If you want to connect to your own Windows PC, Windows 11 includes Remote Desktop at no extra charge—but only Pro, Enterprise, and Education PCs can host incoming connections. Windows Home can connect to another supported PC, but it cannot host one. For helping someone troubleshoot, use Quick Assist instead: it is a separate, consent-based support session, not a persistent remote desktop.

Which free Windows 11 option fits your needs?

What you want to do Built-in option Important limit
Access your own PC regularly Remote Desktop The remote host must run Windows Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Home can be the connecting client, but not the host.
Help another person with a problem Quick Assist The other person starts or approves a support session; it is not intended as unattended, ongoing access.
Connect from another device Windows App or Remote Desktop Connection Client availability and steps vary by platform. Check Microsoft’s current platform-specific directions.

Microsoft documents the edition requirement and host setup in its Remote Desktop setup guidance. Its Quick Assist documentation describes the separate help-session workflow.

Set up Remote Desktop to access your own PC

Remote Desktop is the better fit when you need to reach your own computer and use it as a remote workstation. It only works if that computer is an eligible host and is configured before you connect.

Check the host edition and enable access

  1. On the PC you want to reach, open Settings > System > About and check the Windows edition. If it is Home, that PC cannot host incoming Remote Desktop connections.
  2. On a supported edition, go to Settings > System > Remote Desktop and turn on Remote Desktop.
  3. Note the PC name shown in the Remote Desktop settings. You will need it from the device you connect with.
  4. Confirm that the account you intend to use is allowed to connect. Use a strong, unique password for that account.
  5. Keep the host powered on and connected to a network. It must be reachable, and the required firewall access must be allowed.

Microsoft’s Remote Desktop instructions cover connecting from Windows, while Windows App guidance explains connection options across supported platforms.

Connect from another device

Use a Microsoft-supported client on the device you will be connecting from. A Windows Home PC can serve as that client even though it cannot accept incoming Remote Desktop connections itself. Follow the instructions for your specific device and enter the host PC name and the credentials of an allowed account.

Connecting from outside your local network

A same-network connection and a connection from elsewhere are different networking problems. Microsoft lists a VPN or port forwarding as possible ways to reach a PC from outside its network. These options require deliberate network configuration; they are not prerequisites for connecting on the same network.

Do not expose Remote Desktop broadly to the internet without understanding the security implications. Microsoft recommends using Remote Desktop on trusted networks and securing accounts with strong, unique passwords. Plan remote access around a trusted network path and limit exposure rather than treating port forwarding as a default setup step.

Use Quick Assist for a support session

Quick Assist is for a person who needs help and someone they trust who will provide it. It is not the same as leaving your PC available for you to access later.

  1. The helper opens Quick Assist from Windows search or the Start menu and signs in with a Microsoft account or Microsoft Entra ID.
  2. The helper generates a security code and shares it with the person receiving help.
  3. The person receiving help opens Quick Assist, enters the code, and approves screen sharing before the helper can see the screen.
  4. Only continue with someone you know and trust. End the session when the assistance is finished.

Quick Assist requires internet access to reach Microsoft’s required endpoints. Microsoft Learn says it uses HTTPS port 443 and encrypts traffic with TLS 1.2; the helper must authenticate, while the person sharing their screen does not have to sign in. Microsoft’s Remote Assistance support page also points readers to Quick Assist as an option for remote help.

What to check if Remote Desktop will not connect

  • The host is Windows Home: It cannot accept incoming Remote Desktop connections. Use a supported host edition or choose a different approach for the task.
  • The host is unavailable: Make sure it is powered on, connected to the network, and reachable from the client device.
  • Remote Desktop is off: Check Settings > System > Remote Desktop on the host.
  • The account is denied: Confirm that the account is permitted to connect and that you are using the right credentials.
  • The connection is blocked: Check network reachability and firewall access. If you are connecting from outside the local network, verify the remote-access path you configured.
  • Quick Assist cannot reach the other person: Check internet access on both devices and whether the connection can reach Microsoft’s required endpoints.

Should you pay for another remote desktop app?

Start with the built-in option that matches the job: Remote Desktop for ongoing access to a supported host, or Quick Assist for a help session the other person approves. If your PC runs Home and needs to host connections, or your use case requires capabilities these tools do not provide, then look at alternatives. The free Windows tools are not interchangeable, and a paid app is not automatically necessary just because the first built-in feature you tried does not fit.
