Grand Theft Auto V is still a major commercial and supported game, but its popularity cannot be reduced to a reliable current player count. Take-Two reported more than 230 million units sold-in worldwide by its fiscal first quarter of 2027, and Rockstar’s update records show GTA V continuing to receive updates across five platform families. Those figures help explain its remarkable staying power—without proving how many people are playing at this moment.
How many people still play GTA 5?
There is no unified current player total in the official materials cited here. Take-Two reports cumulative units sold-in, while Rockstar documents updates and platform support; neither provides a current cross-platform concurrent or monthly active-player count. A figure from one storefront or platform, even if available, would not represent the full audience across consoles and PC.
Take-Two said that Grand Theft Auto V had “sold-in over 230 million units worldwide” by its fiscal first quarter of 2027. That is a cumulative worldwide sales-in milestone—not the number of active players, the number of people playing now, or sales during a single year. Take-Two’s fiscal 2027 first-quarter results attribute the statement to the company, not to a named executive.
Why has GTA 5 lasted so long?
A huge installed base
More than 230 million units sold-in is an exceptional measure of reach. It means the game has had an unusually large opportunity to find new players, bring people back, and sustain a community over time. Sales-in alone does not tell us how many owners still play, but it establishes the scale behind the game’s continued visibility.

GTA Online keeps the experience going
The story mode is only one part of GTA V’s long life. Take-Two continues to identify both Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online among the largest contributors to its results. The company defines recurrent consumer spending to include virtual currency, add-on content, in-game purchases, and in-game advertising. This shows that the online component remains commercially relevant; it does not quantify its current player base or prove why any individual keeps playing. Take-Two’s results statement provides the company’s business context.
It has traveled across console generations
GTA V has remained available across multiple hardware generations. Rockstar’s update notes dated October 1, 2026 identify support for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC in Enhanced and Legacy forms. Releasing and maintaining the game across these platforms has helped it remain accessible as players upgrade or choose different systems. Rockstar continues to update it
The October 2026 support record includes seasonal content and fixes, evidence that the game was still receiving official attention at that point. Continued updates can give returning players something new to do and help keep an online game active as a service. They are evidence of support, not a measurement of how many people are online.

What do the newer console versions add?
Rockstar announced technical upgrades for the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions, including graphics modes up to 4K and 60 frames per second, improved textures, HDR options, ray tracing, faster loading, immersive 3D audio, and platform-specific features. These are Rockstar’s stated features, not independent performance test results. The exact experience depends on the platform and selected graphics mode.
