You may not need a paid privacy bundle for everyday needs. Free options can cover encrypted email, private browsing, email aliases, and messaging—but each does a different job, and “free” is the service price, not a guarantee of privacy or security. Here’s what the providers say their free offerings include, where their limits are, and how to decide whether you need an upgrade.
What free privacy apps actually include
These services address separate tasks rather than combining into one all-purpose privacy suite. Proton Mail is a mailbox; DuckDuckGo offers a browser and a forwarding layer for your existing email; Signal is for messaging. The comparison below reflects provider descriptions, not an independent feature-by-feature security test.
| Service | Task | What the free offering does | Limit or distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Mail | Encrypted email account | Proton’s pricing page lists 500 MB of Mail storage, expandable to 1 GB through onboarding actions; paid plans add capacity and features. | |
| DuckDuckGo browser | Browsing | Free browser with privacy features, including Global Privacy Control; DuckDuckGo also describes App Tracking Protection for Android. | Feature availability depends on platform and settings; confirm current support with DuckDuckGo. |
| DuckDuckGo Email Protection | Email aliasing | Free forwarding that removes multiple types of hidden email trackers and provides private addresses. | It forwards to an existing inbox; it is not a replacement mailbox. |
| Signal | Messaging | Free sharing of text, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files. | The cited homepage describes the offering but does not establish a comparative security assessment. |
Free encrypted email: Proton Mail
Proton says free accounts receive the same encryption level as paid plans. Its pricing page lists 500 MB of Mail storage, which can be increased up to 1 GB by completing the “Get started with Proton” checklist. Since plan details can change, check Proton’s current pricing page before relying on a particular quota.
Proton says its Mail service is ad-free and funded by paid subscriptions. It describes its encryption as zero-access and says its services are open source and independently audited. Those are Proton’s descriptions; they are not a substitute for reviewing audit reports or an independent assessment of the service. Proton’s product page explains its stated model.

Jurisdiction is context, not a guarantee
Proton’s privacy policy identifies Proton AG as the operator and gives its Swiss domicile. That is useful context about the company, but it does not mean data is inaccessible to authorities or settle every legal question for every user. See Proton’s privacy policy.
Free private browsing: DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo describes its browser as free and available for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Its help page lists Global Privacy Control, which sends websites an opt-out preference signal. It also describes App Tracking Protection on Android as a feature that can block third-party trackers in other apps. Check DuckDuckGo’s privacy help page for current platform support and settings, since features can change.

A browser’s privacy protections do not make every online activity anonymous or prevent every form of tracking. DuckDuckGo’s privacy policy says it does not sell personal information and describes sharing anonymous information, such as browser and device types, with hosting and content providers to operate its products. The policy was last updated June 3, 2026; read the full policy for its complete account of data handling.

Free email aliases without switching inboxes
DuckDuckGo Email Protection is a forwarding service, not a new mailbox. DuckDuckGo says it removes multiple kinds of hidden email trackers and lets you create unique private addresses that forward messages to your existing inbox. That can help keep your personal address from being the one you hand to every website, while leaving your normal email account in place.

Free messaging: Signal
Signal says users can share text, voice messages, photos, videos, GIFs, and files for free. Its homepage presents privacy as a default. The cited description establishes what Signal offers, but it is not technical documentation or an independent comparison of messaging security. See Signal’s homepage for its own description.

Choose by the privacy task you need
- Need an encrypted mailbox? Consider Proton Mail if its storage and feature limits suit you.
- Want browser protections? Check DuckDuckGo’s supported browser for your device and enable the features relevant to your needs.
- Want to share your email address less widely? DuckDuckGo Email Protection adds forwarding aliases to your existing inbox.
- Need private messaging? Signal’s free offering covers text and several kinds of media sharing.
These tools can complement one another, but using them does not prove that your overall setup is private. The right choice depends on your devices, the information you need to protect, and the people or organizations you are concerned about. The provider descriptions here do not determine which service is best for a particular threat model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhen paying may make sense
Start with the free tier if it covers the job you have. Paying becomes relevant when you hit a specific boundary: Proton says paid plans add more storage, addresses, custom domains, and unlimited messages. A paid plan may be useful for those needs, but the existence of an upgrade does not mean everyone needs a privacy bundle. Recheck the provider’s current terms and limits before deciding.
