You may not need external speakers at all. Apple’s current iMac already includes a high-fidelity six-speaker system with force-cancelling woofers, wide stereo sound, and Spatial Audio support for Dolby Atmos content. Add a separate set when you need a different layout, physical inputs, a subwoofer, more flexible switching, or sound positioned away from the display. For most buyers, the practical choice is between a compact USB-C/Bluetooth set, a larger powered monitor pair, and a subwoofer system.

This guide compares those configurations without pretending that a specification sheet proves which one sounds best. The manufacturers establish each model’s inputs, power arrangements, and published ratings; they do not establish comparative listening quality, reliability, or value against one another.

Do you need external speakers for your iMac?

The current iMac’s built-in audio is substantial enough for everyday music, video calls, streaming, games, and films. Apple lists six speakers, force-cancelling woofers, wide stereo sound, and Spatial Audio when compatible Dolby Atmos content is played. That makes external speakers an option rather than a requirement.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Separate placement: Two speakers on the desk can create a wider left-right arrangement than the display enclosure allows, or let you move sound closer to where you sit.
  • Different connections: A speaker with 3.5 mm, USB, RCA, TRS, or Bluetooth can accommodate several computers and playback devices.
  • More bass hardware: A system with a dedicated subwoofer is useful if you specifically want a separate low-frequency enclosure.
  • Physical controls: Some sets provide a local volume knob or wireless control puck instead of relying only on macOS controls.
  • A work-oriented layout: A powered pair can sit on stands or shelves with the display between them, leaving the iMac’s own speakers as a fallback output.

Older iMac generations do not all have the same ports or audio behavior. Check the model and year in Apple menu > About This Mac before buying. The connection that works on a current iMac may require an adapter, a different cable, or a powered hub on an older one.

Dedicated subwoofer and wireless control Logitech Z407 Bluetooth, micro-USB, and 3.5 mm The wired digital connector is micro-USB, not USB-C. Reserve space for the subwoofer and control puck.

These are feature-fit recommendations, not a ranking of sound quality. No independent listening test, lab measurement, current price, or stock information establishes one as the overall winner.

Creative Pebble Pro: the compact, connection-flexible choice

Creative positions the Pebble Pro for a small desktop. Its support specifications list USB-C audio and power, a second USB-C port that supplies power only, a 3.5 mm stereo auxiliary input, and Bluetooth 5.3. That combination covers a direct digital connection, an analog cable from the iMac’s headphone jack, and wireless playback from a phone or tablet.

Why it suits a crowded desk

The two small satellite speakers occupy less space than a larger monitor-style pair and do not require a separate subwoofer. You can place them on either side of the display, angle them toward your seat, and keep the iMac’s built-in system available as another output. The compact format is the reason to choose this model; the specifications do not prove that it will sound better than Apple’s internal speakers.

Power and USB details that matter

Creative lists macOS 10.12 or later and an available USB-C or USB-A port as Mac requirements. USB-C can carry both digital audio and power, but the available current affects which performance mode is possible. Creative recommends a higher-current USB-C port for the best experience and specifies separate external power for the best results with analog audio devices.

In practice, identify which port on your iMac or hub will power the speakers, whether your cable is USB-C to USB-C or needs a USB-A adapter, and whether you are using the 3.5 mm input. Do not assume that every iMac port supplies every optional power mode. If the computer port cannot provide enough current, use the power arrangement Creative specifies rather than repeatedly reconnecting the audio cable.

When to choose it

  • Choose Pebble Pro when desk space is limited.
  • Choose it when you want both Bluetooth and a wired 3.5 mm option.
  • Choose it when USB-C audio is useful but you still want a simple analog fallback.
  • Look elsewhere if you specifically want a subwoofer or several full-size analog inputs.

Edifier MR4: a powered monitor-style pair with analog inputs

MR4 is the larger, two-cabinet option. Edifier lists balanced TRS, RCA, and 3.5 mm AUX inputs. Its FAQ identifies AUX as an input for computers and other devices, so the iMac’s headphone jack is a straightforward source connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Published output and response figures

Edifier’s current US product specification lists 21 W + 21 W RMS total output and a 60 Hz–20 kHz frequency response. Those are manufacturer specifications accessed in 2026, not independent measurements. They describe the rated system, not how loud it will be in your room or how it compares subjectively with the iMac.

Placement and cabling

Plan for two larger cabinets, a cable linking the speakers, mains power, and an audio cable from the iMac or another source. Check the available width and depth of your desk before ordering; the exact dimensions and clearance you have are more important than the label monitor-style. Leave room for the rear connections and avoid pressing cabinets against a wall if that blocks the cable or power socket.

Use the 3.5 mm AUX input for a simple iMac connection, RCA when another device already uses that connector, or balanced TRS when your source and cable support it. A monitor-style design does not automatically make MR4 preferable for casual listening. Its value is the separate powered pair and input flexibility.

When to choose it

  • Choose MR4 when you want two substantial powered cabinets flanking the display.
  • Choose it when multiple analog input types matter more than Bluetooth convenience.
  • Choose it when you are comfortable routing a speaker cable and allocating more desk space.
  • Look elsewhere if you need a wireless connection or a separate subwoofer.

Logitech Z407: the subwoofer-equipped system

Z407 is the option for buyers who specifically want a desktop subwoofer and a wireless control puck. Logitech lists Bluetooth, micro-USB, and 3.5 mm input, and its Mac support information says the system can connect over AUX, USB, or Bluetooth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not confuse micro-USB with USB-C

The digital wired port is micro-USB. It is not the reversible USB-C connector found on current Macs and many phones. Check the cable included with your set and the available adapter before choosing USB. You can avoid that issue by using the 3.5 mm headphone jack or Bluetooth.

Space and control trade-offs

A subwoofer adds a third enclosure, so measure the floor or shelf area where it will sit and leave an unobstructed route for its cable. The wireless control puck gives you a physical way to change volume or switch sources without reaching behind the display, but it also occupies part of the desktop. Bluetooth removes the audio cable between the Mac and system, while AUX and USB provide wired alternatives.

When to choose it

  • Choose Z407 when a dedicated subwoofer is a priority.
  • Choose it when a wireless control puck is more useful than controls on the speaker cabinet.
  • Choose it when you need AUX, Bluetooth, and a USB option in one system.
  • Look elsewhere if your desk cannot accommodate a subwoofer or if you specifically require USB-C.

How to choose: the five decisions that affect your setup

1. Connection type

The current iMac specification includes a 3.5 mm headphone jack, making analog 3.5 mm input the simplest common route. It avoids Bluetooth pairing and does not depend on USB power negotiation. The trade-off is one cable from the Mac to the speaker system.

USB-C speakers can carry digital audio and may draw power through the same cable, but verify that the exact model supports macOS and that your iMac port or hub can provide the required power. USB implementations differ: a connector alone does not guarantee plug-and-play behavior. A system that uses micro-USB, such as Z407, requires the correct cable even though the Mac itself may have USB-C ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bluetooth keeps the desk free of an audio cable. The supplied specifications establish Bluetooth availability, not latency, codec behavior, range in your room, or microphone performance. If you edit video, play timing-sensitive games, or switch frequently between devices, test the workflow you care about rather than assuming all Bluetooth implementations behave identically.

2. Desk footprint and layout

Compact satellites are easiest to fit beside a 24-inch-class display or on a shallow desk. A powered monitor pair needs width for both cabinets and a safe path for the inter-speaker cable. A subwoofer system adds a separate enclosure that may need to sit under the desk or beside a cabinet.

Keep the left and right speakers at roughly equal distance from your listening position and at a similar height. Do not block the iMac’s vents or place a cabinet where it can be knocked into the display. If the rear panel needs access, leave enough clearance to unplug the source and power cables without moving the monitor.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

3. Whether you actually want a subwoofer

The iMac already has built-in woofers, and a two-speaker desktop set does not automatically provide more bass than the computer. Pick Z407 only when the separate subwoofer is part of your goal and you have somewhere to put it. If you want fewer boxes and simpler cable management, Pebble Pro or MR4 is a better match for that requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Controls and source switching

Consider where you want to change volume and how often you switch sources. Z407’s wireless control puck is useful when the main speakers or subwoofer are out of reach. Pebble Pro and MR4 should be evaluated according to the controls and switching method supplied with the exact package you buy; the cited specifications establish their connections, not a universal control layout. macOS volume controls remain available when the Mac is the selected output.

5. Your actual use

For calls, office audio, and occasional video, a compact set or the iMac’s own speakers may be enough. For a desk shared by a Mac and another analog device, MR4’s TRS, RCA, and AUX inputs are the relevant advantage. For music or films where you specifically want a separate low-frequency enclosure, Z407 is the feature match. None of those use cases proves a sonic winner from specifications alone.

How to connect external speakers to an iMac

3.5 mm analog connection

  1. Check that your speaker system has a 3.5 mm stereo input and that the cable reaches from the iMac’s headphone jack to the speaker input.
  2. Turn the speaker volume down, connect the cable, and power the speakers.
  3. On macOS, open Apple menu > System Settings > Sound and select the speaker system under Output. Older macOS versions use Apple menu > System Preferences > Sound > Output.
  4. Play a familiar track or system alert, then raise the speaker volume gradually. If the sound remains on the iMac, recheck the selected output and both ends of the cable.

USB or USB-C audio

  1. Read the speaker manual for the required port, operating-system support, and power arrangement. Confirm whether the USB-C connector carries audio, power, or power only.
  2. Connect the speaker to the iMac or an appropriate powered hub with the correct cable. Do not substitute a charge-only cable for a connection that requires data.
  3. Allow macOS a few seconds to register the device, then open System Settings > Sound and select it under Output.
  4. If the speaker is silent or drops out, move it to a higher-current port or use the external power method specified by the manufacturer. A second USB-C port labeled power-only cannot carry audio.

Bluetooth

  1. Put the speaker system into pairing mode using its documented control.
  2. On the iMac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth, locate the speaker, and choose Connect. Older macOS versions use System Preferences > Bluetooth.
  3. After pairing, open System Settings > Sound and confirm the speaker is selected as Output.
  4. Keep the 3.5 mm or USB cable available if you need a wired fallback or if Bluetooth timing is unsuitable for your work.

Troubleshooting common connection problems

No sound after connecting a cable

  • Confirm the speaker is powered and its volume is above zero.
  • In System Settings > Sound, select the external device rather than Internal Speakers.
  • Try a known-good 3.5 mm cable and verify that it is plugged into the speaker’s input, not an output or headphone socket.
  • Disconnect Bluetooth headphones or another recently used output that macOS may have selected.

USB audio works but the speakers shut down or reset

This usually points to the power arrangement rather than the audio selection. Check whether the model needs a higher-current USB-C port or separate external power. For Pebble Pro, Creative specifically distinguishes USB-C audio and power from the second USB-C power-only port and recommends external power for the best result with analog devices.

Bluetooth pairs but playback stays on the iMac

Pairing and output selection are separate steps. Return to Apple menu > System Settings > Sound and select the paired speaker. If it disappears, toggle Bluetooth off and on, remove the device from Bluetooth settings, and pair it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Only one speaker plays

Check the cable linking the two cabinets, the balance control in macOS Sound settings, and the source cable. A stereo 3.5 mm plug should be fully seated. If one cabinet needs its own power connection, verify that it is switched on.

There is hum or electrical noise

Use a single, secure power source where practical, keep audio cables away from power bricks, and test the system with Bluetooth to determine whether the noise is introduced by the analog path. If the noise persists with no source cable attached, follow the manufacturer’s support procedure rather than assuming the iMac is defective.

What the specifications establish—and what they do not

Apple’s iMac specification establishes the built-in six-speaker design, force-cancelling woofers, wide stereo sound, Spatial Audio support for Dolby Atmos content, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack for the current configuration. Apple’s support documentation also covers connecting external audio devices. Those facts tell you that the iMac can serve as either the main system or the source for another one.

Creative’s documentation establishes Pebble Pro’s listed ports, Bluetooth 5.3, Mac requirement of macOS 10.12 or later, and its power caveats. Edifier establishes MR4’s balanced TRS, RCA, and AUX inputs plus the 21 W + 21 W RMS and 60 Hz–20 kHz published figures. Logitech establishes Z407’s Bluetooth, micro-USB, 3.5 mm, Mac compatibility over AUX, USB, or Bluetooth, subwoofer, and wireless control puck.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those pages do not establish comparative frequency-response measurements made under the same conditions, maximum clean volume, distortion, long-term reliability, latency, codec quality, or total cost in your region. Treat manufacturer wattage and response figures as specifications for that product, not as a cross-brand laboratory ranking.

Pre-purchase checklist

  • Identify your exact iMac generation and available ports.
  • Choose 3.5 mm, USB-C, micro-USB, Bluetooth, or a combination based on how you will actually connect devices.
  • Measure space for compact satellites, two larger cabinets, or a subwoofer.
  • Confirm whether the package needs mains power, a high-current USB port, an adapter, or a separate power supply.
  • Check whether the included cable reaches and carries data as well as power when required.
  • Decide whether a dedicated subwoofer is worth the extra enclosure and cable.
  • Plan where volume and source switching will happen: macOS, speaker controls, or a wireless puck.
  • Check current regional price and availability separately; neither is established by the cited specifications.

Which setup is the sensible starting point?

Start with the iMac’s built-in speakers if they already meet your needs. Select Creative Pebble Pro when limited desk space and flexible USB-C, 3.5 mm, and Bluetooth connections matter most. Select Edifier MR4 when you have room for a powered pair and want TRS, RCA, and AUX inputs. Select Logitech Z407 when the subwoofer and wireless control puck are the reason you are shopping. Verify the exact port and power requirements before ordering, especially on an older iMac.
