I will never use a soundbar again because I prefer the flexibility of separate speakers and an AV receiver. That is a personal choice, not proof that soundbars are bad: Dolby describes them as a convenient fit for living-room and family-room home theaters. A receiver-based system makes more sense for me because I have the space and want to tailor the setup to the room.
Why I moved on from a soundbar
A soundbar keeps the system simple: fewer components and less placement work. I wanted more control over where sound comes from and how the speakers fit the room. With separate speakers, I can place each channel independently rather than rely on a single bar beneath the TV.
That flexibility comes with real costs. A receiver setup takes more space, involves more components and cables, and requires time to position and configure the speakers. For a small room or a setup where convenience matters most, a soundbar—or even the TV’s built-in speakers—may be a better fit. Dolby recognizes built-in TV speakers as an option for smaller viewing environments.
What replaces a soundbar: an AV receiver and speakers
The most direct alternative is an AV receiver connected to separate speakers. The receiver acts as the system’s hub: it takes in audio and video from sources, processes the signals, sends video to the display, and powers the speakers. Dolby’s Home Theater Setup Guide describes this as an advanced option for people who have room for the components and want to tailor sound to their space.

Before choosing a receiver, check that it has the HDMI connections your sources and display need, provides adequate power for the room and speakers, and supports the audio formats you plan to use. Dolby advises looking for up-to-date HDMI connectors and sufficient power; the right specifications depend on your actual equipment and room.
Choose a speaker layout that suits your room
5.1: a practical starting point
A 5.1 system has front left and right speakers, a center speaker, two surround speakers, and a subwoofer. It is a useful multichannel layout to consider because Dolby notes that many DVD, Blu-ray, broadcast-TV, and streaming sources are available in 5.1. The layout gives you distinct speaker positions without the additional speakers and placement demands of a larger system.

7.1: more directional effects, more speakers
A 7.1 system adds two speakers to the surround arrangement. Dolby says those additional channels can improve the directionality of effects, but its guide notes that 7.1 material is less universal than 5.1. Consider it if you have the room and value the added directional detail; it is not automatically the better choice for every space or source.

Understand channel notation before comparing systems
Numbers in a layout describe speaker roles, not a simple quality score. In Dolby’s Atmos examples, the first number counts ear-level speakers, the second indicates the subwoofer/LFE channel, and the third counts height speakers. For example, 5.1.2 denotes five ear-level speakers, one subwoofer/LFE channel, and two height speakers. A product’s marketing channel count may not describe the same arrangement, so compare the actual speaker layout rather than the number alone.

Placement is part of the system
Separate speakers only help if they can be positioned sensibly. Dolby’s Surround Sound Speaker Setup Guides recommend keeping a clear path to the speakers, aiming them toward a central listening point, and adjusting placement for the room. Furniture, walls, and available space can limit what is practical, so plan the positions before buying a full set.

How to decide whether to make the switch
- Choose a receiver and separate speakers if you have space for multiple components and want to adjust speaker placement to your room.
- Start by assessing whether a 5.1 layout fits your listening area and the sources you use; add channels only if the space and your priorities justify them.
- Check the receiver’s HDMI connections, power suitability, and format compatibility against your TV and other sources before buying.
- Keep a soundbar if ease of installation and a compact footprint matter more than the flexibility of separately placed speakers.
- Consider the TV’s built-in speakers in a small viewing environment where a surround system is not necessary.
