Ice floats because freezing rearranges water molecules into a more open crystal structure, making solid water less dense than liquid water. But ice on Earth takes several forms: snow compacts into moving glaciers on land, seawater freezes into sea ice, icebergs break from land-originating ice, and fresh water freezes on lakes and rivers. Their origins determine how they move, affect sunlight, and influence sea level when they melt.

Why does ice float?

Water molecules arrange themselves in a relatively open lattice as water freezes. The resulting solid occupies more space for the same amount of water, so ice is less dense than liquid water and floats. The U.S. Geological Survey reports that water’s density decreases by about 9 percent upon freezing (USGS, “Water Density”).

This is unusual: many substances become denser when they solidify. Water’s behavior helps explain why lakes tend to freeze at the surface rather than solidifying from the bottom up. It also means a floating iceberg sits mostly below the waterline, with only a smaller portion visible above it.

How do the main forms of ice differ?

“Ice” describes solid water, but its origin and surroundings matter. Sea ice freezes directly from ocean water; glacier ice forms from snow that accumulated on land; icebergs are pieces of land-originating ice afloat in the ocean; and lake or river ice forms when fresh water freezes.

Type How it forms How it moves or behaves
Glacier ice Snow builds up on land, compresses, and recrystallizes over time. Flows downslope under gravity.
Sea ice Ocean water freezes, initially trapping concentrated brine among ice crystals. Moves with wind and currents unless fastened to a coast.
Icebergs Chunks break away from glaciers or ice shelves. Float and drift in the ocean.
Lake and river ice Fresh water freezes in place at the surface. Usually remains associated with the lake or river where it formed.

How do glaciers form?

A glacier is a perennial accumulation of crystalline ice, snow, rock, sediment and often liquid water that originates on land and moves downslope under gravity, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS, “What is a glacier?”). It develops where snow remains from one season to the next and additional snowfall continues to accumulate.

  1. Snow accumulates: Repeated snowfall builds layers on land where enough snow survives each melt season.
  2. Snow becomes firn: The weight of newer snow compresses older layers, changing them into granular, compacted snow called firn.
  3. Firn becomes glacier ice: Further compression and recrystallization reduce air spaces and form denser ice. Some air can remain trapped as bubbles.
  4. The glacier flows: Under its own weight, the ice moves outward and downward; the speed and direction depend on the glacier and its setting.

Glacier ice is also a mono-mineralic rock: a rock made of one mineral, ice, which is crystalline H₂O. Its crystals grow much larger than the hexagonal crystals in fresh snow as the snow transforms (USGS, “Is glacier ice a type of rock?”; NSIDC, “Science of Glaciers”). Glacier ice and ordinary ice are still the same substance, although differences in crystal size and trapped material can affect how they behave. Larger crystals melt more slowly per unit volume because they expose less surface area (USGS, “Glaciers: Things to Know”).

What is sea ice, and how does it form?

Sea ice is frozen seawater that forms, grows and melts in the ocean. It is not an iceberg: an iceberg breaks away from glacier ice or an ice shelf, while sea ice originates when the ocean itself freezes (NSIDC, “Science of Sea Ice”; NASA ICESat, “Introduction to Ice”).

In the early stages, tiny needle-like crystals called frazil form in cold seawater. As ice forms, most salt is excluded from the crystal structure and concentrated in pockets of brine. In calm water, crystals can join into smooth, thin nilas. In rough water, small pieces collide into rounded pancake ice and may pile up into ridges. As sea ice ages, brine drains away and its salinity falls (NSIDC, “Science of Sea Ice”).

Unlike a glacier, sea ice does not flow downhill under gravity. Wind and ocean currents move it across the surface, except where it is attached to shore. In polar regions, seasonal sea ice also interacts with ocean circulation, weather and regional climate (NASA Earth Observatory, “Sea Ice,” September 16, 2016).

Does melting ice raise sea levels?

It depends on whether the ice was grounded on land or already floating. Floating ice displaces seawater before it melts, so melting sea ice, icebergs, ice shelves and ice tongues does not add net water to sea level in the same way that melting grounded glacier ice does. When grounded ice melts or flows into the ocean, it adds water that was previously stored on land (NASA ICESat, “Introduction to Ice”; NSIDC, “What is the Cryosphere?”).

For grounded glaciers, the relevant balance is not simply whether ice melts in a given moment: sea level can rise when the amount of ice discharged or melted into the ocean exceeds the amount the glacier gains through snowfall. The key distinction is the ice’s starting position—on land or already afloat.

Why is sea ice important?

Sea ice affects how much solar energy the Earth system absorbs. Albedo is the fraction of incoming sunlight that a surface reflects. The National Snow and Ice Data Center reports reference values of 50 to 70 percent reflected by sea ice, about 6 percent by surrounding ocean, and up to 90 percent by snow-covered sea ice (NSIDC, “Quick Facts About Sea Ice”). These are broad reference figures: reflection varies with surface conditions and snow cover.

When sea ice melts, darker ocean is exposed. That water reflects less sunlight and absorbs more energy, changing the surface energy balance. This is one reason sea ice matters beyond the area it covers; it also influences polar ocean and climate systems. The extent of sea ice changes from year to year, so a general explanation of its role should not be mistaken for a current measurement or trend.
