The latest annual identity-theft-specific figure in the Federal Trade Commission’s data is 1,135,291 identity-theft reports received in 2024. That is a count of reports—not a count of unique victims or a measure of how many people in the United States experienced identity theft. The FTC’s Consumer Sentinel Data Book records reports submitted by consumers and contributing organizations, rather than results from a representative population survey. (FTC Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book 2024)

What are the latest identity theft statistics?

The FTC’s 2024 Consumer Sentinel Data Book lists 1,135,291 identity-theft reports. This is the latest annual identity-theft-specific total identified in the FTC sources cited here. It describes reports received in 2024, not verified cases or distinct people. (FTC Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book 2024)

The FTC also reported that Consumer Sentinel received about 6.5 million consumer reports in 2024, across multiple types of consumer problems. Sentinel collects unverified submissions from consumers and data contributed by government and nongovernment partners; it is not a survey designed to estimate the share of the U.S. population affected. Identity-theft reports over time

The FTC’s annual identity-theft report total rose from 1,036,855 in 2023 to 1,135,291 in 2024. These are submitted-report totals. Awareness, willingness to report, partner contributions, and data handling can affect the numbers, so the change in reports does not establish an equivalent change in the underlying incidence of identity theft. The cited sources do not provide a 2025 annual identity-theft-specific total. (FTC Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book 2024; FTC Consumer Sentinel annual report information)

How to interpret the FTC’s 2025 fraud figures

In 2026, the FTC reported approximately $16 billion in losses to all fraud in 2025 and $3.5 billion in reported imposter-scam losses in 2025. Those figures describe broad fraud and the imposter-scam category, respectively; neither is an identity-theft-specific loss total. Imposter scams involve someone falsely claiming to be a trusted person or organization, such as a business, government agency, or relative. (FTC, “FTC Data Show People Reported Losing $3.5 Billion to Imposter Scams in 2025”)

How common is identity theft?

The FTC figure shows that identity theft is a frequently reported consumer problem, but it cannot tell you the exact number of people affected. One person may submit more than one report, and many incidents may never be reported. Sentinel’s data also include reports from organizations as well as consumers. Treat the numbers as a record of reported problems and a useful signal—not as a census or a population prevalence rate.

Guard Your ID Identity Theft Protection Roller Stamp, 3-Pack for Mail
  • WHAT DOES IT COVER: Roll once over names, addresses, account numbers, barcodes, and prescription details on mail, statements, shipping labels, and boxes before recycling. The patented 0.5" masking pattern hides 3 lines of text in one pass.
  • HOW MANY USES DO YOU GET: Each pre-inked Guard Your ID Advanced Roller delivers about 1,000 impressions (roughly 100 feet of coverage), so the 3-pack gives you around 3,000. A twist-on cap keeps the ink fresh for a 2-year shelf life.
  • DOES IT WORK ON GLOSSY LABELS: Yes, on most glossy and coated surfaces, plus paper, envelopes, junk mail, and prescription labels. Give the ink 10 to 15 seconds to dry on slick surfaces; it is instant on paper. Results vary by coating.
  • IS IT REFILLABLE: No, and that is the point. The Advanced Roller is pre-inked and sealed, so there are no refill cartridges to buy, no ink bottles to handle, and nothing to dry out on the shelf. When one runs out, reach for the next roller.
  • SHREDDER OR ROLLER: No jams, no paper dust, no noise, and the page stays intact and recyclable. Covers boxes and shipping labels a shredder cannot. Faster than a redacting marker, fits in a drawer. Turquoise, Green, White: mail, office, parent.

The FTC’s 2024 summary presentation describes identity theft as 18% of reports, while the detailed annual table lists 1,135,291 identity-theft reports. The percentage is a share of reports in the FTC’s presentation, not the percentage of Americans who experienced identity theft. (FTC Consumer Sentinel Network Data Book 2024)

How can you reduce the risk?

Freeze your credit to restrict new-account access

A credit freeze is free, does not affect your credit score, and stays in place until you lift it. It limits access to your credit report, making it harder for someone to open a new credit account in your name. You generally need to contact all three nationwide credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—to place a freeze. When you apply for credit, a lender may need you to lift the freeze temporarily. The FTC says, “A credit freeze is something you can do anytime, for any reason.” (FTC, “Get a credit freeze to stop identity thieves”)

A freeze does not prevent misuse of existing bank or credit accounts. Keep reviewing statements and account activity, and check your credit reports for unfamiliar accounts or inquiries. (FTC, “What To Know About Identity Theft”)

Consider a fraud alert if you suspect misuse

A free initial fraud alert asks businesses to verify your identity before opening new credit in your name. You can contact one bureau to place the alert; it must notify the other two. Unlike a freeze, a fraud alert does not restrict access to your credit report. (FTC, “Get a credit freeze to stop identity thieves”)

Protect paper records and monitor accounts

  • Shred documents containing personal or financial information before disposal. A cross-cut paper shredder is one option, but it only addresses paper records; it does not protect against online account takeover or information exposed in a data breach. If you do not have a shredder, the FTC suggests looking for a local shred day or obscuring account numbers with a marker. (FTC, “What To Know About Identity Theft”)
  • Review bank statements, bills, and credit reports for unfamiliar charges, withdrawals, accounts, or notices. Report suspicious activity promptly to the relevant company. (FTC, “What To Know About Identity Theft”)

What should I do if someone steals my identity?

Act quickly, but tailor the steps to the type of identity theft. A compromised bank account, an unauthorized credit account, and tax identity theft can require different follow-up. The FTC’s recovery guidance recommends these core actions. (FTC, “How to recover from identity theft”)

  1. Contact the affected company. Ask its fraud department to close or freeze the account and remove unauthorized activity. Follow its instructions for disputing transactions or accounts.
  2. Secure affected logins. Change passwords and PINs for compromised accounts. If you reused a password elsewhere, change it on those accounts too.
  3. Check your credit files. Review credit reports for accounts or transactions that are not yours. Place a fraud alert, and consider freezing your credit with all three bureaus.
  4. Report the identity theft. Go to IdentityTheft.gov for a free, personalized recovery plan. The site can provide letters and forms to help with recovery.
  5. Follow the steps for the specific kind of theft. If someone used your Social Security number to file taxes, use the tax-related instructions in your IdentityTheft.gov plan. The FTC says the site can create an FTC Identity Theft Report, an IRS Identity Theft Affidavit, and a personal recovery plan. (FTC, “Did someone use your SSN to file taxes? Here’s what to do”)

Are identity-theft monitoring services necessary?

No single paid service prevents identity theft, and paid monitoring is optional. The FTC describes credit monitoring, identity monitoring, recovery services, and identity-theft insurance as offerings that may be sold directly or provided through a financial institution, employer, credit-card provider, or insurer. Some benefits may cost extra; others may already be included in an existing service. (FTC, “What To Know About Identity Theft”)

Weigh those terms and the recurring cost against free credit freezes, credit reports, and the recovery tools at IdentityTheft.gov.
