IDBI Bank reported standalone profit after tax (PAT) of ₹2,205.45 crore for Q2 FY27, a 39.1% decline from ₹3,627.36 crore a year earlier. The fall is mainly a high-base effect: the prior-year quarter included a substantial exceptional gain. Recurring interest performance was stronger, with net interest income (NII) up about 28.7% and net interest margin (NIM) at 4.11%.
Gross non-performing assets (NPA) also improved sequentially, although net NPA edged up by one basis point. The quarter therefore combines better core spread income and gross asset quality with weaker reported operating profit and a major ownership change approved for Fairfax Financial Holdings.
Why did IDBI Bank’s PAT fall 39.1%?
The headline comparison uses Q2 FY27 PAT of ₹2,205.45 crore against ₹3,627.36 crore in Q2 FY26, as reported by Upstox in 2026. The earlier quarter had a large one-off exceptional gain, making its profit an unusually high base. A year-on-year fall in reported PAT therefore overstates the deterioration in the bank’s recurring banking performance.

IDBI Bank’s own adjusted comparison, reproduced by Upstox, says: “Excluding this one-off gain, YoY increase in Operating Profit and Net Profit is 59% and 14% for Q2 FY27, respectively.” That adjustment is the key to interpreting the result: statutory PAT is lower, but the comparison excluding the exceptional item points to growth in underlying profit.

Core interest income strengthened
NII, the difference between interest earned and interest paid, rose to approximately ₹4,227–₹4,228 crore, up 28.7% year on year. NIM reached 4.11%, improving by 40 basis points from a year earlier and by 50 basis points from the preceding quarter. These measures show that the bank generated a wider recurring spread from its lending and investment book.
| Measure | Q2 FY27 | Comparison | Reported by |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standalone PAT | ₹2,205.45 crore | Down 39.1% from ₹3,627.36 crore in Q2 FY26 | Upstox (2026) |
| Net interest income | About ₹4,227–₹4,228 crore | Up 28.7% year on year | NDTV Profit (2026) |
| Net interest margin | 4.11% | Up 40 basis points year on year and 50 basis points quarter on quarter | NDTV Profit (2026) |
| Operating profit | ₹2,893 crore | Down 17.9% year on year | NDTV Profit (2026) |
| Provisions | ₹8.55 crore | Comparison not stated | NDTV Profit (2026) |
Operating profit nevertheless declined to ₹2,893 crore, down 17.9% year on year. That divergence matters: stronger NII did not translate into higher reported operating profit. The published figures do not identify which other operating-income or expense lines caused the offset, so NII growth should not be treated as a complete measure of quarterly profitability. Provisions were ₹8.55 crore.

What happened to asset quality?
Gross asset quality improved sequentially. Gross NPA fell to 2.12% from 2.30% in the previous quarter, an 18-basis-point reduction. Net NPA moved in the opposite direction by a small amount, from 0.16% to 0.17%, a one-basis-point increase.

|---|---|---|---|
| Gross NPA | 2.12% | 2.30% | Improved by 18 basis points |
| Net NPA | 0.17% | 0.16% | Worsened by 1 basis point |
The combination is positive but not uniform. Gross NPA shows a meaningful sequential clean-up, while the slight net-NPA increase means the improvement should not be described as a broad-based move in every asset-quality indicator.
What is behind the Fairfax stake sale?
The Union Cabinet approved Fairfax Financial Holdings’ acquisition of a combined 60.72% stake held by the Government of India and the Life Insurance Corporation of India for ₹52,878 crore, according to Moneycontrol’s 2026 report. The transaction is an ownership change rather than an operating result, but it is important context for investors assessing IDBI Bank’s next phase.
After the transaction, the Government and LIC are expected to retain a combined 34% holding. Cabinet approval establishes the transaction decision; the figures available here do not establish a closing date or describe any subsequent completion conditions. They also do not provide a verified management guidance range for future quarters.

How should readers assess this quarter?
- Separate recurring income from the base effect. The 39.1% PAT decline compares with a prior period boosted by an exceptional gain, while the bank’s adjusted statement points to 14% net-profit growth excluding that item.
- Check spread performance. NII growth of 28.7% and a 4.11% NIM indicate stronger core interest economics.
- Do not equate NII with total operating profit. Operating profit fell 17.9%, showing that other operating lines materially affected the reported quarter.
- Read gross and net NPA together. Gross NPA improved by 18 basis points sequentially, but net NPA increased by one basis point.
- Track ownership separately from earnings. Fairfax’s approved ₹52,878 crore purchase of the Government and LIC stake may shape the bank’s strategic direction, but the available announcement does not give forward earnings guidance.
Bottom line
IDBI Bank’s Q2 FY27 headline profit is lower because Q2 FY26 contained a large exceptional gain, not because every operating indicator weakened. The stronger NII and NIM, plus the sequential gross-NPA improvement, are constructive; the fall in operating profit and slight rise in net NPA are the cautions. Fairfax’s approved majority-stake purchase adds a significant ownership transition to the bank’s financial story.
