IKEA’s smart-home lineup may work for you without a hub, but the DIRIGERA hub is needed for app-based control and hub-dependent features such as routines, multi-room setups, and voice control. IKEA’s official product information does not establish which five devices a writer used for eight months or whether they would buy those devices again, so this guide focuses on verified buying and setup facts instead of claiming personal testing.
What IKEA’s current smart-home lineup includes
IKEA’s US catalog lists several kinds of smart-home hardware, including bulbs, a smart plug, a temperature and humidity sensor, a remote, and the DIRIGERA hub. Examples include KAJPLATS bulbs, the GRILLPLATS smart plug, the TIMMERFLOTTE temperature/humidity sensor, and the BILRESA remote. These are US catalog examples, not a definitive list for every country or a claim that these are the five best devices.
Names, availability, and features can change by market and over time. Check your local IKEA listing for the exact model and its supported functions before buying.

Not necessarily. IKEA UK support says some products, including bulbs, remotes, and motion sensors, can pair directly without DIRIGERA. That can suit a simple setup where you want basic device control without adding a hub.

A hub-based setup adds IKEA app control and functions such as routines, multi-room setups, and voice control. The right choice depends on what you want the devices to do, not just whether the product is labelled smart.
Choose direct pairing for a simpler setup
- Consider direct pairing if your goal is basic control and the specific device supports the pairing method you intend to use.
- Check IKEA’s support instructions for your country and exact model; examples on IKEA UK support do not establish that every product or regional version pairs the same way.
Choose DIRIGERA for app and hub features
- Consider DIRIGERA if you want IKEA app control, routines, multi-room setups, or voice control.
- Check which voice assistant and device functions are supported for your specific product and region before purchasing.
How Matter fits into IKEA’s smart-home system
In its 9 July 2025 announcement, IKEA described DIRIGERA as both a Matter Bridge for IKEA products and a Matter Controller for supported Matter devices from other brands. IKEA’s US DIRIGERA listing describes the hub’s app, network, Matter, and voice-assistant roles.
IKEA’s announcement said it planned to introduce over 20 Matter-based smart products in January. That was a forward-looking announcement; it does not confirm that every announced product launched in every market or provide a complete compatibility list. The same announcement said IKEA had more than 20 new smart products in its announced range, which should not be read as a verified count of products currently available for sale.

Matter is intended to support interoperability across brands, but the label alone does not guarantee that every feature will work in every app or setup. Before buying, confirm that the exact product, feature, app, and regional version you plan to use are supported. IKEA distinguishes between bridging its products and adding supported Matter devices to a setup.
IKEA’s 11 September 2024 announcement explains that IKEA has used Zigbee since 2012 and described its DIRIGERA bridge plan. That history helps explain the hub’s bridge role, but it does not mean every older product has identical support today.
What to check before choosing a device
- Purpose: Decide whether you need lighting, switching, sensing, or another specific function.
- Hub requirements: Confirm whether the device pairs directly and whether the features you want require DIRIGERA.
- Power and installation: Check how the device is powered and what setup or mounting it requires in your home.
- Automation: Verify that the routines, alerts, or other actions you want are supported by the exact product and setup.
- Compatibility: Confirm support for your intended app, voice assistant, Matter setup, and regional model.
- Local availability: Use your country’s current IKEA catalog for model names and availability; US listings may not match your market.
Connectivity and software support
IKEA’s US support policy says basic functions, such as switching lights on and off, are designed to work without an internet connection or remote server. The statement is limited to the basic functions IKEA describes; it does not establish that app control, remote access, integrations, or every automation will work offline.

The same IKEA US policy says DIRIGERA and TRÅDFRI gateways receive software support for three years after purchase. This is IKEA’s stated policy for those gateways, not a claim about every IKEA smart-home product.
What IKEA’s Matter announcement does—and does not—establish
IKEA Range Manager David Granath said in the 9 July 2025 announcement that bringing Matter to IKEA products was intended to improve cross-brand compatibility and make smart-home technology easier to use and more accessible. That is IKEA’s stated goal, not independent evidence that every product is easy to set up, affordable, or compatible with every device.
For a purchase decision, rely on the local product listing and setup guidance for the model you plan to buy. The published announcements describe IKEA’s direction and the roles it assigns to DIRIGERA, but they are not a complete model-by-model compatibility matrix.
