time to read or inspect the image; shorten it when the pause is only a brief beat.

Remove the freeze
Place the playhead in the freeze-frame portion and choose Modify > Remove Freeze Frame. The original clip length is restored.

- Scrub through the project to the frame you want to hold, then select the clip.
- Tap Speed, then tap Freeze.
- Adjust the yellow range handles to set how long the frozen section lasts.
To remove the frozen range, tap Freeze again. The frozen segment has no audio. These steps are described in a page labeled as Apple Support, but the available copy was served through a proxy host, so its original Apple URL could not be confirmed.

Add a freeze frame on iPad
- Move the playhead to the chosen frame and select the clip.
- Tap Speed, then tap Freeze.
Apple Education Community confirms this insertion workflow. Its instructions do not establish a default duration or removal procedure for iPad, so do not assume the Mac’s three-second default or menu commands apply. Use the controls shown in your iPad version of iMovie to adjust or remove the segment.

For a more dramatic stop, position the playhead in the clip and choose Modify > Flash and Freeze Frame. Unlike a plain freeze, this treatment fades to white, fades into a frozen image, applies a Ken Burns zoom-out, and then continues playback. You can modify the Ken Burns effect afterward.

Choose this effect when the flash and camera movement are part of the intended style. For a simple still hold without that transition, use Add Freeze Frame.

Common points of confusion
- The picture freezes but the sound changes: The freeze segment contains no audio, so a silence in that portion is expected.
- You want a still without a flash: Choose the plain freeze command rather than Flash and Freeze Frame.
- You are looking for “key frames” on iPhone: First decide whether you need a still hold or animation controls. A freeze frame stops on one image; keyframing is a different kind of editing.
- Your controls do not match these steps: The Mac directions are documented for iMovie 10.4.4, and app interfaces can change between versions.
