The IKEA VALEVÅG is a 9½-inch pocket-spring mattress sold in the US in medium-firm, firm, and extra-firm options. It may be a good-value choice if you prefer a responsive spring feel, but reviewer experiences differ on how firm it feels, pressure relief, motion transfer, and edge support. Whether it suits you depends on the exact firmness and your comfort needs—not the label alone.
What is the IKEA VALEVÅG mattress?
VALEVÅG is IKEA’s roll-packed pocket-spring mattress family. The US listing for the medium-firm model describes five comfort zones, pocket springs, foam and textile filling, and firmer edges. IKEA says the zones are intended to relieve pressure at the hips and shoulders and describes the mattress as suitable for all sleepers, especially side sleepers. Those are IKEA’s product claims, not independent findings that apply to every sleeper.
The US Queen listing gives dimensions of 79½ × 59⅞ inches and a thickness of 9½ inches. IKEA lists recycled polyester ticking, viscose/polyester filling, polyurethane foam, polypropylene, and steel springs among the materials. How firm does VALEVÅG feel?
IKEA offers medium-firm, firm, and extra-firm versions in the US, but the label does not guarantee a particular feel. The available independent reviews describe different impressions of the medium-firm version, based on their own reviewers and test setups.

The difference between those impressions is a reason to try the specific firmness you plan to buy, if possible. There is no directly comparable test of all three US firmness levels, so the available evidence cannot establish how the firm or extra-firm versions feel relative to one another.
What do the independent reviews say about comfort and support?
Pressure relief and sleeping position
NapLab’s tester reported poor pressure relief in its medium-firm test. Tompkins, by contrast, found that same labeled firmness comfortable for her back and side sleeping. These accounts are not necessarily contradictory: they describe different people and testing conditions. Neither establishes that VALEVÅG will relieve—or worsen—pressure for a particular sleeper.

Responsiveness and changing position
Tompkins found the mattress responsive when she changed position. That may appeal to someone who prefers a spring mattress that does not feel slow to respond, but it is one reviewer’s impression rather than a measured outcome.

Motion transfer and edges
Tompkins noticed some motion transfer and found the edge collapsed considerably when she sat on it. IKEA describes the edges as firmer, but that product claim does not resolve how stable they will feel in use. If you share the bed or often sit near the edge, assess those behaviors on the model and base you intend to use.

Setup, bed-frame fit, and care
The mattress arrives roll-packed. IKEA says it can be used immediately after unpacking, although it can take 3–4 days to regain its full shape. NapLab reported a strong initial odor in its test that dissipated within three days; that is its experience, not a guaranteed timeline for every mattress.
IKEA advises using VALEVÅG on a mattress base or a non-adjustable slatted base. Check the specific frame’s dimensions and thickness limits against the mattress’s 9½-inch thickness before buying. IKEA’s instructions say not to fold spring mattresses. The cover should not be washed; IKEA recommends a vacuum or upholstery shampoo for cleaning it. Warranty, exchange terms, and other purchase checks
The US product page displayed a 10-year limited warranty and a 90-day exchange message when reviewed. NapLab characterizes IKEA’s US mattress policy as exchange-only. Because terms can vary by location and change, confirm the current warranty, exchange conditions, and any applicable restrictions with IKEA before purchasing.

IKEA also says the mattress was tested against EN 1957 durability requirements and US flammability requirements 16 CFR 1633/1632. Those statements are IKEA’s; the underlying laboratory reports were not independently examined here. The US listing displayed a retailer-hosted rating of 4 out of 5 stars with more than 3,600 reviews when reviewed. That changing aggregate is customer feedback, not a controlled durability result.

Who should consider the VALEVÅG?
VALEVÅG is worth considering if you want a pocket-spring mattress, value a responsive feel, and can evaluate the exact firmness before committing. The evidence does not support a universal comfort verdict: one reviewer liked its cushioning and responsiveness, while another reported firmer-than-expected feel and poor pressure relief.
- Try it if you can: Test the firmness you intend to buy rather than assuming medium-firm means the same thing across brands or bodies.
- Consider your sleep position and pressure needs: The two reviewers’ contrasting comfort reports make personal fit especially important.
- Check shared-bed and edge use: One reviewer noticed motion transfer and substantial edge collapse when sitting.
- Confirm the setup: Verify frame fit, allow time for full expansion, and follow IKEA’s cleaning guidance.
- Verify local terms: Read the current warranty and exchange conditions for your market before purchase.
Overall, the VALEVÅG looks like a potentially compelling value option, but the available evidence is not enough to promise a match for every sleeper or to establish long-term durability or clinical sleep outcomes.
