Choose iCloud if your priority is backing up and restoring your iPhone or keeping photos and files in Apple’s ecosystem. Choose Dropbox if you mainly need to share files by link, work across platforms, scan documents, or keep selected files available offline. They solve different problems, and you can use both. In particular, Dropbox camera uploads save photos and videos; they are not a substitute for iCloud’s device-backup and restore workflow.

What do you need the service to do?

Your main need Better starting point Why
Restore an iPhone with important device data, settings, and app data iCloud Apple describes iCloud Backup as a way to automatically back up important iPhone and iPad data, including apps. Apple’s iCloud overview says backups happen when the device is connected to power and Wi-Fi.
Keep photos and files within the Apple device workflow iCloud iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive are integrated with Apple devices, including the Files app on iPhone and iPad.
Share files with people on different platforms using links Dropbox Dropbox’s mobile app supports file access and sharing links, along with document scans and photo and video uploads. Dropbox’s mobile app overview
Use selected files without an internet connection Either, depending on your setup Dropbox requires you to mark files or folders for offline access in advance. For iCloud, check that the particular file is downloaded and available to the app you plan to use.
Share a storage plan with family iCloud+ Apple says an iCloud+ plan can be shared with up to five other family members while files remain private to each person. Apple’s iCloud+ plan and sharing details

Why iCloud is the better default for an iPhone backup

iCloud is the more direct choice when “back up my iPhone” means preserving important device data so you can restore a new or reset iPhone. Apple says iCloud Backup automatically backs up important iPhone and iPad data, including apps, when the device is connected to power and Wi-Fi. Apple’s iCloud page describes iCloud as also syncing photos, files, and other data across devices.

That distinction matters: syncing and backup are related but not identical jobs. iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive keep supported content available across devices; iCloud Backup is Apple’s device-backup route. Apple’s page describes iCloud Backup as the way to keep a backup current and restore a device. If your main goal is recovering the iPhone’s data and setup, Dropbox’s camera uploads do not provide the same function.

iCloud Drive is also accessible beyond an iPhone: Apple lists Files on iOS and iPadOS, Finder on Mac, File Explorer for Windows, and iCloud.com as access points. That can make iCloud useful even if you sometimes work from a Windows PC, though its strongest fit remains an Apple-centered workflow.

Where Dropbox fits better on iPhone

Dropbox is a file service with mobile tools for accessing files, sharing links, scanning documents, uploading photos and videos, and making selected content available offline. Those features make it a sensible choice when the job is moving files between platforms or sending a file to someone without relying on Apple’s device ecosystem. See Dropbox’s iPhone app overview for the features it presents.

Dropbox’s camera uploads can send iPhone photos and videos to Dropbox. You can enable camera uploads in the iOS app and choose whether to use cellular data, according to Dropbox’s camera uploads help page, updated September 17, 2026. Treat this as a copy of photos and videos, not as a full iPhone backup or a way to restore apps and device settings. The available information does not establish what happens to every uploaded copy under every deletion configuration, so do not assume that removing an iPhone original will—or will not—remove its Dropbox copy.

How offline files work

Dropbox files in the mobile app are not stored on the phone by default. To use a file without internet access, mark it for offline access before you lose connectivity. Dropbox says whole-folder offline access is limited to certain paid plans; the available plan details here do not name every qualifying plan. Dropbox’s offline-access instructions also note that edits made offline do not sync until the device is online again.

For iCloud, confirm the file is downloaded and that the app you need can open it offline; availability can depend on the file and app workflow. If offline access is essential, test the exact files and steps you expect to use before relying on them during travel or a network outage.

Storage and prices: compare the tier you will actually use

The figures below are reference plan prices, not a guarantee of what you will pay. Apple’s listed prices are for its US-facing page; Apple says pricing varies by country or region. Dropbox’s figures are from its investor plan summary, and the US App Store listing says subscription charges vary by plan and country. Check current local prices and billing terms before subscribing.

Privacy and sharing are feature-specific

Apple distinguishes standard iCloud data protection from Advanced Data Protection. Under standard protection, shared iCloud content is not end-to-end encrypted. With Advanced Data Protection enabled for participants, most supported sharing features can retain end-to-end encryption, but Apple lists Shared Albums, iWork collaboration, and “anyone with the link” sharing as exceptions. Read Apple’s iCloud data security overview before choosing sharing settings based on encryption.

These details do not establish a directly comparable Dropbox encryption configuration, so they are not a basis for declaring one service more secure overall. Review each service’s current security documentation and the settings for the specific files and sharing method you use.

Can you use iCloud and Dropbox together?

Yes. A practical split is to use iCloud for Apple-device backup, Photos, and files you want integrated with iPhone, while using Dropbox for files you regularly share by link, move between platforms, scan, or explicitly prepare for offline use. Keep the roles clear: Dropbox camera uploads can store photos and videos, but they do not replace iCloud Backup when you need to restore the iPhone’s broader device data.

Make the choice

  • Pick iCloud first if restoring your iPhone, syncing Apple photos and files, or sharing storage with family is the priority.
  • Pick Dropbox first if file links, cross-platform access, scanning, or selected offline files are the priority.
  • Use both if you need Apple’s device workflow and Dropbox’s file-sharing tools; decide which service owns each task so you do not mistake photo uploads for a device backup.
