Immich is the better general-purpose choice if you want automatic phone backup, multi-user sharing, external-library support, broad hardware portability, and deep search. ZimaOS Photos is the better fit when your photos already live in folders on a ZimaOS NAS and you want those folders indexed in place through an integrated interface.

The trade-off is operational: Immich gives you a richer, more portable application but asks you to maintain an application, database, machine-learning services, and backups. ZimaOS Photos removes much of that stack complexity, but it requires ZimaOS and keeps your workflow tied to that platform.

What Immich and ZimaOS Photos actually are

Immich: an application-first photo platform

Immich is an open-source photo and video manager released under the AGPL v3 license. It is under active development, and its own comparison material warns users to expect bugs and changes. That matters when you are deciding whether to make it the front end for a large, long-lived archive: you gain features quickly, but updates need normal self-hosting discipline.

ZimaOS Photos: an integrated view of NAS folders

ZimaOS Photos is the photo experience built into ZimaOS. Its defining workflow is folder indexing: you select sources on the NAS, and Photos presents the contents without moving or copying the original files. The interface includes a photo wall, timeline, map, collections, and local AI-search views.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

ZimaOS is positioned as a focused, simplified open NAS operating system for x86-64 hardware, with an app store and support for third-party Docker applications. Photos benefits from that integration because storage and photo browsing are presented together. The cost is platform dependence: Photos requires ZimaOS rather than running as a portable photo application on any compatible server.

Which platform gives you more flexibility?

Choose Immich for host portability

Immich is documented for Linux or Unix-like 64-bit hosts and supports both amd64 and arm64. That lets you choose among a wider range of servers, virtual machines, and NAS arrangements, provided the host meets the resource requirements and can run the application stack.

This portability is useful if you already have a Linux server, want to migrate between machines, or expect to change hardware later. It also separates the photo application from the NAS operating system: your storage platform and your photo interface do not have to come from the same vendor.

Choose ZimaOS Photos for an integrated ZimaOS NAS

ZimaOS Photos is appropriate when your storage plan already centers on ZimaOS. The NAS supplies the folder structure, storage management, and application environment, while Photos adds a visual index on top. You do not need to design a separate container mount for every source folder in the basic indexing workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That convenience is also a lock-in consideration. Moving away from ZimaOS later means preserving the original folders and then choosing another application that can read them. The files remain yours, but the integrated management experience does not travel with them.

Can each product use existing folders without moving them?

ZimaOS Photos indexes folders in place

ZimaOS Photos is explicitly designed for this case. In its folder-indexing workflow, you select a source folder and Photos indexes the contents where they already reside. The originals are not moved or copied. This is useful when your archive already has a carefully maintained year, event, or client-folder structure and you do not want a second managed upload tree.

The resulting index is exposed through the photo wall, timeline, map, and collection views. Because the source remains the authoritative location, include those folders in your normal NAS backup plan; an index is not an additional copy of the originals.

Immich uses external libraries through a container mount

Immich can also display an existing archive through external libraries, but the setup is more deliberate. You mount the source directory into the Immich container, configure it as an external library, and run a scan. The container must be able to read the path, and the mount must remain available whenever Immich performs scans or serves the files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction is important for NAS users. An external library lets Immich work with a folder tree you already own, but it does not remove the need to understand container paths, permissions, and persistent mounts. If the mount disappears, the library can appear incomplete even though the originals are still present on the NAS.

Which is better for automatic phone backup?

Immich is built around camera-roll backup

Immich has a dedicated mobile application and documents mobile backup, including automatic backup when the app is opened. The repository feature matrix also lists mobile and web upload. This makes it the closer match to a self-hosted Google Photos-style workflow: install the app, authenticate a user, and let new camera photos flow to your server.

Before relying on it, decide where uploads will land, whether the phone should back up over cellular data, and how you will verify that a completed upload exists on the server. Automatic upload is a convenience feature, not proof that your archive is protected against disk failure.

ZimaOS Photos is stronger when the phone is not the source of truth

The documented ZimaOS Photos workflow emphasizes indexing selected NAS folders rather than managing a comparable mobile-upload pipeline. It is therefore a better fit when phones already synchronize elsewhere, when you manually copy files to the NAS, or when your primary concern is browsing an established folder archive.

If automatic camera backup is a deciding requirement, Immich has the clearer documented advantage.

Sharing, users, and access controls

Immich offers a broader sharing model

Immich documents multiple users, public links, partner sharing, shared albums, and read-only galleries. It also provides OAuth support and API keys, which can fit a household or small-team setup where different people need their own accounts and selected ways to share media.

Public links and partner sharing should be treated as access features with security consequences. Use strong account credentials, limit who receives links, and include the database and configuration in your recovery plan. A shared link is not a substitute for a second copy of the files.

ZimaOS Photos centers on the NAS viewing experience

ZimaOS Photos documents photo-wall, timeline, map, collections, and local AI-search views. The available comparison does not establish an equivalent set of public-link, partner-sharing, or multi-user photo features. If several people need independent accounts, selective sharing, or controlled external access, confirm the current ZimaOS capabilities before choosing it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search, AI, and ways to find older photos

Immich has the deeper discovery toolkit

Immich supports search by metadata, objects, faces, and CLIP-based semantic understanding. Its feature set includes facial recognition and clustering, map views, stacked photos, and folder views. In practice, that gives you several routes to the same memory: a date or camera field, a location, a recognized person, an object, or a natural-language-style semantic query supported by its search implementation.

These capabilities require processing. Machine-learning analysis, thumbnail creation, and video transcoding consume CPU, RAM, and storage, especially during the first import or after adding a large external library. Plan for an initial indexing period rather than expecting every search category to be available immediately.

ZimaOS Photos keeps AI search local to its integrated interface

ZimaOS Photos provides local AI search alongside the photo wall, timeline, map, and collections. This is attractive if you want discovery features without assembling a separate photo stack on your NAS. The documented feature descriptions do not specify the same object, face, and CLIP matrix as Immich, so do not assume identical search breadth from the label “AI search.”

How much hardware does Immich need?

Official baseline and recommendation

  • Minimum: 6 GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores.
  • Recommended: 8 GB of RAM and 4 CPU cores.
  • Architectures: amd64 and arm64.
  • Storage overhead: thumbnail generation and transcoded video increase library size by 10–20% on average.

Those figures describe Immich itself, not every service on your machine. A NAS running file sharing, Docker applications, databases, and other workloads needs headroom beyond the stated minimum. The recommended configuration is a more sensible starting point for a household library that will run machine-learning jobs and video processing.

What the storage overhead means

Keep room for generated thumbnails and video transcodes in addition to the originals. The 10–20% figure is an average, not a guarantee for every media mix. A library with many videos, RAW files, or multiple generated derivatives can behave differently, so monitor actual disk use after the first import and leave free space for future uploads.

ZimaOS Photos hardware considerations

ZimaOS Photos does not state a separate RAM and CPU requirement in the available product information. The practical requirement is a supported ZimaOS host: ZimaOS is documented as an x86-64 NAS platform. If you plan heavy indexing or local AI work, size the NAS for those workloads and for all other services sharing the machine, but do not treat an unstated number as an official minimum.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which one is easier to maintain?

Immich requires application operations

With Immich, you are operating more than a web page. You need to keep the application components, database, machine-learning workloads, storage mounts, and backups healthy. Updates can bring fixes and new capabilities, but the project explicitly cautions that active development means bugs and changes are possible.

A responsible maintenance routine includes checking release notes, preserving the database before upgrades, verifying that mounted libraries remain readable, watching disk growth, and testing that a restored backup can actually be opened. Hardware transcoding and monitoring are available, but they still require configuration and observation.

ZimaOS Photos reduces stack complexity

ZimaOS Photos benefits from being part of the ZimaOS environment. Storage and photo indexing are managed through one NAS-oriented platform, which can be easier for someone who does not want to assemble and maintain a separate application stack.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display | 85W Max PD, 1 Powered USB-C 5Gbps & 2 Powered USB-A 3.0 5Gbps Data Ports, for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Dell and More (Black)
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

The simplification is not maintenance-free. You still need to update ZimaOS, protect the NAS, monitor disk health, and back up the original folders. The main difference is where the complexity sits: ZimaOS Photos hides more application plumbing, while Immich exposes more choices and responsibilities.

Backup and recovery: the part neither product solves

Immich’s official guidance is unambiguous: “Do not use it as the only way to store your photos and videos!” The same principle applies to ZimaOS Photos. A photo index, web interface, or database is not an independent backup of the original media.

Protect three different kinds of data

  • Original photos and videos: Keep at least one independent copy, preferably on separate storage or at a separate location.
  • Application database and configuration: For Immich, these preserve users, albums, metadata, and indexing state. For ZimaOS, protect the NAS configuration and any application data required to rebuild the environment.
  • Generated data: Immich thumbnails, transcoded videos, and AI indexes may consume substantial space. Decide whether to back them up or regenerate them after recovery.

Test a restore before you need it

Confirm that you can read a sample of the original files from the independent copy, restore the application database or NAS configuration, and reconnect the photo library. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a tested recovery plan.

Decision guide: pick the product that matches your workflow

Choose Immich when these requirements dominate

  • You want automatic camera-roll backup from a mobile app.
  • You need separate users, partner sharing, public links, or shared albums.
  • You want to run on a Linux or Unix-like host, including amd64 or arm64 hardware, rather than adopting a particular NAS operating system.
  • You need external libraries, API access, command-line upload, or richer automation.
  • You value explicit search across metadata, objects, faces, and CLIP-style semantic features.
  • You are prepared to maintain an application, database, machine-learning services, and backups.

Choose ZimaOS Photos when these requirements dominate

  • Your files already live on a ZimaOS NAS or you are intentionally standardizing on ZimaOS.
  • You want selected folders indexed without moving or copying originals.
  • You prefer a photo wall, timeline, map, collections, and local AI search in an integrated NAS interface.
  • You would rather avoid designing container mounts and a separate database-centered photo stack.
  • You accept that the workflow depends on ZimaOS and its supported x86-64 hardware.

Practical setup checklists

Before deploying Immich

  1. Verify that the host is a supported 64-bit Linux or Unix-like system and that it has at least 6 GB RAM and 2 CPU cores; 8 GB and 4 cores are the recommended starting point.
  2. Reserve storage for originals plus an average 10–20% allowance for thumbnails and transcoded video.
  3. Decide whether new phone uploads will be stored in Immich-managed storage or whether older folders will be exposed as external libraries.
  4. For external libraries, plan a persistent read path from the host into the Immich container before configuring the library scan.
  5. Set up database, configuration, and original-file backups before importing the full archive.
  6. After the first import, verify mobile upload, search results, video playback, and a sample restore.

Before deploying ZimaOS Photos

  1. Confirm that the NAS hardware and installation meet ZimaOS’s x86-64 platform requirements.
  2. Organize the folders you want Photos to index and decide which locations should remain outside the photo view.
  3. Select the source folders for indexing, keeping the originals in their existing locations.
  4. Check the photo wall, timeline, map, and collections to ensure the index reflects the intended folders.
  5. Test local AI search with representative files and confirm that the NAS has adequate resources for indexing.
  6. Back up the original folders and the NAS/application configuration independently of the Photos interface.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

Assuming an index is a backup

Indexing a folder in place does not create another copy. If the disk fails, both the files and the index can disappear together. Keep an independent backup of the originals.

Under-sizing the Immich host

Running at the 6 GB and 2-core minimum leaves less headroom for the operating system and other NAS services. Use the 8 GB and 4-core recommendation as the practical baseline for a growing library, then monitor actual machine-learning and transcoding behavior.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Forgetting generated storage

Immich’s originals are not the only data that consumes disk space. Thumbnails and transcoded video add 10–20% to library size on average, and machine-learning indexes add operational data. Set alerts before the volume becomes full.

Breaking an external-library mount

An Immich external library depends on a working host-to-container mount. A changed path, permission, or unavailable network share can make photos vanish from the application view while leaving the originals untouched. Treat mount paths as part of the deployment configuration and test them after reboots and updates.

Expecting identical AI features

Both products advertise AI-assisted discovery, but their documented feature sets are not identical. Immich explicitly lists object, face, metadata, and CLIP search plus facial clustering. ZimaOS Photos documents local AI search without defining the same matrix. Evaluate the searches you need instead of assuming feature-name parity.

Ignoring project maturity and change

Immich’s active development is a strength for feature growth, but the project warns that bugs and changes should be expected. Keep tested backups, read update notes, and avoid treating an untested upgrade as a routine appliance update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final recommendation

For most readers comparing the products without a pre-existing platform commitment, choose Immich. Its mobile backup, user and sharing model, external-library support, search depth, API, and amd64/arm64 portability make it the more complete self-hosted photo manager. Choose ZimaOS Photos when the decisive fact is that your originals already live on a ZimaOS NAS and you want the least-friction way to index those folders in place. In either case, keep originals and application data protected independently from the photo interface.
