In Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the fastest way to enjoy the tactical battles may be to stop treating every optional activity as mandatory. GameSpot writer Darryn Bonthuys reached that conclusion in an October 14, 2026 first-person piece: “It turns out that if you want to enjoy Fire Emblem more, you may need to play less of it.” Skipping low-value chores preserves time for the campaign’s strongest feature—the decisions made on the battlefield—without making the game unwinnable.

Why optional content can become friction

Fortune’s Weave places dungeon dives, deity favors, training, mining, odd jobs, side quests and recruitment between its main chapters. Each system can improve a campaign, but trying to complete all of them turns downtime into a checklist. The better approach is to ask whether an activity directly improves your next battles, supplies Renown or credits you currently need, or offers a reward you cannot get elsewhere.

This is not an argument for ignoring the game’s depth. It is a way to spend attention where the tactical return is highest. Bonthuys describes the result as reaching the story with less repetitive management while keeping the choices that make a strategy RPG satisfying.

Train early, then let battles do more of the work

Use the quick ranks

The writer reports that training from E-rank to C-rank is relatively quick. Those early sessions can establish a unit’s capabilities before the campaign becomes demanding.

Recognize diminishing returns

Progress slows at higher training ranks. Once a session requires substantial time for a small improvement, regular combat becomes the more efficient option: units gain experience while also developing skills and advancing the story. Repeating training after its returns fall off can make the game feel like administration rather than preparation.

Quest type or reward When it is worth doing When to skip it
Bandit or monster combat Usually worthwhile because it combines a battle with experience, loot and tactical practice. Skip only when the detour would delay a more urgent objective.
Collection or delivery errand Do it when the Renown or credits will immediately unlock something your team needs. Skip low-payoff chores when their only benefit is a small, delayed reward; the penalties are limited.
Paralogue Prioritize when you want its stronger rewards or a particular character or story. Do not assume every paralogue is required for progression; Bonthuys describes the Renown gains as generally small.

This approach keeps optional missions tied to a decision. If the reward does not solve a current problem, leaving it unfinished is a legitimate choice rather than a failure state.

Do you need to max every god’s favor?

No. Deity favors cap at level 3, but Bonthuys says a level-one buff is often enough in practice. Instead of visiting every temple each week, identify one or two gods whose effects complement your team and concentrate investment there.

Maxing every deity is impractical because it competes with training, battles and other uses of time. A focused favor plan gives you a useful benefit without turning the calendar into another completion list. Weekly temple visits are optional unless a specific favor is part of your strategy.

Build a core roster instead of recruiting everyone

Most battles field a relatively small group, so a broad roster does not automatically create a stronger army. Positioning, experience allocation and equipment matter more when you know which units you intend to use.

Recruitment also has compounding costs. Expanding the roster can require Renown, relationship levels and gifts. Those resources are easier to justify for a recruit who fills an immediate role or is available with little effort than for a character you may never deploy.

A practical recruitment rule

  • Keep a dependable core cast and learn how its strengths work together.
  • Take recruits with low requirements or an immediately useful class or ability.
  • Delay expensive relationship and gift chains unless you specifically want that character.
  • Do not grind Renown simply to make the roster complete.

Use automation to remove chores, not decisions

Fortune’s Weave lets you skip a chosen number of turns and automatically assign activities such as training, gathering or skill honing. Auto-activities provide weaker returns than active play, but they remove repetitive management. They are most useful when you have already decided what the party needs and do not want to spend another session repeating low-stakes actions.

Automation should support a focused plan: assign it to a unit or resource target you already value, then return to the story. It is not a replacement for deciding which characters, favors or quests deserve your limited attention.

Choose a difficulty and recovery method that keeps battles fun

Normal and easy modes are valid ways to experience the campaign, especially when optional grinding has started to overshadow tactical play. Lowering the difficulty can reduce the pressure to optimize every training session or recruit every possible unit.

Rewinds and battle restarts provide additional recovery. A rewind can preserve a promising attempt after a mistake, while restarting lets you replay an encounter when the outcome is too costly. Bonthuys also notes that a difficult battle can be used to harvest experience when an encounter goes badly, turning a setback into progress rather than forcing a long preparation loop.

A low-friction routine for the campaign

  1. Take the main chapter objective as your default next step.
  2. Train early, aiming for the quick E-to-C progression, then stop when higher ranks become inefficient.
  3. Accept combat-focused side quests first; take collection jobs only for an immediate Renown or credit need.
  4. Choose one or two complementary deities and treat level one as a sufficient baseline unless your strategy demands more.
  5. Spend experience and equipment on a core team before expanding the roster.
  6. Use auto-activities for gathering, training or honing when the task feels repetitive.
  7. Use normal or easy difficulty, rewinds and restarts whenever failure is costing more enjoyment than it adds challenge.

This routine preserves the campaign’s tactical decisions while cutting the errands that surround them. The game does not require a perfect schedule, a maxed pantheon or a complete collection of recruits to be beaten or enjoyed. As Bonthuys puts it, “After all, you bought the game to have fun, and there’s nothing in the rulebook that says you have to play a certain way.”
