Logseq is a credible open-source alternative to Obsidian, and its Markdown and Org-mode support may appeal if you want notes in formats you can inspect. But open source alone does not establish what an AI feature sends to an outside service—or whether your notes stay on your device. The distinction matters: the trust described in this headline is a personal experience, not a verified security guarantee about every Logseq AI setup.
Why Logseq is a plausible Obsidian alternative
The Logseq project describes its software as an open-source platform for knowledge management and collaboration. An independent comparison characterizes it as a privacy-first outliner, though that comparison is written by the founder of a competing note product and should be read as one perspective, not a neutral ranking. Logseq’s project repository and the 2026 personal knowledge-management comparison establish that Logseq is a reasonable candidate for the open-source alternative in this discussion; they do not establish that it is the only possible candidate or the best choice for every Obsidian user.
The project says Logseq supports Markdown and Org-mode. That is useful portability context: these are text-oriented formats readers can inspect outside a particular note app. It is not a promise that every feature, relationship, or data structure will transfer cleanly to another application. The project README is the relevant place to check its current format information.

Open source can make software’s code available for inspection, but it does not by itself describe the data flow of a specific AI plugin or service. The cited project materials establish Logseq’s open-source positioning and file-format support; they do not establish which AI feature a particular user tried, whether note content was sent to a model provider, or what could be disabled. A privacy-focused description is not a substitute for checking the actual configuration and provider terms.

Before using AI with private notes, identify the plugin or integration, the model or service it calls, and which text it sends. Check whether processing can happen locally, whether the integration offers controls for limiting or disabling access, and whether the service retains or uses submitted content. If you cannot determine those details, treat the AI workflow as unverified rather than assuming that the app’s open-source status settles the question.
How to judge an AI note app against Obsidian
A useful comparison goes beyond the label “AI-native.” The 2026 comparison article proposes practical axes including capture speed, linking, search and retrieval, privacy and data ownership, time to value, and price. Because its author identifies as a founder of a competing product, use those points as a checklist rather than as independent proof that one app wins.

- Capture and organization: How quickly can you get a thought into the system, and does its structure fit the way you work?
- Links and retrieval: Can you find related material through links and search, and does AI retrieve the relevant notes accurately enough for your needs?
- Storage and portability: Where are the notes stored, and what can you export? Support for Markdown or Org-mode is helpful context, not a guarantee of a complete feature-for-feature migration.
- AI data flow: Is AI built in or added through a plugin? Which content leaves your device, which provider receives it, and what controls do you have?
- Setup and upkeep: How much configuration and maintenance are required, and are you comfortable managing backups?
- Cost and dependencies: What does the app or AI service cost, and does your workflow depend on an external provider or account?
These questions help distinguish a tool that feels private from one whose actual behavior you have checked. No comparative test in the cited sources establishes that Logseq is better than Obsidian or cloud-first AI note apps on all of them.

As described by the project repository surfaced October 9, 2026, Logseq’s database version is beta, while its new mobile app and RTC are alpha. The project warns that data loss is possible in the database version and recommends automated or regular SQLite database backups. These labels and warnings can change, so consult the current project repository before choosing a version or relying on a particular workflow.

If you use the database version, make backups a routine rather than an afterthought. Keep a copy separate from the working database, and verify that you can restore it. Do not assume that a format being open or a project being open source removes the need for a recovery plan.

Logseq’s project description and supported formats make it a plausible open-source alternative for someone looking beyond Obsidian. They do not verify an individual’s AI configuration, establish that AI processing stays local, or prove that a particular workflow is secure. Whether it is the first AI note app you trust depends on the specific integration, what it transmits, the controls available, and your own tolerance for setup and backup responsibilities—not simply on the app’s open-source label.
