The IKEA ÅBYGDA is a 16 cm foam mattress sold in firm and medium-firm versions, but the two are not identical: the cited UK firm model uses memory foam, while the cited Austrian medium-firm model uses plush polyurethane foam. Check the dimensions and care terms on your local IKEA listing before buying. This review draws on IKEA product information and customer comments, not independent testing or a hands-on sleep test.
What the ÅBYGDA mattress is
ÅBYGDA is a relatively thin, two-layer foam mattress. IKEA’s UK listing for the firm standard single gives a thickness of 16 cm and describes a memory-foam upper layer over standard polyurethane foam, with five comfort zones intended to support the hips and shoulders. The cited Austrian medium-firm model is also 16 cm thick and has five comfort zones, but uses plush polyurethane foam over standard polyurethane foam instead. Those descriptions apply to the cited variants, not necessarily every size or market.
IKEA describes the memory foam as responding to body heat and says it may feel warmer. That is a material characteristic, not a measured temperature comparison. If you prefer a quicker, less heat-responsive feel, the medium-firm listing’s plush foam construction may be a better match on paper; it is not evidence of a tested performance advantage.
Firm or medium-firm: how to choose
| Variant in cited listing | Comfort foam | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Firm, UK | Memory foam over standard polyurethane foam | Consider it if you want the firmer option and are comfortable with memory foam’s slower response and potential warmth. |
| Medium-firm, Austria | Plush polyurethane foam over standard polyurethane foam | Consider it if you want the less-firm option. The cited listing does not establish how its feel compares in a standardized test with the UK model. |
Firmness labels are not a substitute for trying a mattress if you are sensitive to pressure or support. The available product pages and customer comments do not establish a universally comfortable choice, nor do they provide independent measurements of pressure relief or support.

Check the exact size before buying
“Single” is not one universal dimension. IKEA UK’s cited firm standard single is 90×190 cm; the cited Austrian medium-firm single is 90×200 cm. Measure the bed’s usable mattress area and match the mattress, fitted sheet, protector and frame to the dimensions shown on your local product page. A 10 cm length difference can leave a sheet loose or make a mattress incompatible with a frame.
Cover, care and unboxing
The cited listings describe a removable, washable cover. Care instructions differ by product and market, so check the sewn-in label and the current listing for your exact variant. For the Austrian medium-firm listing, IKEA says to machine wash the cover at up to 60°C on a normal cycle, turn it inside out and zip it closed first, then line dry. It says not to bleach, iron or dry-clean that cover.

IKEA’s general mattress-care instructions say that most of its roll-packed mattresses can be used straight away but regain their complete shape and size after 3–4 days. The same guidance says airing and vacuuming in a well-ventilated room can help new-material odor dissipate. These are general instructions, not a promise that every odor will disappear quickly; some customer comments describe lingering smell.

Verdict: a practical choice if the spec fits you
ÅBYGDA is worth considering if you want a simple foam mattress, one of its local firmness options suits your preference, and its 16 cm profile and exact dimensions fit your bed. Its washable cover and roll-packed delivery are useful practical features. The main cautions are the difference in foam construction between the cited versions, possible warmth with memory foam, and divided anecdotal feedback. Since no independent testing is established here, use the local product details and any available trial or exchange terms to make the decision.
