Shadow of the Colossus: a pilgrimage of sixteen boss puzzles
Shadow of the Colossus arrived four years later as what Sony called the “spiritual successor to ICO.” Its protagonist crosses a vast, minimalist landscape to revive a mysterious girl by defeating sixteen gigantic beasts, known as colossi.
Each major encounter is a self-contained problem. You leave the temple, use your sword to locate the next colossus, travel across the terrain, study its behavior and surroundings, climb its body with a grip mechanic, and strike its weak points. The world contains plains, deserts, forests, lakes and caverns, but it deliberately avoids the usual progression systems and filler enemies found in many action games.

Which game is more atmospheric?
Choose ICO for intimacy and silence
ICO creates atmosphere through physical closeness. The castle is mostly empty, so a footstep, a distant mechanism or Yorda’s call can carry more weight than a conventional soundtrack cue. You are rarely managing a crowd of characters or a busy interface. Instead, the game gives you a large, weathered structure and asks you to notice its scale, light and sound.

The emotional effect comes from responsibility. Yorda is not a menu objective that disappears while you explore; she is present in the space and vulnerable to the shadow creatures. Pulling her across a courtyard, opening a gate for her or returning after a wrong turn makes the relationship part of the moment-to-moment play.
Choose Shadow of the Colossus for solitude and the sublime
Shadow of the Colossus replaces the castle’s enclosed tension with distance. Long rides across empty terrain give you time to read the horizon, landmarks and weather before the next encounter begins. The colossi then interrupt that quiet with movement on an enormous scale: a wall becomes a climb, a lake becomes an arena and a creature’s body becomes a route you must understand.

Its atmosphere is not simply “bigger ICO.” The loneliness is more pronounced, and the goal is morally uneasy. You are told that defeating the colossi will restore a life, yet each victory requires you to kill a unique creature. That conflict between devotion, beauty and violence is central to the tone rather than a side story.
How the gameplay loops differ
ICO‘s escort-and-puzzle rhythm
- Read the room. Look for doors, switches, movable objects, climbable surfaces and places where Yorda can interact with a seal.
- Plan a route. Many solutions involve moving Ico first, then creating a safe path for Yorda. Your position and hers both matter.
- Keep the pair together. Shadow creatures can pull Yorda toward portals, so exploration is interrupted by short defensive fights.
- Open the next section. Progress is usually a change in the castle’s layout rather than a new statistic, weapon tier or character level.
This structure makes ICO more puzzle-focused than Shadow of the Colossus in the conventional sense. Its problems are distributed through the environment, and the escort requirement changes how you approach every solution.

Shadow of the Colossus‘s hunt-and-climb rhythm
- Leave the temple. The central sanctuary is your starting point between hunts.
- Locate the target. Raise the sword to use its light as a guide, then ride across the landscape toward the indicated region.
- Study the arena. The terrain, water, ruins and the colossus’s behavior reveal how you can reach its body.
- Climb carefully. Grip is limited. Moving, hanging and waiting all consume stamina, so a direct rush often fails.
- Strike the sigils. The weak points are the objective, but reaching them is the actual puzzle.
- Return and repeat. There is no leveling system or filler combat between the sixteen encounters, a structure GameSpot highlighted in its coverage.
GameSpot characterized the game as almost as much a puzzle game as an action game. The sword, bow, horse, environment and grip mechanic are tools for solving each colossus, not a standard combat kit that grows through experience points.
Is ICO more puzzle-focused than Shadow of the Colossus?
Yes, if “puzzle-focused” means frequent environmental problems and route-finding. ICO asks you to manipulate the castle and coordinate two characters across many connected spaces. Its combat is limited and generally secondary to movement and problem solving.
Shadow of the Colossus also uses puzzles, but concentrates them into sixteen large encounters. Each colossus is effectively a boss, a platforming route and a situational riddle at once. Between those fights, the game emphasizes travel and discovery rather than a steady stream of smaller puzzles.

The distinction is useful when choosing by mood: pick ICO for a continuous puzzle journey; pick Shadow of the Colossus for a sequence of dramatic, individually designed challenges.
Combat, controls and difficulty
What combat feels like in ICO
Fights are brief interruptions to the escort. Their purpose is to protect Yorda and preserve your route, not to test a large move set or build a character. If you prefer combat to remain subordinate to exploration, that restraint is an advantage. If you want a deep action system, ICO will feel deliberately slight.
What combat feels like in Shadow of the Colossus
Every battle is a custom traversal problem. You may need to bait a movement, use a ledge, swim, ride, shoot a specific point or wait for an opening before you can climb. Once you are on a colossus, camera position and grip management become as important as your sword strikes.
The trade-off is control precision. GameSpot’s review noted that the controls are less precise than those in some action games, that the camera can become erratic while climbing, and that the original PlayStation 2 version can experience frame-rate dips during battles. Those issues are most noticeable when a climb is already demanding; they are part of the original presentation’s limitations rather than evidence that the encounters lack design.

Why ICO suits a quiet, emotional experience
ICO communicates through gesture, distance and shared movement. The bond between Ico and Yorda develops as you guide her through spaces that would be difficult to cross alone. The sparse presentation leaves room for you to infer what the characters feel, which is why the game is often remembered as tender without relying on long explanations.

Why Shadow of the Colossus feels more tragic
Shadow of the Colossus gives you a clear goal but complicates the act of achieving it. The protagonist’s devotion drives the journey, while the colossi are presented as remarkable beings rather than disposable enemies. The result is an elegiac adventure in which triumph can feel unsettling.
GameSpot reviewer Brad Shoemaker summarized the appeal as an experience “unlike any other” for players with patience and a taste for high-concept adventure. That description fits the game’s willingness to let silence, scale and moral uncertainty carry as much weight as plot exposition.
How long is each game?
A documented estimate exists for Shadow of the Colossus: GameSpot (2005) places its main story at roughly 10–12 hours. Your time can vary with how quickly you identify each solution and how often you explore the landscape, but that figure is for the main story rather than every optional activity.
No supported completion-time figure is established here for ICO, so it is better to choose it for its concentrated atmosphere and puzzle design than for a promised number of hours. Both games are compact compared with open-world adventures, but their pacing is intentionally different: ICO sustains one castle journey, while Shadow of the Colossus alternates travel with sixteen set-piece encounters.
Which should you play first?
Play ICO first when you want the smaller-scale foundation
- You want escort tension and environmental puzzles.
- You prefer enclosed, architectural spaces to long rides across empty terrain.

Play Shadow of the Colossus first when spectacle is your priority
- You want sixteen memorable boss encounters rather than a continuous chain of room-based puzzles.
- You enjoy exploration, climbing, stamina management and reading an enemy’s anatomy.
- You prefer a lonely, monumental landscape.
- You are interested in a story whose central act carries moral unease.
There is no required story order. The games share ideas and atmosphere, but Shadow of the Colossus introduces a new protagonist and a new quest rather than continuing Ico’s specific adventure.
What is the best way to play them today?
Best single-package option: the PlayStation 3 collection
Sony’s 2011 ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection placed both remastered games on one Blu-ray. The collection added full 1080p output, stereoscopic 3D, 7.1 surround sound, trophy support, behind-the-scenes video, concept videos and dynamic themes. PlayStation Blog reported an average review score of 91 from 35 reviews for the collection.
This is the most direct option if you want both games together and have compatible PlayStation 3 hardware. Because it is a physical release, treat availability as a listing-by-listing question rather than a guaranteed current stock item. Before buying, verify that the seller identifies the exact collection, the disc is included, the package condition matches the description and the game’s region is compatible with your console.

The PlayStation 4 version of Shadow of the Colossus was rebuilt from the ground up by Bluepoint Games and JAPAN Studio, with improved visual fidelity and performance. It is the documented modern presentation choice for the colossus adventure, especially if you want the landscape and creatures shown with contemporary rendering rather than the original PlayStation 2-era presentation.
What to know about ICO on current hardware
The documented sources establish the PlayStation 2 original and the PlayStation 3 collection, but do not establish a current native PlayStation 4 edition of ICO. Do not assume that owning the PS4 remake of Shadow of the Colossus also provides access to ICO. For both games in one purchase, the PS3 collection remains the clearly documented physical route, subject to hardware, region and listing checks.
Buying a used physical copy: a practical checklist
- Confirm the platform. Make sure the listing is for the PlayStation 3 collection, not a standalone game or a different regional package.
- Check condition. Ask whether the case, original disc and inserts are included, and inspect photographs for cracks, disc damage or missing materials.
- Verify the region. Confirm that the disc format is compatible with your console and that any included language or subtitle options meet your needs.

- Do not treat an old review score as a current guarantee. The reported 91 average from 35 reviews describes the 2011 collection’s reception, not today’s inventory, condition or price.

If you cannot decide, play ICO first and then Shadow of the Colossus. That order moves from intimate escort tension to monumental boss puzzles without requiring either game’s story to explain the other. If hardware access is the deciding factor, choose the PS3 collection for both documented remasters, or the PS4 remake when your priority is the modern presentation of Shadow of the Colossus.
