IDC Frontier said a ransomware attack disrupted parts of its IDCF Cloud service in Japan beginning October 7, 2026, affecting 495 companies and local governments that contracted for the service. The provider identified four affected zones in East Japan Region 1 and said recovery of data there was expected to depend on customer-held backups. Its latest located update, dated October 9, said response and investigation were still underway.
What happened in the IDCF Cloud attack?
IDC Frontier said unauthorized access affected some IDCF Cloud systems from around 03:40 Japan Standard Time on October 7. In its second update that day, the company identified ransomware as the cause and reported that 495 contracting companies and local governments were affected. It said it disconnected East Japan Region 1 from the network and stopped systems to prevent further harm while it investigated and worked to contain the intrusion. IDC Frontier’s October 7 incident update
The 495 figure is IDC Frontier’s count of affected IDCF Cloud customer organizations as reported on October 7; it is not a public list of customers, nor does it mean all affected organizations were public agencies. The provider’s notices do not establish the full downstream impact.

In its October 8 update, IDC Frontier named the tesla, henry, pascal, and joule zones in East Japan Region 1. It said virtual servers in those zones had stopped and could not be restarted. Customer management consoles were also kept offline while the company carried out security checks. IDC Frontier’s October 8 incident update

For other named zones and regions, IDC Frontier said it had not confirmed unauthorized access at that time. That was a time-specific status, not confirmation that those environments were definitively unaffected; checks were continuing.
Can affected data be recovered?
IDC Frontier said on October 8 that extracting or restoring customer data in the affected zones was expected to be difficult. Based on its assessment at that point, it expected restoration to rely on backups maintained by customers. This was a forecast during an active incident, not a confirmed final recovery outcome for every customer.

- No Installation Required - The Data Recovery Stick runs entirely from the USB drive with no software installation on your computer — helping prevent new data from overwriting the files you're trying to recover. This also makes it ideal for use across multiple computers or in emergency situations where installation isn't practical.
- Use the Data Recovery Stick on as many computers as often as needed — simply clear the recovered data between uses to free up storage space. Software updates keep the tool compatible with newer systems and devices, backed by 25+ years of data software expertise from Paraben Consumer Software.
What customers should check
- Identify which systems and data depended on the four named zones, and confirm their current status with IDC Frontier.
- Locate the latest usable backups and determine whether the backup copies are separate from the affected cloud environment.
- Check when each backup was made and whether it contains the data and configurations needed to resume operations.
- Restore into a clean environment and verify the restored systems before reconnecting them to production.
A backup’s existence does not by itself establish that it is complete, safe to use, or quick to restore. For important workloads, organizations should know whether recovery has been tested and whether the available copy meets operational and regulatory requirements.
What is known about customer and sector disruption?
IDC Frontier’s official updates establish the 495-customer figure and the affected cloud zones, but do not publish a complete customer list. Cybernews reported downstream disruption involving railways, police services, food logistics, travel, karaoke, and e-commerce, and summarized disclosures concerning JR East, View Card, and JR Kyushu. Those sector and organization-level claims are secondary reporting and should be distinguished from the provider’s confirmed incident details. Cybernews’ October 10 report

JPCERT/CC’s October 8 advisory described a broader wave of unauthorized-access incidents affecting Japanese organizations around September 2026, while noting that technical information was limited and fragmented. It offers context for the period, not technical analysis or attribution for the IDCF Cloud attack. JPCERT/CC advisory
What remains unknown?
- How the attackers got in: IDC Frontier’s located updates did not establish the intrusion route.
- Who was responsible: The provider did not identify an attacker or group. Calling the incident ransomware does not establish attribution.
- Whether data was stolen: The located statements do not give a final data-exposure scope. Ransomware confirmation alone is not proof that data was exfiltrated.
- Final recovery results: The October 8 assessment described recovery as difficult and dependent on customer-held backups; it did not report a universal outcome.
What response has IDC Frontier described?
IDC Frontier said it established an emergency response headquarters at 09:00 JST on October 7 and was coordinating closely with its parent company, SoftBank. Its October 9 update described customer assistance that included backup instructions, proposals for migration environments, and help operating virtual servers at customer request. The investigation and coordination with supervisory agencies and police were continuing in that update. IDC Frontier’s October 9 incident update
