The unnamed tool in this headline is most likely Focus, a Windows app from Ripple Studios that automatically records active-app activity so you can review your computer day later. It is not a replacement for all of PowerToys: PowerToys customizes Windows, while Focus is for looking back at which applications were active. Focus’s activity history can help jog your memory, but it does not establish what you intended or reconstruct every task.
What does Focus remember that PowerToys does not?
PowerToys is Microsoft’s free, open-source collection of Windows utilities. It includes tools for launching apps and commands, arranging windows, remapping keys, managing files, and other system tasks. It is not presented as an automatic record of your app activity. Microsoft’s current list of utilities and supported Windows versions is on its PowerToys documentation page.
Ripple Studios describes Focus as a personal activity-history app: it records which applications are active and presents that activity in history, daily summaries, categories, timelines, and trends. That can help answer questions such as “What was I working on this afternoon?” without requiring you to start and stop a timer.

Which tool fits the job?

So switching makes sense if your missing feature is activity recall. If you rely on PowerToys for its other utilities, you can keep using it and add Focus for a different purpose; the two tools do not perform the same job.
Is Focus free, and does it work on Windows 11?
Ripple Studios says Focus is free for personal use and that its core personal experience is intended to remain free. The company also says premium features or future plans may be introduced, so this is not a promise that every future capability will be free. The same product page lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 on x64 as supported platforms. Check the current Focus page for the latest availability details.

For comparison, Microsoft lists PowerToys support for Windows 10 version 2004 or later and Windows 11, on x64 and Arm64 PCs. Consult Microsoft’s compatibility details if your PC uses Arm64 or an older Windows release.
Does Focus upload your activity history?
Ripple Studios says Focus keeps detailed activity history on your device and does not sync it to the company. It also says an account is not required for the core experience and that users can purge history from the app. The company describes external activity categorization as optional and enabled only when chosen. These are vendor statements on the Focus product page, not an independent privacy audit; review the current disclosures and settings before deciding whether the app is right for you.

Focus is best understood as a way to inspect app activity after the fact, not as an automatic timesheet or a record of every action. Ripple Studios describes daily summaries and Trends over recent history, but does not specify a numeric history-retention period on its product page. Do not assume a particular number of days will be available.
If you need to remember the exact task behind a block of browser or editor activity, add your own notes or use a workflow designed to capture tasks explicitly. If you need window-management or launcher utilities, PowerToys remains relevant. The useful choice depends on whether you are trying to change how Windows works or recall which apps were active.
