ChatGPT-6 won this five-prompt everyday-task face-off 3–2. It took the Thanksgiving planner, creative-writing and household-budget rounds, while Claude Haiku 5.5 was better at running-shoe research and a chaotic family schedule. That is a useful snapshot of how the models handled these prompts—not a universal ranking or a statistically powered benchmark.

What the comparison actually tested

Tom’s Guide’s Amanda Caswell gave both models identical prompts covering five common jobs: planning a meal, writing fiction, researching a purchase, organizing a family day and building a budget calculator. Each response was judged on instruction-following and how much work remained for the user.

The test used one author’s judgments. It did not report blinded grading, repeated runs, a formal scoring rubric, measured latency or independent replication. Model behavior, pricing and availability can also change, so the 3–2 result should be read as an editorial result for these specific prompts.

Round-by-round results

Task Winner Why the response was judged stronger
Thanksgiving planning ChatGPT-6 Made most side dishes vegan by default, supplied a budget breakdown and included a backup plan, reducing cooking complexity in the test by a stated 50%.
Middle-grade fantasy opening ChatGPT-6 Started with immediate action and better matched the requested middle-grade tone.
Running-shoe research Claude Haiku 5.5 Connected high arches and 35 weekly miles with neutral, high-cushion choices and explained the reasoning.
Chaotic family schedule Claude Haiku 5.5 Produced more personal, actionable delegation and rescheduling suggestions.
Household budget calculator ChatGPT-6 Built a more polished editable app with reset controls and mobile/offline use.

1. Thanksgiving planning: ChatGPT-6

The prompt specified a 5 p.m. meal for 10 people, including a vegan guest, a nut allergy, picky children, one oven and a $175 ceiling. Claude calculated turkey timing and suggested equipment and allergy ideas. ChatGPT went further by making most sides vegan by default, breaking down the budget and adding a fallback plan. Caswell judged that approach simpler to execute, reporting a 50% reduction in cooking complexity for the scenario.

2. Creative writing: ChatGPT-6

Both models were asked for the opening 250 words of a middle-grade fantasy about a boy, a cave and a kind dragon. Claude supplied atmospheric description and a distinct dragon personality. ChatGPT opened in immediate action and was judged closer to the requested audience and tone, so it won the round on prompt adherence rather than on originality alone.

3. Running-shoe research: Claude Haiku 5.5

The shopping prompt described a decades-long runner with high arches, running 35 miles per week, and requested three pairs under $150. Claude recommended Brooks Glycerin, Hoka Clifton and Saucony Ride, explaining why neutral, high-cushion shoes could fit that profile. ChatGPT included real-world information and follow-up questions but recommended the firmer Brooks Ghost; the reviewer considered that less suitable for this particular scenario. The test did not establish current prices, stock, sizing or clinical suitability.

4. Chaotic family schedule: Claude Haiku 5.5

The schedule combined a 4:25 school-bus arrival, 6:30 soccer, a post-office visit before 6 p.m., dinner by 6:30 and a 4 p.m. work deadline. Claude’s answer delegated tasks and suggested rescheduling in a way the reviewer found more personal and actionable. ChatGPT added buffers and a problem-handling table, but lost on practical prioritization.

5. Household budget calculator: ChatGPT-6

Claude produced a straightforward calculator with sample bills. ChatGPT delivered a more polished, editable app with reset functionality and support for mobile and offline use. That made customization easier and gave ChatGPT the clearest artifact-building win.

What the 3–2 score means for everyday users

Choose ChatGPT-6 when instruction-following and finished outputs matter

In this test, ChatGPT was strongest when the prompt had many constraints that needed to be reflected directly in the result, when the requested voice mattered, or when the user wanted something usable rather than a description of how to build it. Meal planning and the budget calculator illustrate that advantage.

Choose Claude Haiku 5.5 when contextual judgment is the bottleneck

Claude performed better when the task depended on tailoring advice to a person’s circumstances and making trade-offs explicit. Its shoe answer connected the runner’s arch profile and mileage to a shoe category, while its schedule answer focused on delegation and changing commitments instead of merely arranging times.

For research, neither result is a blanket verdict

Claude won the single shopping-research prompt, but the test cannot establish that it is generally better for research. The reviewer’s preference turned on the suitability of one recommendation. For consequential purchases, verify fit, current specifications, price and professional guidance independently.

Haiku 5.5’s platform profile and cost context

Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 for high-volume, latency-sensitive classification, routing, extraction and subagent work. Its published capabilities include adaptive thinking, the fastest comparative latency in its lineup, a 1-million-token context window, a 128,000-token maximum output and a June 2026 knowledge cutoff.

Anthropic lists API pricing from $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Those are API rates, not a claim about consumer-chat pricing, and they can change by date, account and usage tier. The large context window is most relevant to developers handling long documents or many items in one request; it does not by itself guarantee better answers to a short household question.

How to use the result without overgeneralizing

  1. For a one-off plan, story, spreadsheet or small app, state every constraint, the desired format and what “done” means.
  2. For personalized advice, include the facts that drive the decision—such as mileage, budget, deadlines and people available to help.
  3. Ask the model to expose assumptions and identify what needs verification before acting.
  4. Re-run important prompts and compare outputs when the cost of a wrong recommendation is high; this five-prompt comparison did not measure consistency.
  5. For developer workflows, evaluate latency, context requirements, output limits and API cost on your own workload rather than importing a consumer-task score.

Bottom line

On the evidence available here, ChatGPT-6 is the better default for mixed everyday tasks because it won three of five rounds and produced the more usable budget tool. Claude Haiku 5.5 is a compelling alternative when tailored practical judgment, fast high-volume processing or very large context matters. The honest conclusion is task-dependent: ChatGPT won this small face-off, not every possible task.
