IBM Granite Switch 4.1 is a modular language-model checkpoint built on Granite 4.1 that embeds adapters from IBM’s Granite Libraries. The 8B and 30B variants can activate capabilities such as retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), safety controls and explainability through control tokens, so one checkpoint can serve several workflows instead of requiring a separate model copy for each capability.
IBM published the Granite 4.1 family announcement on 29 April 2026. The two Granite Switch preview cards are dated 5 May 2026; IBM’s Hugging Face organization now lists both non-preview repository names as well, although a separate dated launch announcement for those checkpoints has not been established.
What Granite Switch 4.1 adds to Granite 4.1
Granite 4.1 is IBM’s dense, decoder-only model family in 3B, 8B and 30B parameter base and instruction-tuned sizes. IBM says the 8B instruction-tuned Granite 4.1 model matched or outperformed its Granite 4.0 32B mixture-of-experts model in the company’s testing. The family also lists improvements in tool calling, instruction following, coding and mathematical reasoning, with optional FP8 quantization.
Switch is the modular form of that family. Instead of loading a base model and a completely separate model for every specialized behavior, the checkpoint contains multiple adapters from the Granite Libraries collection. A control token in the prompt selects the required adapter or composition at inference time. The cards describe RAG, safety and explainability as examples, along with capabilities from the RAG, core and Guardian libraries.

The adapter mechanism changes which learned components are active; it does not mean the model dynamically downloads a new specialist for every request. Exact control-token names and composition syntax are defined by each model card and should be taken from the current repository instructions.
Granite Switch 4.1 8B versus 30B
Both documented preview variants use the same modular design, 128K-token context window, Apache 2.0 license and Transformers/vLLM backends. The principal difference is the size of the Granite 4.1 base model.

What the 8B choice means
The 8B checkpoint is the smaller deployment option. With fewer parameters, it is generally easier to fit into a constrained memory and compute budget and can offer lower latency or higher throughput when the workload does not need the larger model’s capacity. IBM has not published a universal hardware-sizing table or a claim that the 8B Switch model wins every task, so measure it against your prompts, context lengths and concurrency.
What the 30B choice means
The 30B checkpoint has a substantially larger base and therefore normally demands more memory and compute. It may be preferable when answer quality, difficult reasoning or high-complexity generation matters more than serving cost and latency. The 30B model card explicitly identifies the 12 embedded adapters and the RAG, core and Guardian library sources, while retaining the same 128K context and control-token approach.

Do not confuse the 8B comparison with a Switch benchmark
IBM’s statement that Granite 4.1 8B instruction-tuned matched or outperformed Granite 4.0 32B mixture-of-experts refers to the Granite family comparison reported by IBM Research. It is not a published head-to-head benchmark of the 8B and 30B Granite Switch checkpoints, and it does not establish a single winner for all applications.
How on-demand adapter selection works
- Load one Switch checkpoint. The base Granite 4.1 model and its embedded Granite Libraries adapters are distributed together in the Switch model.
- Send a control token with the request. The token tells the runtime which capability or adapter composition should be active. Use the token format documented in the exact repository revision you deploy.
- Run the request through a supported backend. The preview cards document Hugging Face Transformers and vLLM. IBM’s broader Granite 4.1 documentation also names SGLang and llama.cpp for the family.
- Change capability without maintaining another full checkpoint. A later request can select a different adapter, such as a safety or explainability behavior, while reusing the same underlying model installation.
This design can simplify artifact management and make capability routing explicit in application code. It does not remove the need to test interactions between adapters, validate output quality and enforce independent application-level safety controls.

Where to download or run Granite Switch 4.1
IBM identifies Hugging Face and watsonx as access channels for Granite 4.1. The official IBM Granite Hugging Face organization currently lists repositories named granite-switch-4.1-8b and granite-switch-4.1-30b, along with the preview checkpoints and Granite Libraries components.

Self-hosting through Hugging Face
- Open the IBM Granite organization on Hugging Face and select the 8B or 30B Switch repository that matches your deployment plan.
- Read the current model card for required Transformers, vLLM and adapter-activation details. Repository metadata and runtime requirements can change after the preview cards were published.
- Choose a runtime. Transformers is suitable for direct library integration; vLLM is documented for serving. The wider Granite family documentation also lists SGLang and llama.cpp, but confirm that the specific Switch repository supports the version and features you need.
- Download the model files and run a small test that exercises the control-token path before exposing an endpoint to users.
Managed access through watsonx
Organizations that prefer a managed IBM environment can check the Granite 4.1 availability in watsonx. The available controls, regions, quotas and pricing are service-specific and are not specified by the Switch preview cards.

License, hardware and runtime requirements
The preview cards specify an Apache 2.0 license. That is a permissive open-source license for the released model artifacts, subject to the license text and any notices included in the repository. Check the repository for the exact terms covering accompanying code, tokenizer files and other components rather than assuming every related asset has identical terms.
IBM publishes parameter counts and context length, but not a certified GPU, CPU or system-memory table for either Switch variant. The 30B model will generally require more memory and compute than the 8B model, and using a 128K context can increase runtime memory use as prompts grow. Plan capacity from the chosen precision, quantization, batch size, context length and concurrent requests, then verify with the model card and a representative load test.
- Use 8B when memory, latency or throughput is the primary constraint and its quality meets your evaluation criteria.
- Use 30B when the workflow can justify higher serving resources for a larger base model.
- Check quantization options: IBM documents optional FP8 quantization for the Granite 4.1 family, but confirm whether the specific Switch repository and backend support the format you intend to use.
- Pin and test versions: runtimes and repository metadata are volatile, so record the model revision and backend version used in production.
What is confirmed about release status
The Granite 4.1 family announcement is dated 29 April 2026, and both Switch preview cards are dated 5 May 2026. As of 16 October 2026, IBM’s Hugging Face organization lists the non-preview 8B and 30B Switch repository names. That listing confirms repository availability at that time, but it does not provide a separate dated announcement for when those non-preview checkpoints launched.
