Yes: a home server can keep answering Wikipedia requests during an internet outage. Download a Wikipedia ZIM archive from Kiwix while you are online, store it on a local computer or Raspberry Pi, and run Kiwix Server. Phones, laptops and other devices on the same home network then open the archive in an ordinary browser; their requests never need to reach Wikipedia or the wider internet.
What makes offline Wikipedia work
Kiwix is the software layer that turns compressed OpenZIM archives into a local website. The archive is a file stored on your server, while kiwix-serve provides the HTTP service that browsers can use. Kiwix describes the arrangement as one central computer storing ZIM files and serving them to everyone on the local network.
This is different from installing a separate copy on every device. Once the archive and server are working, a phone connected to your home Wi-Fi can browse Wikipedia even if the router has no working internet connection. The local network itself must still be operating.
Choose the right Wikipedia archive
The current official Kiwix index lists several English editions. Their sizes are dated snapshots, not permanent specifications, so a later release may be larger or smaller.

| Edition | Current listing | What it contains | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| All-maxi | 119G, wikipedia_en_all_maxi_2026-08.zim |
Broadest listed edition, including images | A dedicated server with ample storage |
| All-mini | 13G, wikipedia_en_all_mini_2026-09.zim |
Much smaller edition | Limited storage or a portable setup |
| All-nopic | 49G, wikipedia_en_all_nopic_2026-06.zim |
Text-focused edition without pictures | Readers who value coverage over images |
Compare editions by coverage, images, storage capacity and the time required to download or replace them. The 119G maxi file alone does not represent the whole disk requirement: leave room for the operating system, temporary download data and at least one replacement archive during an update.
Build a Raspberry Pi server
Hardware that fits the maxi archive
Raspberry Pi is supported by Kiwix, and kiwix-serve is lightweight enough for Raspberry Pi Zero-class systems and many NAS appliances. For the current 119G English maxi archive, a Raspberry Pi 5 paired with a 256 GB or larger USB SSD is the practical choice. Raspberry Pi systems can boot from microSD and can also use USB, network or PCIe-connected storage. A high-endurance 256 GB-or-larger microSD card is suitable for the operating system or a smaller ZIM, but do not expect a low-capacity card to hold the maxi archive with useful headroom.

Install and expose the archive
- While online, download the desired English ZIM from Kiwix’s official library or download index. Create a dedicated directory such as
/datafor ZIM files, as Kiwix’s documentation recommends. - Mount the SSD or other storage and copy the ZIM into that directory. Confirm the file is complete and that free space exceeds the archive size plus temporary and future-update space.
- Install Kiwix Server or the
kiwix-toolspackage for your operating system. - Start the server with Kiwix’s example command:
kiwix-serve -p 80 /data/*.zim. Port 80 is the standard unencrypted HTTP port in this example; adjust the path and service configuration to match your system. - Find the Pi’s LAN address from your router or operating system, then open
http://server-address/on a phone or computer connected to the same network.
Give the server a stable DHCP reservation or a local hostname so household users do not have to discover a new address after every reboot. Test from two devices before relying on it during an outage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse a prebuilt Kiwix Hotspot
Kiwix describes Hotspot as an optimized, plug-and-play device built on Raspberry Pi 5 that provides offline access to Wikipedia and other resources. It reduces operating-system and service configuration, but a DIY server gives you more control over hardware, storage and which ZIM archives are installed. Whichever route you choose, verify that the selected device has enough capacity for the specific archive edition.

Enhanced Connectivity: Includes dual 4K micro HDMI ports, USB-C power input, and high-speed USB 3.0 ports. PCIe Expansion Support: FPC connector enables M.2 NVMe SSDs when using compatible adapters. Fast Storage Options: Works with microSD cards for booting, or optional NVMe storage for advanced projects. Built for Projects & Learning: Ideal for programming, home labs, DIY electronics, automation, and Linux-based development.
What happens when the internet fails
With the ZIM already stored locally, the browser requests pages from Kiwix Server over your LAN. No DNS lookup to Wikipedia, external route or cloud account is required for article delivery. Your Wi-Fi access point, switch and server must remain powered, and the client must stay connected to that private network. Internet-dependent features, live links, current events and any content not included in the dated archive will not update during the outage.
Security and network boundaries
Kiwix Server is a local HTTP service. Kiwix’s FAQ notes that kiwix-serve speaks HTTP/1.1 without SSL and recommends a reverse proxy for serious deployments. For a home-only installation, bind access to the private LAN and avoid port-forwarding the service to the public internet. Internet exposure turns a simple offline library into a separate security project requiring authentication, TLS, firewall rules, logging and ongoing updates.

- Do not forward port 80 from your router unless you have deliberately designed and secured a public service.
- Keep the server’s operating system and Kiwix packages updated when the machine is online.
- Use a firewall rule that permits the LAN subnet and blocks untrusted interfaces.
- Back up irreplaceable personal data separately; a ZIM archive is replaceable, but a failed disk can still take the service offline.
Keeping the archive current
Wikipedia ZIM files are dated releases. The index includes filenames with year and month stamps, so freshness is a maintenance decision rather than an automatic property of Kiwix Server. When a newer release appears, reconnect the server (or use another download computer), check available disk space, download the new ZIM, verify that the transfer completed, and then add or replace the old file.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Record which edition and date you currently serve.
- Download the newer dated file while online.
- Keep the old archive until the new file has been checked and opened successfully.
- Start or reload Kiwix Server with the new file, then remove the old copy only after confirming clients can browse it.
The official pages do not promise a universal automatic update schedule, so check the Kiwix index periodically if current coverage matters.

Troubleshooting the common failures
The page does not open
Confirm the server process is running, the client is on the same LAN, and you are using the server’s local address rather than a public website address. Check that the firewall allows the chosen port.
The archive is listed but articles fail
Check file ownership and read permissions, confirm the path in the command matches the mounted drive, and make sure the download was not interrupted. A nearly full disk can also prevent indexing or temporary operations.
It works on the Pi but not on a phone
Guest Wi-Fi and client-isolation settings can block device-to-device traffic. Connect the phone to the main private network or change the access-point policy, then retry the local address.
The server becomes slow
Serving a large archive from a slow or failing card can create delays. Move the ZIM to SSD storage, check disk health and temperature, and avoid running multiple heavyweight services on a small board.
Bottom line for a home setup
A Raspberry Pi 5, a 256 GB-or-larger USB SSD and Kiwix Server are enough for the current 119G English maxi archive, provided you reserve additional space for the operating system and updates. Choose the 13G mini or 49G nopic edition when storage or download time matters more than images. Once the archive is downloaded and served locally, any browser on the same functioning home network can continue reading that snapshot of Wikipedia without an internet connection.
