Choose iCloud Drive if you mainly use Apple devices and want files available directly in the iPhone’s Files app. Choose OneDrive if Microsoft services are central to your work, or you want its documented option to pin individual files for offline use. Both offer 5 GB of free personal cloud storage, but each service shares that space with other data, so the better fit depends on your devices, storage needs, and how you share files.

How they work on an iPhone

iCloud Drive: files inside Files

iCloud Drive is integrated with Apple’s Files app. To turn it on, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud, then enable Sync this iPhone for Drive. Your Drive files are then available from Files and on other devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple documents access through Mac Finder, iCloud for Windows, and iCloud.com. Additions, renames, and deletions are reflected across devices. Apple’s iCloud Drive setup and access instructions cover supported devices and setup.

OneDrive: files in Microsoft’s app

On iPhone, OneDrive is used through Microsoft’s app rather than as an Apple Files service. The app supports uploading files, making folders, sharing, camera-roll upload, and marking files for offline access. It is a natural choice if you already work with Microsoft accounts and documents. Microsoft’s iOS OneDrive overview describes its mobile features.

How much storage do you get, and what uses it?

Both services provide a 5 GB free personal storage allowance, according to their official support pages reviewed October 9, 2026. The headline amount is only part of the comparison: neither quota is reserved solely for documents.

Apple’s iCloud storage overview explains what counts toward its quota, and its iCloud+ plan page lists current tiers and regional terms. Microsoft’s Microsoft storage FAQ and subscription comparison describe its pooled storage and plan allocations. Prices change and depend on market, so use the official page for your country before deciding.

This shared-storage model affects what happens when you run out. Apple warns that a full iCloud quota can stop backups and new iCloud Photos uploads, and can prevent Drive and other iCloud apps from staying current across devices. Before paying for more Drive space, check which iCloud features are consuming storage. With OneDrive, check Outlook attachments and Microsoft app data as well as files and photos.

Can OneDrive back up iPhone photos?

OneDrive’s Camera Upload sends items from the iPhone camera roll to OneDrive. It is an upload destination, not two-way photo-library synchronization: changes in OneDrive do not sync back as changes to the iPhone photo library. Microsoft also documents that OneDrive cannot upload photos optimized for iCloud. Upload progress can be affected by iOS background behavior, battery state, network choice, and whether OneDrive has been force-closed, so do not assume uploads will complete immediately in the background. See Microsoft’s Camera Upload guidance.

iCloud Photos is part of Apple’s broader iCloud service and uses the same iCloud storage pool as Drive and backups. Neither OneDrive Camera Upload nor iCloud Drive should be confused with a complete iPhone device backup: OneDrive’s photo upload copies camera-roll items, while iCloud storage can also hold device backups.

What works offline?

Microsoft documents an iOS workflow for marking individual OneDrive files available offline. Supported Office-file edits made offline sync after the device reconnects. Taking entire folders offline requires Premium OneDrive with a Microsoft 365 subscription, according to Microsoft’s offline files guidance.

This is a documented OneDrive feature, not proof that iCloud Drive lacks offline access. The Apple material cited here does not establish a directly comparable, step-by-step iPhone offline workflow, so compare the specific files and behavior you need rather than treating the services as identical or claiming one categorically has no offline use.

Sharing files with other people

Both services support sharing. iCloud Drive lets you share files and folders by link and choose whether recipients can view or edit. Apple also documents recovery of recently deleted Drive files within 30 days, unless they have been permanently removed from Recently Deleted. Details are in Apple’s iCloud Drive sharing and recovery guide.

OneDrive sharing is handled through Microsoft’s app. For either service, consider what accounts your collaborators use, whether recipients need view or edit access, and whether they can open the link easily on their devices. In mixed Apple-and-Microsoft groups, test the intended sharing workflow with the people who will use it before moving a shared folder.

Which should you choose?

Choose iCloud Drive if

  • Your main computer and phone are Apple devices, and you want cloud files in Files without making a separate app your primary file browser.
  • You already rely on iCloud for photos, backups, or app data and want one Apple storage pool, while keeping an eye on what is using the quota.
• Your collaborators can work with Apple’s link-sharing options.

Choose OneDrive if

  • You already use Microsoft accounts, apps, and documents across your devices.
  • You need Microsoft’s documented iPhone workflow for pinning individual files offline, or folder offline access under its stated subscription requirement.
  • You want a separate camera-roll upload destination and understand that Camera Upload is not two-way photo syncing and has an iCloud-optimized-photo limitation.

Compare both before subscribing if

  • You use a mix of Apple and non-Apple devices or share files across different ecosystems.
  • Your free space is nearly full: compare actual usage across backups, photos, email attachments, and apps, not just Drive documents.
  • You are weighing paid plans. Check the current regional price, storage allocation, whether storage is pooled or per account, and the other features bundled with the plan.
