You can pause iCloud Photos uploads from the library status area in the Photos app, then resume by following the status message there. Apple documents a manual pause lasting one day, but the Pause control may not appear for every library status. The steps differ by iOS version; on Mac, the control is at the bottom of All Photos.
Pause iCloud Photos on iPhone or iPad
Find the library status in Photos and use the Pause control. The route depends on your iOS or iPadOS version:

- iOS 26 or later: Open Photos, tap Collections, tap the profile button, then tap Pause.
- iOS 18: Open Photos and tap the profile button, then tap Pause.
- iOS 17 or earlier: Open Photos, tap Library, choose All Photos, scroll to the bottom, then tap Pause.
Apple describes this as a one-day pause. If Pause is not shown, the library’s current status may not offer the control. See Apple’s iCloud Photos setup and use instructions.

Pause iCloud Photos on Mac
- Open Photos and select Library in the sidebar.
- Click All Photos.
- Scroll to the bottom of the library and click Pause, if it is available.
Apple documents the same one-day pause on Mac; availability depends on the library status.

Resume syncing or check why it stopped
Return to the library status area in Photos and read the message. For some automatic pauses, Apple offers Sync Now; in other cases, syncing resumes on its own after a few minutes. A manual pause is described as lasting one day, so do not assume an automatic pause follows that schedule.
To check status, use Photos > Collections and tap the profile button on iPhone or iPad. On iOS 17 or earlier, go to Photos > Library > All Photos and scroll to the bottom. On Mac, choose Photos > Library > All Photos and scroll down. Apple’s paused-sync troubleshooting guidance lists these common causes and responses:

- Low Data Mode or Low Power Mode: The status message identifies the condition; adjust the relevant mode if appropriate.
- Battery or performance optimization, poor network, or battery below 20%: Connect to power and a reliable network, or wait for conditions to improve.
- Device temperature: If the device is too warm, let it cool before expecting syncing to continue.
- Full iCloud storage: Resolve the storage constraint shown in the status message.
- Shared Photo Library owner has reached their storage limit: The owner must address the limit for syncing to proceed.
When investigating a stalled library, Apple recommends connecting the device to power and Wi-Fi and leaving it uninterrupted overnight. If it still will not sync, check that the operating system is up to date, other iCloud services work, the network is connected, and Apple System Status reports no relevant service issue. Also check supported file types and the Unable to Upload album. Apple advises against turning iCloud Photos off as routine troubleshooting.
Pause is not the same as turning off iCloud Photos
Pause is a temporary control in Photos. Turning off Sync this device on iPhone or iPad, or Sync this Mac on Mac, is a broader settings change: new uploads, edits, and deletions will no longer sync to that device. If you want local copies before turning syncing off, Apple advises downloading the originals first; optimized copies stored on the device may not be full-resolution originals. Prioritize syncing instead of pausing
On iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS version 27 or later, Apple’s setup guidance describes a separate Sync Immediately option: go to Settings > [name] > iCloud > Photos > Sync Immediately, then choose For Today. This prioritizes syncing; it is not the Pause control. Allowing Photos to use cellular data may increase data use. The option is version-dependent, so check that your installed release includes it.
