Short answer: Nintendo Switch 2 is the better way to play these remakes away from a television, while PlayStation 5 Pro delivers the strongest image quality and performance headroom on a large screen. Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 are convincing Switch 2 conversions with 60fps targets in handheld and docked modes. Resident Evil 4 is the stress test: playable and portable, but with more visible compromises than the PS5 Pro version.

How the three Switch 2 versions compare at a glance

Game Switch 2 findings Best reason to choose it PS5 Pro advantage
Resident Evil 2 Targets 60fps in handheld and docked play. TechRadar reported delightfully consistent performance, including higher-action sections. The safest all-round Switch 2 purchase: atmospheric, deliberate survival horror that remains smooth away from a TV. More image-quality and performance headroom for players prioritizing a premium television presentation.
Resident Evil 3 Targets 60fps in both modes, with barely noticeable drops in action-heavy scenes. HDR calibration helps the graphics translate well. A shorter, more action-forward campaign and a good portable option when priced below the other two. A cleaner, more premium presentation; the Switch 2 port is the least persuasive reason to choose the platform for visuals alone.
Resident Evil 4 The most demanding conversion. It aims for 60fps, but Digital Foundry’s October 2026 analysis, summarized by Nintendo Life, said the game would benefit from a locked 40fps mode. Portable access to the most ambitious remake, provided you accept compromises in consistency or visual settings. Official PS5 Pro enhancement, higher framerate, ultra-high-resolution technology and substantially more headroom.

The Switch 2 editions of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 launched on October 16, 2026. The available reports establish performance targets and qualitative differences, but not exact internal resolutions for every game and platform, so resolution figures should not be used to rank them.

Resident Evil 2 Remake: the best all-round Switch 2 version

Resident Evil 2 is the easiest recommendation on Nintendo’s hardware. TechRadar’s review reported a 60fps target with consistent frame rates in both handheld and docked play, including sections with heavier action. That matters because the remake’s tension depends on controlled pacing, careful exploration and sudden bursts of danger; unstable performance would undermine all three.

Its practical advantage is flexibility. You can play a measured police-station exploration sequence on a television, then continue in handheld mode without giving up the smoothness reported in the review. Players seeking the highest possible image quality should still choose PS5 Pro or PC, but Switch 2 does not feel like a token version of the game.

#1 Best Overall
Resident Evil 4 - PS5
  • Reawaken a Classic – Resident Evil 4 preserves the essence of the original game, now reconstructed using Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine to deliver realistic visuals and additional narrative depth to the iconic story that was not possible at the time of the original release.
  • Modernized Gameplay – The team from 2019’s Resident Evil 2 returns to build upon the series’ modern approach to survival horror. Engage in frenzied combat with the Ganados villagers, explore a European village gripped by madness, and solve puzzles to access new areas and collect useful items for Leon and Ashley’s constant struggle to survive.
  • Overwhelming Hordes – Face hordes of rabid enemies that threaten to overwhelm Leon with even more diverse methods of attack than in the original release.
  • Survive on a Knife’s Edge – Years of intense training have taught Leon new ways to use his knife, helping to even the odds against the unrelenting onslaught of enemies. By parrying enemy attacks, you can avoid debilitating damage and evade lunging enemies seeking to grab Leon and hold him in place. Make smart use of scavenged knives to deliver precise finishing moves on vulnerable enemies, and even use the element of surprise to quietly dispatch unsuspecting foes before they break.

Who should buy it

  • Players buying one remake first and wanting the safest technical conversion.
  • Handheld-focused owners who value atmosphere and stable pacing over maximum visual effects.
  • Anyone deciding between the three games on Switch 2 without a specific preference for action or portability.

Resident Evil 3 Remake: smooth, portable and more divisive

The Switch 2 edition of Resident Evil 3 also targets 60fps. TechRadar found smooth docked and handheld play, with drops that were barely noticeable even during action-heavy scenes. The same review said the graphics translate well after HDR calibration, so a correctly configured display is worthwhile.

The bigger question is the game itself rather than the conversion. Creative Bloq describes the remake as good while noting that it takes liberties, and Nintendo Life’s review summary rates it 6/10, compared with 9/10 for both Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 4. Those are editorial assessments, not frame-rate measurements, but they explain why RE3 is usually the least compelling purchase when visual quality is your only deciding factor.

Resident Evil 2 - PlayStation 5
  • TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
  • RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
  • NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.

When RE3 makes sense

  • You want a shorter, faster campaign with more emphasis on action.
  • You find it substantially cheaper than the other remakes.
  • Portable play is important and you already know you prefer its interpretation of the original story.

Resident Evil 4 Remake: the Switch 2 stress test

Resident Evil 4 asks more of the hardware than the earlier remakes. Creative Bloq calls it a fantastic update, and Nintendo Life’s summary of Digital Foundry’s October 2026 testing identifies the central trade-off on Switch 2: the game targets 60fps, yet a locked 40fps option would likely provide a more consistent experience. The same summary places the Switch 2 version closer to the PS4 generation than the PS5 in technical ambition.

That does not make the port unplayable. It makes the choice clearer. Buy it on Switch 2 if playing in bed, on a commute or anywhere away from a television is the feature you value most. Buy it on PS5 Pro if you want the cleanest television presentation and the most reserve for demanding scenes.

Switch 2 versus PS5 Pro: what changes beyond frame rate?

Decision factor Nintendo Switch 2 PlayStation 5 Pro
Portability Full handheld and docked play. Reviews report smooth 60fps-target performance for RE2 and RE3 in both modes. Television-focused console with no handheld mode.
Image-quality ceiling Strong conversions, with RE4 showing the clearest compromises. Sony documents an upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). RE4 is officially listed as PS5 Pro enhanced.
Performance headroom RE2 and RE3 are reported as stable; RE4 is the exception and is discussed as a candidate for a locked 40fps mode. Capcom says RE4 runs at a higher framerate on PS5 Pro.
Controller and audio features The cited Switch 2 coverage emphasizes portability rather than platform-specific haptics or audio features. Sony’s developer interview lists 3D audio, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and faster asset streaming for the PS5 version of RE4.
Best fit Commuters, handheld players and Nintendo-focused households. Players with a large 4K/120Hz display who prioritize clarity, ray tracing and performance headroom.

Which version should you buy?

Choose Switch 2 when portability is the deciding feature

Switch 2 is not one uniform technical win across the trilogy. It is a platform advantage. RE2 and RE3 preserve smooth play in both modes according to the cited reviews, making them unusually good fits for a hybrid console. RE4 remains attractive for the same reason, but you should expect more compromises.

Choose PS5 Pro for the best television experience

Sony lists Resident Evil 4 among PS5 Pro-enhanced games. Capcom says the PS5 Pro version runs at a higher framerate and uses ultra-high-resolution technology for more detailed environments and more natural visual effects. Sony also describes the console’s upgraded GPU, advanced ray tracing and PSSR. Those official enhancements make PS5 Pro the clear choice when visual fidelity and performance reserve matter more than handheld play.

Pick your first remake

  1. Start with Resident Evil 2 for the strongest balance of atmosphere, pacing and Switch 2 performance.
  2. Choose Resident Evil 4 for the most action and the best showcase of what the series can do, preferably on PS5 Pro if you play on a television.
  3. Choose Resident Evil 3 for a shorter, more action-focused campaign or a compelling discount; its technical conversion is smooth, but its remake is more divisive.

The verdict

For Switch 2 owners, Resident Evil 2 is the safest first purchase and Resident Evil 3 is a solid portable option with fewer reasons to upgrade for graphics alone. Resident Evil 4 is the decisive platform test: Switch 2 delivers the freedom to play anywhere, while PS5 Pro delivers the most convincing image quality, higher-framerate support and extra visual headroom. Your display and play location should decide the purchase more than the game’s basic availability on either system.
