No. Blocking does not make an iMessage switch into a deliverable SMS. Apple says messages from a blocked contact or number are not delivered, and the sender is not notified that they have been blocked. SMS fallback is a separate feature for when iMessage is unavailable; it does not bypass a block.
What happens when someone blocks your number?
Apple says messages from a blocked contact or phone number are not delivered. It also says the person sending the message does not know that their messages are blocked. Apple’s public guidance does not specify exactly which bubble color, button, or status appears on the sender’s device in every blocked-recipient configuration, so those interface details cannot reliably confirm a block.

Not because the recipient blocked you. SMS fallback addresses a different issue: when iMessage is unavailable, Messages can be set to try sending the message as SMS. Blocking prevents delivery from the blocked sender, so fallback does not override that rule. Apple’s message troubleshooting guidance explains SMS fallback.

What does a green bubble mean?
A green bubble means the message was sent using RCS, SMS, or MMS rather than iMessage. It can happen for reasons unrelated to blocking, such as the recipient not using an Apple device, iMessage being turned off, or iMessage being temporarily unavailable. Apple lists these possibilities in its guide to why iPhone messages are green and its overview of iMessage and message indicators.
- A green bubble does not prove that the recipient blocked you.
- A blue bubble, lack of a read receipt, or delivery status should not be treated as a conclusive block detector.
How to check your blocked contacts
The setting location depends on your iOS version. On iOS 26, Apple directs users to Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts. For iOS 18 and earlier, Apple documents blocked-contact management through settings associated with Phone, FaceTime, Messages, or Mail. Menu locations can change; Apple’s blocked communications instructions cover the version-specific paths. Apple says unblocking a contact in one of its listed apps removes the block across those apps.

When iMessage problems are not about blocking
Other issues can affect whether iMessage is available or activated. For example, Apple documents an iOS 26 dual-SIM activation issue involving an inactive SIM with the same number; its guidance recommends updating to iOS 26.1 or later or removing the inactive SIM. That is a separate activation problem, not evidence that someone blocked you. See Apple’s iMessage activation guidance for iOS 26.
