Wi‑Fi 7 is not an automatic upgrade from Wi‑Fi 6. If your current gateway delivers the speed your Internet plan provides, reaches the rooms you use, and serves your phones, laptops and streaming devices without congestion, replacing it may change little. Wi‑Fi 7 becomes compelling when compatible clients, 6 GHz access, multi-gigabit traffic or severe interference expose a measurable limit.

What Wi‑Fi 7 adds beyond Wi‑Fi 6

The Wi‑Fi generation label describes capabilities, not guaranteed performance. Wi‑Fi 7’s principal additions are Multi-Link Operation (MLO), channels up to 320 MHz wide, 4K-QAM modulation and, on supported products, access to the 6 GHz band. A router marketed as Wi‑Fi 7 may not implement all of these features, and a client may support only a subset.

Multi-Link Operation

MLO can coordinate more than one band or link so traffic can use the path with the best capacity or reliability. In a Wireless Broadband Alliance residential Phase 2 trial, a tri-band Wi‑Fi 7 access point and Intel BE200 client in a 4,500-square-foot home doubled aggregated throughput under heavy 6 GHz co-channel interference. Application-layer latency fell by 35–48%, and MAC-layer jitter fell by as much as 40%.

Those results describe a specific access point, client, layout and interference pattern—not a guaranteed household improvement. Cisco notes that many real clients still use one MLO band most of the time to preserve battery life. It also warns that simultaneous 5 GHz and 6 GHz operation can be constrained by interference between the radios.

320 MHz channels and 4K-QAM

A 320 MHz channel can carry twice the raw channel width of a 160 MHz Wi‑Fi 6 channel, but the benefit requires compatible access points and clients, enough clean spectrum and short enough range for the high modulation rates to hold. 4K-QAM increases bits per symbol under strong signal conditions; walls, distance and neighboring networks reduce that advantage quickly.

6 GHz access

The 6 GHz band offers additional spectrum and less legacy congestion, but coverage is shorter than 5 GHz through many walls. “Wi‑Fi 7” on the box does not prove that a particular model includes 6 GHz, 320 MHz channels or a useful MLO mode. Check the exact model specification and firmware documentation.

What real-world tests show

Evidence Result What it means
WBA residential trial, 2026 2× aggregated throughput with heavy 6 GHz interference; 35–48% lower application latency MLO can matter when interference is the bottleneck.
WBA/LG U+ multi-dwelling trial, 2025 Up to 9 Gbps peak; up to 4× Wi‑Fi 6 in that setup; 4.4 Gbps router-to-laptop MLO; congestion latency 88 ms to 20 ms Dense housing and compatible equipment can produce large gains.
RTINGS model comparison ASUS RT-BE96U: 3,490 Mbps highest tested speed; Wi‑Fi 6 ASUS ZenWiFi XT9: 1,140 Mbps Model design matters more than the generation badge.
Tom’s Guide Archer GE650 test, 2025 2.019 Gbps at 15 ft; 552.5 Mbps at 50 ft with 6 GHz inactive; 238.2 Mbps at 75 ft; 4.3 Mbps at 90 ft Distance and band changes can overwhelm headline speeds.

RTINGS tested 25 Wi‑Fi 7 routers and found that 22 used only the minimal form of MLO. Its conclusion is important: certification establishes baseline interoperability, but it does not guarantee a complete MLO implementation or predict real-world behavior.

Even Wi‑Fi 6’s theoretical maximum of 9.6 Gbps is not a typical single-client result. Cisco estimates about 1.5 Gbps as an achievable maximum for a two-spatial-stream client under its stated MAC-efficiency assumption. A faster theoretical PHY rate therefore does not automatically produce a faster download.

  • Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
  • Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.

When keeping Wi‑Fi 6 is the sensible choice

  • Your Internet plan is the ceiling. A 300 Mbps or 1 Gbps service cannot deliver multi-gigabit Internet speed merely because a router supports Wi‑Fi 7.
  • Your clients are mostly Wi‑Fi 5 or Wi‑Fi 6. Older phones, televisions and laptops cannot use Wi‑Fi 7’s MLO, 320 MHz or 4K-QAM features.
  • Coverage is already good. A well-placed gateway or mesh system with stable room-by-room performance may outperform a faster router located poorly.
  • Your workload is ordinary. Web browsing, video calls and one or two 4K streams rarely need the capacity shown in laboratory demonstrations.
  • Your wired network is slower. A gateway with a 1 GbE uplink or LAN port can bottleneck a wireless link that is capable of more.

When Wi‑Fi 7 can justify the upgrade

  • You have several Wi‑Fi 7-capable phones, laptops or adapters and can verify that they support the desired MLO bands.
  • Your ISP plan is multi-gigabit and the gateway, WAN port, switch and client all support the required wired rates.
  • You live in a dense apartment or multi-dwelling building where neighboring networks create sustained interference.
  • Several people transfer large files, back up to a local server, stream high-bitrate video or play latency-sensitive games at the same time.
  • You need a clean 6 GHz link for nearby rooms and can place the access point close enough to overcome 6 GHz wall attenuation.

How to decide using your own measurements

  1. Inventory clients. Record each important phone, laptop, television and adapter’s Wi‑Fi generation, maximum channel width and 6 GHz support. A Wi‑Fi 7 gateway cannot upgrade a Wi‑Fi 6 client.
  2. Record the wired limit. Note your Internet tier, gateway WAN speed and every LAN or switch link. Test a wired computer first; its sustained result is the practical Internet ceiling.
  3. Map current performance. Run the same speed test in the gateway’s room, at medium range and in the weakest room. Repeat during the busy period and note latency, not just download speed.
  4. Inspect interference. Look for crowded 2.4 and 5 GHz channels, neighboring 6 GHz networks, thick walls and appliances that force clients to roam or fall back to narrower channels.
  5. Compare like with like. For a replacement, verify 6 GHz availability, 320 MHz support, the exact MLO mode and certification, WAN/LAN speeds, firmware support and the number of radios. Re-test at the same locations and times.

Common upgrade mistakes

Buying on the maximum-rate label

Manufacturers may advertise laboratory figures as high as 46 Gbps, four-times-lower latency or five-times-greater capacity while warning that actual throughput and coverage vary with traffic, building materials, obstacles, client limitations and location. Treat those numbers as PHY or test conditions, not household guarantees.

Assuming 6 GHz reaches like 5 GHz

6 GHz can be excellent in the same room or through light partitions, yet its signal can drop sharply across floors and dense walls. A product that is fastest at 15 feet may be unusable at 90 feet; the Archer GE650 test fell from 2.019 Gbps at 15 feet to 4.3 Mbps at 90 feet.

Ignoring the client and firmware

MLO behavior depends on both ends of the connection and on firmware. Confirm client driver support, update the access point and adapter, and check whether the advertised MLO mode is simultaneous multi-band operation or a less capable link-selection implementation.

The practical verdict

Keep the Wi‑Fi 6 gateway when measured performance meets your plan and household workload. Upgrade to Wi‑Fi 7 when a specific problem—interference, crowded housing, multi-gig traffic, insufficient 6 GHz capacity or a growing set of compatible clients—can be tied to the features you are buying. Compare measured short-, medium- and long-range throughput rather than the badge, and verify every claimed feature on the exact model before spending money.
