“LieMAX” is informal fan shorthand—not an official IMAX category—for an IMAX auditorium some moviegoers consider less large or immersive than traditional large-format venues. To judge a local theater, check the specific screening’s projection system, disclosed screen or auditorium details, and the film’s aspect ratio. The IMAX label alone does not tell you the screen size or image shape.
How do I tell if my local IMAX is LieMAX?
There is no universal screen-size cutoff or official IMAX test for deciding whether an auditorium is “LieMAX.” The term is often pejorative fan slang, not a manufacturer classification. Instead of treating theaters as simply “real” or “fake” IMAX, compare the actual specifications available for the theater and the showing you are considering.
- Check the film’s official IMAX release information. Look for whether the specific location is listed for an expanded-aspect-ratio presentation. Those lists are title-specific and can change; the exhibitor’s current listing is the final check. For example, IMAX’s 2025 One Battle After Another announcement identified participating 70mm Film and IMAX with Laser venues for a 1.43:1 presentation and advised viewers to check with exhibitors for current listings: IMAX’s film announcement.
- Find the projection system named for that screening. “IMAX 70mm Film” and “IMAX with Laser” refer to different projection technologies. A generic “IMAX” or “IMAX Digital” label may not provide enough detail to identify the equipment.
- Look for the image aspect ratio and screen information. A 1.43:1 presentation is a useful detail when a particular film offers an expanded image, but it is not a universal test of whether a theater is “real IMAX.” Screen shape, projection system, and the image a film presents are separate matters.
- Weigh practical details. Location, showtime, ticket availability, and seat position can matter as much as format labels. A filmmaker’s personal seat preference is not a universal seating rule.
If a theater does not publish its screen dimensions or equipment details, those specifications are not established by the IMAX label alone. Ask the exhibitor about the specific auditorium and showtime rather than inferring the answer from a nickname or a single feature.

| Label | What it describes | What it does not establish by itself |
|---|---|---|
| IMAX 70mm Film | A film projection system using IMAX 70mm film, commonly designated 15/70. | It does not alone prove that a particular screening shows a 1.43:1 image or disclose the auditorium’s size. |
| IMAX with Laser | IMAX’s digital laser projection system. In an October 2025 company announcement, IMAX described its laser system as 4K and identified 70mm film systems separately. | It does not alone specify the aspect ratio of every film presentation. |
| Digital IMAX | A broad label that can cover different presentations and equipment. Christopher Nolan told the Associated Press that digital IMAX may refer to laser projection or a retrofitted screen. | The generic label may not identify the projector, screen configuration, or image shape. |
The 15/70 description comes from IMAX’s historical annual report, which also discussed system configurations such as GT, SR, MPX, and dome. That report is useful historical context, not a current directory of theater equipment. For the company’s separate naming of 70mm film and 4K laser systems, see the IMAX and Cinemark announcement.

Why aspect ratio matters—and what 1.43:1 tells you
Aspect ratio describes the shape of the projected image; it is not a projection medium. A film may offer an expanded 1.43:1 presentation in selected theaters, but the projector label does not prove that every film shown there uses that image shape. IMAX’s 2025 announcement for One Battle After Another listed both 70mm Film and IMAX with Laser locations for the film’s expanded 1.43:1 presentation. That is a film-specific example, not a rule that every IMAX film or auditorium uses 1.43:1.
A large or tall screen does not guarantee that every movie fills it. The film’s available image and the way that showing is presented determine what appears on screen. As Nolan put it in an Associated Press interview, “But there are different shapes to the screen — what we call aspect ratios.” His explanation helps distinguish image shape from the physical screen and projector; it is not a formal IMAX classification. Read the Associated Press interview with Nolan.

What to verify before you buy a ticket
- The exact movie and showtime: Film-format availability can vary by title, location, and schedule.
- The named presentation: Check whether the listing specifies IMAX 70mm Film, IMAX with Laser, or only IMAX. If it is unclear, ask the theater.
- The aspect ratio: Look for confirmation that the particular location and showing offer an expanded 1.43:1 presentation if that is what you want. Do not assume the format label guarantees it.
- The auditorium: Use dimensions or configuration details published by the exhibitor when available. Do not invent a screen-size verdict when those details are not disclosed.
- Current exhibitor information: Check the theater’s live listing shortly before booking; schedules and technical configurations can change.
