For a slow IDrive backup, first check the cause that fits your device: on Windows, inspect IDrive’s bandwidth throttle; on mobile, check the connection and whether the app can keep working in the background. Then confirm the files you intend to back up are selected and accessible. These checks can identify a restriction, but no one setting guarantees a particular speed.
Start with the platform and backup run
The documented desktop throttle instructions below apply to IDrive’s Windows online-backup application. The mobile steps apply to IDrive’s mobile app. The available guidance does not establish equivalent throttle menus for Mac desktop, so do not assume the Windows path applies there.
Note whether this is the first backup or a later run, and whether the computer is actively being used. Speed alone does not identify the bottleneck. A first upload may involve more data, while mobile backup behavior also differs by data category.
Fix a slow IDrive backup on Windows
Check bandwidth throttle and auto-pause
In IDrive for Windows, open Settings > Throttle > Bandwidth throttle. IDrive’s official Windows FAQ lists bandwidth throttle at 100% by default. When auto-pause is enabled, its documented defaults are 25% while the PC is in use and 100% while idle. These are configuration values, not measurements of transfer speed. If the setting is deliberately limiting backup bandwidth, raise or remove the limit when faster transfers matter; a lower limit can preserve bandwidth for other work. IDrive’s Windows online-backup FAQ (accessed October 7, 2026; publication date not stated) documents these controls.

Check CPU throttle only on supported Windows versions
The same FAQ documents a CPU throttle setting under Settings > Throttle > CPU throttle, with a default of 100%. IDrive limits this control to Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 or later. If your Windows version is supported and the setting is restrictive, adjust it if backup speed is more important than leaving CPU capacity available for other work. Do not look for this control on other platforms based on the Windows instructions.
Make sure the backup has access to the intended files
Open the backup selection and check that the folders you intend to protect are included, not excluded, readable, and available when the job runs. If the source is a mapped drive, confirm the required authentication is available. A backup cannot transfer files it cannot access, and an incomplete selection can make a run appear unexpectedly small or incomplete. IDrive’s Windows FAQ covers source and mapped-drive conditions.

After changing the selection or access conditions, start an immediate run with Backup Now and see whether the intended files are included. If the problem occurs only with a scheduled backup, inspect the schedule: IDrive’s Windows FAQ says you can choose a start time and selected days of the week, or set a daily schedule.
Improve mobile backup conditions
Check connection, battery, permissions, and background limits
IDrive identifies a weak internet connection as one reason a mobile backup can be slow. Check that the phone has a stable connection, sufficient battery, and the permissions IDrive needs. Also review device settings that restrict background activity or optimize battery use, and allow IDrive to continue working where those restrictions are interfering. Menu names vary by device and operating-system version, so use the relevant app and battery settings on your phone. Keep the app open for a large upload
For a large upload, connect the phone to a charger and keep IDrive open. IDrive warns that closing the app may pause an upload. This is especially relevant when the initial mobile backup contains a substantial amount of data.
Understand why mobile backup runs vary
IDrive says mobile photos, videos, and music are backed up incrementally after the initial backup. Contacts, calendar, SMS, call logs, and documents are re-uploaded on each run. As a result, later backup times can differ by the data types selected; a later run is not necessarily limited to files that changed. These behaviors are documented in IDrive’s mobile backup FAQ.

When a hardware change is not the first move
A router or wired network connection could matter if your local network is the bottleneck, but the official guidance cited here does not establish either as a general fix for slow IDrive cloud transfer. Likewise, backing up to a local drive changes the destination; it does not speed up an upload to IDrive’s cloud. Diagnose the throttle, connection, source access, and workload before buying equipment.

If the backup is still slow
- On Windows, confirm whether bandwidth throttle or auto-pause is limiting the run, and check CPU throttle only if your Windows version is supported.
- Verify selected folders, exclusions, source-drive availability, and permissions; check mapped-drive authentication when relevant.
- On mobile, check connection strength, battery, permissions, background restrictions, and whether the app remains open during a large upload.
- Compare the first run with later runs and account for the mobile data categories that are re-uploaded each time.
- If you need menu-specific desktop instructions for a non-Windows system, confirm the platform and app version; the Windows steps above are not established for Mac.
