ChatGPT can do more than answer a message in the moment. One less obvious capability is scheduled tasks: if the feature is available on your account, you can ask ChatGPT to act later, repeat an action, or monitor for certain changes. OpenAI’s Scheduled tasks in ChatGPT guide describes what the feature supports and how to check whether it is available.
That is one example, not the only possible surprise. ChatGPT also offers tools and modes such as web search, deep research, image input and generation, file and audio uploads, data analysis, voice, Canvas, memory, Projects, and custom GPTs. The options shown to you depend on your account, settings, and app.
What scheduled tasks do
A scheduled task lets you ask ChatGPT to do something at a future time or on a recurring schedule. OpenAI says tasks can run once or recur, monitor for changes, and respond to supported events when available. Its example is asking ChatGPT to notify you when a package is delivered.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor a simple reminder, you might try: “Remind me next Friday to renew my passport.” For an event-based task, you could ask to be told when a particular tracked event changes, if that event and task type are supported. Treat these as examples rather than guarantees: the available actions depend on the feature’s current support and your account.

How to try a task
- Open ChatGPT in an app or account where scheduled tasks are available.
- Ask in plain language for the action and timing, such as “Remind me next Friday to renew my passport.” For a repeating action, state the recurrence clearly.
- Review ChatGPT’s response to confirm what it scheduled and when. If the task is not created or the response indicates a limitation, the requested action may not be supported.
- Check the Scheduled area in ChatGPT to review or manage tasks, and check your notification settings if you expect an alert.
The exact availability and controls can vary by account, app, and app version. OpenAI’s task documentation is the best place to confirm current details for your setup.
When a Project is the better fit
Scheduled tasks and Projects address different needs. A task is for an action tied to a time, recurrence, or supported event. A Project is a workspace for an ongoing objective: it can keep related chats, files, and instructions together. For example, you might use a Project to organize material for a trip, while a scheduled task handles a reminder to check a detail later.

Projects do not automatically provide context to tasks. OpenAI states that tasks created within Projects cannot access files stored in those Projects, so do not assume a scheduled action can read or use those reference files. Access to Project features can also depend on plan and workspace controls. See OpenAI’s Projects in ChatGPT guide for its current description.
Other ChatGPT capabilities beyond ordinary text chat
Scheduled tasks are only one part of ChatGPT’s broader set of capabilities. Depending on your account and settings, you may see tools for:

- Finding and synthesizing information: web search and deep research.
- Working with media and files: image input and generation, file and audio uploads, and data analysis.
- Changing how you interact: voice and Canvas.
- Keeping work organized or tailored: memory, Projects, and custom GPTs.
These features are not necessarily available to every user in every app or workspace. OpenAI’s ChatGPT capabilities overview describes the range of tools; its ChatGPT FAQ provides broader product context.

If you cannot find scheduled tasks
- No Scheduled area appears: availability may depend on your account, app, or app version. Check the official task guide and make sure you are using a supported, up-to-date app.
- You expect a reminder but receive no alert: inspect ChatGPT’s notification settings and the notification permissions on your device.
- The task does not perform the requested event check: tasks only respond to supported events when available. Rephrase the request only if it fits a supported action; otherwise, do not rely on ChatGPT to monitor that event.
- The task needs information in a Project file: tasks cannot access files stored in Projects, so the task cannot use that material as its context.
