Yes. When you mute an iMessage conversation with Hide Alerts, the other participant can receive a note indicating that your notifications are silenced. They do not receive a dedicated alert saying you muted them, and muting does not block, delete, or delay their messages. The thread continues receiving messages; only notifications for that conversation are suppressed.

What happens when you mute an iMessage conversation?

On iPhone, muting a conversation means enabling Hide Alerts for that specific thread. Messages still arrive normally and remain in the conversation. The change affects how your iPhone alerts you, not whether the sender can contact you.

  • You stop receiving notification banners, sounds, and lock-screen alerts for that thread while Hide Alerts is enabled.
  • The conversation remains in Messages, and new messages are available when you open it.
  • The sender is not blocked and is not told that delivery failed.
  • A Hide Alerts icon appears beside the muted conversation in your Messages list.

Apple describes this behavior in its iPhone User Guide. Its support documentation says that Hide Alerts “will only stop notifications for that conversation, not your device.”

Can the other person tell that you muted them?

Apple says that senders receive a note indicating that you have notifications silenced. That is the documented signal someone may see in the conversation. Apple does not describe it as a special “you were muted” alert, and its guide does not guarantee identical wording or placement on every iOS version, device, or messaging situation.

(The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

The note is about notification availability, not message delivery. It does not prove that you selected Hide Alerts for that particular person: the same type of status can be associated with other notification controls, especially Focus. Therefore, a sender may know that your notifications are silenced, but Apple’s documentation does not establish that they can identify the exact setting you used.

What the sender does not see

  • There is no documented pop-up naming the person who muted the chat.
  • There is no “blocked” or “undelivered” indicator caused by Hide Alerts.
  • Read receipts, typing indicators, and message delivery continue to follow their own settings; muting does not change them.

Hide Alerts, Focus Status, and app-wide notifications are different

Several iPhone controls can result in fewer visible alerts, but their scope and the information shared with other people differ. Treating them as the same can lead to incorrect conclusions about what a sender knows.

Setting Scope Do messages continue to arrive? What Apple says another person may see
Hide Alerts One conversation Yes Apple says the sender receives a note indicating that your notifications are silenced.
Focus Status sharing A Focus mode or sleep schedule, optionally controlled per one-to-one conversation Yes A status can appear in Messages saying that notifications are silenced by Focus or a sleep schedule; sharing can be turned off for an individual conversation.
Allow Notifications for Messages The Messages app on the device Yes Apple documents the device-wide setting, but does not describe it as the same per-conversation signal as Hide Alerts.

Apple explains Focus-related status separately in its guidance on Messages notifications. Focus Status is therefore not proof that a specific thread was muted. You can have Hide Alerts enabled without sharing Focus Status, share Focus Status while no individual thread is muted, or turn off Messages notifications for the entire app.

  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

How to mute one conversation

You can enable Hide Alerts from the conversation list or from inside the thread. The labels can vary slightly by iOS release, but Apple’s current instructions use the following paths.

Method 1: From the Messages list

  1. Open the Messages app.
  2. Find the conversation you want to quiet.
  3. Swipe left on the conversation.
  4. Tap Mute or the bell-shaped Hide Alerts control, depending on the label shown on your iPhone.

The thread remains in Messages, but notifications for that conversation stop. A crossed-out bell or similar Hide Alerts icon appears beside it so you can identify the setting later.

Method 2: From inside the conversation

  1. Open the conversation in Messages.
  2. Tap the person’s photo, initials, or contact icon at the top of the screen.
  3. Turn on Hide Alerts.
  4. Tap Done or return to the conversation if your iOS version saves the change immediately.

These steps mute only the selected thread. If the same person has separate one-to-one or group conversations with you, each thread has its own notification setting.

How to unmute a conversation

  1. Open Messages and select the muted thread.
  2. Tap the contact image, initials, or icon at the top.
  3. Turn Hide Alerts off.
  4. Return to the conversation list and confirm that the Hide Alerts icon is gone.

Future messages from that conversation can then produce notifications according to your normal Messages, Focus, and device settings. Messages that arrived while the thread was muted are not lost; they remain in the conversation for you to read.

How to stop sharing a Focus status with one person

If the status shown to someone is coming from Focus rather than Hide Alerts, change the sharing control inside that one-to-one conversation:

  1. Open the conversation in Messages.
  2. Tap the contact icon or name at the top.
  3. Turn off Share Focus Status.

This prevents that conversation from receiving your Focus-status indication. It does not disable the Focus mode itself and does not turn off Hide Alerts. To manage Focus more broadly, use Settings > Focus and review the active Focus, schedule, and status-sharing options.

Group chats have an important exception

Muting a group conversation normally suppresses notifications from that thread, but Apple says a mention may still notify you even when the conversation is muted, depending on your settings. A participant who types your name using the group’s mention feature can therefore trigger an alert that an ordinary message would not.

Apple documents mentions and related behavior in its group conversation guide. If a muted group continues to alert you, check whether the messages include a mention and review the notification options for that conversation.

Why you might not see a notification even when a chat is not muted

Missing an alert does not by itself show that Hide Alerts is enabled. Apple lists several other reasons a notification may not appear:

  • Messages is already open: Apple notes that the app does not necessarily display a separate notification for every new message while you are actively using it.
  • Focus or a sleep schedule is active: Focus can pause notifications and may display a Focus Status in Messages.
  • Messages notifications are disabled: Check Settings > Notifications > Messages and make sure Allow Notifications is enabled if you want device-wide alerts.
  • Apple Watch routing: Depending on whether the iPhone is locked or in use, a notification may be delivered to the Apple Watch or the iPhone rather than both.
  • Conversation-specific settings: The individual thread may have Hide Alerts enabled even when the Messages app’s general notifications are on.

For Apple’s troubleshooting guidance, see If you don’t receive Messages notifications on your iPhone or iPad. Check the conversation icon first, then Focus and app-wide notification settings, before assuming that a sender has been blocked.

Does muting stop messages or hide the conversation?

No. Hide Alerts is a notification filter, not a delivery or archive function. The sender can continue sending iMessages or text messages, and the messages appear in the thread. Opening Messages is the way to check for new content while the conversation is muted.

If you need to prevent contact rather than silence alerts, Hide Alerts is not the appropriate control. Blocking is a separate action with different consequences, and deleting a conversation removes it from your view without changing what the other person can send. Those actions should not be inferred from a Hide Alerts icon or a silenced-notifications note.

What a silenced-notifications note means in practice

The note gives a sender limited context: your device may not alert you immediately. It does not provide a response time, reveal whether you are using Hide Alerts or Focus, or indicate that you have read the message. Apple has not specified one universal visual treatment for the note in every release, so screenshots or wording seen on another iPhone may not match yours.

For privacy-sensitive conversations, remember that notification behavior is also affected by lock-screen previews, connected devices, and whether Messages is open. Muting one thread reduces interruptions; it is not a guarantee that no trace of the conversation or status will be visible to the other participant.

Quick checks if you want a conversation quiet but still accessible

  • Confirm the Hide Alerts icon is visible beside the intended thread.
  • Open the thread’s contact details and verify that Hide Alerts is on.
  • If someone reports seeing a silenced status, check Share Focus Status separately.
  • For a group, review whether mentions are generating the remaining alerts.
  • Keep Settings > Notifications > Messages > Allow Notifications enabled if other conversations should still alert you.
  • Check whether your Apple Watch is receiving notifications instead of the iPhone.

The practical answer

Muting an iMessage conversation does not secretly make the sender unaware: Apple says senders receive a note indicating that your notifications are silenced. However, the sender is not given a dedicated “you muted me” warning, and the note does not identify whether Hide Alerts, Focus, or another notification condition caused it. Your messages continue to arrive, and you can restore alerts at any time by turning off Hide Alerts in the conversation details.
