The original orange-glass IKEA VARMBLIXT is worth considering if you want a distinctive accent lamp and a soft, warm glow. IKEA rates it at just 85 lumens, so it is better suited to mood lighting than reading, focused work, or lighting an entire room. It can sit on a table or be mounted on a wall.

IKEA describes the effect as a soft, warm glow passing through the orange glass. That is the maker’s product description; there is no independent room test here to establish measured brightness, color consistency, or how much space the glow reaches. Think of it as a decorative pool of light that can contribute to a room’s atmosphere, rather than a lamp expected to light the whole room.
Placement, construction, and care
The 12-inch (30-cm) lamp is designed for tabletop use or wall mounting. Its cord is 6 ft 7 in long, a practical detail to check against the location of the nearest outlet and, if wall-mounted, the route the cord will take. IKEA says the glass is mouth-blown by a craftsperson, so individual lamps may vary. This is a manufacturer description, not an independent assessment of glass quality. The stated care instruction is simply to clean the lamp with a duster.

Original versus smart VARMBLIXT
The newer smart/color-changing VARMBLIXT is a separate version, not a software update to the original orange-glass lamp. A May 4, 2026 TechRadar hands-on review of that newer model reports a preset color palette, an included remote, and additional color and brightness options through an app. It also reports that smart features use IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub and describes setup as fiddly. Those details and that review’s assessment apply to the newer model, not article 905.251.50.
Livingetc’s 2026 coverage likewise discusses the smart makeover; designer Sabine Marcelis told the publication, “We spent a lot of time fine-tuning the transitions between the curated colors.” Wallpaper reported at the new edition’s rollout that the original orange-glass table/wall lamp would remain in IKEA’s catalogue. That rollout report is not a guarantee of current stock in every country.

Is the original IKEA VARMBLIXT worth it?
It makes the most sense if the sculptural orange glass is the main attraction and you want low-level ambient light in a spot where a table lamp or wall-mounted feature will be visible. Its dual placement options offer flexibility, but the modest listed output limits its usefulness as functional lighting. If you need a brighter lamp for a desk, reading chair, or general room use, compare light output and intended use before choosing it.

The built-in LED is not a standard user-replaceable bulb, and IKEA’s listing gives an estimated 25,000-hour life. That figure is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a guarantee of service life or evidence that a replacement LED module is available. Consider that fixed light-source design alongside the lamp’s appearance and intended role.
